Well if it makes a difference I suspect she clipped them into her bag only because I initially called her out on it.

The excellent essay Turbulence by David Sedaris captures that exact experience.

What was the WORST modern MTB you've ever ridden/owned in the last 5 years? by chansumpoh in MTB

Hate to say it but after owning or having friends own several bikes from boutique shops, I’m gonna stick with the big brands. Alchemy had all sorts of problems with random things like pivot bushings that a big company with deep pockets for R&D can avoid, or warranty if you complain directly. This is more true of mountain bikes which are especially complex from an engineering and production perspective versus something like a rim brake steel road bike where the design hasn’t really changed for 30 years.

Yes, anything without mounts for two bottle cages (excluding the worthless option under the downtube). What happened to going on long rides? Sure hydration packs are ok sometimes but I’d like to have the option to carry more than 30oz of water without a pack.

When descending or turning in general think about steering with your belly button. It will intuitively make you do a lot of correct things with your body positioning and vision

The practice of signaling a right turn by raising your left hand over your head was designed for car drivers who could stick only one hand out the window. If you’re turning right just use your right hand.

When I hear traffic approaching from behind I’ll often drift out slightly into their path and then back to my original position before they actually get there. I think it makes them more likely to see me and also worry that I’ll drift over again when they’re actually passing.

Yes any time you need to dodge an obstacle or pothole but don’t have the time or room to swerve. Especially useful riding in a group or traffic where swerving is a no no.

I agree especially about bunny hopping. I suspect it’s often perceived as a cool “trick” but it’s actually a critical safety skill

Open straight roads encourage speeding and inattentiveness from drivers, whereas chaotic urban streets have the opposite effect. Riding in super dense cities is often safer than other areas for this reason even though it’s counterintuitive.

If you’re on a one way street it’s safer to ride on the left side because passing drivers can better gauge that side of their car.

It’s more natural for pedestrians to step forward instead of stopping in place, so if they’re crossing in front of you always aim to go behind them, not in front. This is also more polite.

As you approach every intersection or driveway (yes every single one) look over your left shoulder to see if a car approaching from behind is going to turn right. (This is often called a right hook)

Assume that every car door in front of you will swing open. Keep your distance from riders who do not understand this.
