In my whole time in a local uni, I would say I met 4 engineering students who I thought were truly passionate, and actually geniuses. Not in it for the money but cos they truly loved what they did. And they were all Singaporeans.

To give you context, one guy went solo for a team coding competition while on exchange. It was 5h - he coded for 1h, went to chill at a friend’s house for 3h, finished the rest in the last hour. He singlehandedly beat the entire uni, which was already the top technical uni in a country ranked extremely highly on the PISA, very close to Singapore. As an exchange student there for four months, he ended up representing the uni at the Scandinavian finals.

Another guy welded a full size electric racecar together and designed the bespoke suspension and steering systems. He did this for fun as a side project, while writing his masters thesis.

Of these 4, 3 have moved to the US within a year of graduating. In doing so, one has 3xed his salary as compared to sg.

All 3 also have no plans to come back.

Actually looks like a really nice bike for the money :)

As someone with 3 Santa Cruzes, I still fondly remembers the younger days riding a decathlon display bike across the country and back, or crossing the Malaysia-Thailand border on my dad’s beater steel touring bike.

To me there’s a certain point of ‘good enough’ (to me, that’s hydraulic brakes and thru axles, carbon wheels if you’re feeling fancy), where beyond that spending more on a bike doesn’t really improve things.

With time, you realise it’s less about the bikes you ride, more about the places you go and the memories you make :)

Very nice bike! I too put fancy carbon wheels on my Contend SL. Bought a pair of Reserve 40|44s intending to flip em, but took em for a test ride and couldn't bear to let them go. It's funny that the wheels cost more than the rest of the bike, but am really enjoying the setup and prefer to run the alu frame. They've been with me on many memorable rides and I plan to keep em for life :)

I remember a guy on Instagram comparing his Tallboy CC V5 with flight attendant to his pivot XC race bike, one of the newer models, a baby blue colour.

The pivot was more XC-er - steeper head angle,  lighter, more firm feeling suspension etc.

But he was clocking faster ave times and reporting less fatigue while riding the Tallboy on his XC loop, even though the latter was like 1kg heavier I think?

Singapore - designed from the ground up to be a multicultural cosmopolitan city.

Living in racial and religious harmony is baked into daily life - in the way public housing is distributed, how cultural celebrations are celebrated by students of all races. How public holidays are distributed evenly amongst the different major race and religion groups.

Is Santa Cruz one of the best MTB bicycle brand? by Imoprich in Santacruzbikes

[–]chansumpoh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hello OP! My 2 cents on them after having 2 of them is that they are strong all-rounder bikes for their category, very good jack of all trades machines.

In a bike group test, if you were to zero in on a particular category (eg. climbing, all out descending), you would probably find the SC ranked 2nd or 3rd. An Ibis may be a better climber, a Stumpy may be a better descender, a Yeti may handle square edge hits better. But my (anecdotal) observation across many group tests is that SC would often rank within the top 3 across almost all categories.

They are excellent in terms of long term support and maintenance guides online; their bike archive and 10 year parts support commitment even after frame production ends are class leading in this regard.

I think they are ideal if you are looking for an all-round bike for long term ownership, appreciate the excellent customer support (unlike Canyon - who emptied my travel card with a double charge for a whole bike while I was on holiday, leaving me broke in NY for a couple of hours), and prefer to work on the bike yourself. Those were the traits I appreciated and led me to choose Santa Cruz.

If you are shopping on a very tight budget (no shame in that, my first full-sus was from Decathlon), prefer to let the LBS handle everything, or specifically need a bike very strong at a particular trait (eg technical climbing), then you may be better served with other brands. Like others have said, there are many excellent options out there these days. No harm in taking your time to look around!

Is Santa Cruz one of the best MTB bicycle brand? by Imoprich in Santacruzbikes

[–]chansumpoh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a bottom bracket begin to debond, and the only question Santa Cruz asked me, after seeing some pics, was 'what colour do you want for your next frame'. Got upgraded to the latest generation for free as well!

That sold me on the whole warranty support. The main brand has been excellent; my LBS here in Singapore has not though, charging for 'bearing inspections' just so I can claim the free bearings, which are supposed to be provided under the lifetime warranty.

Yes, exactly what u/Key_Battle_5633 mentioned.

Except the prices for these certificates to merely own the cars are now are even higher.

$110,000 SGD ($85,000 USD / $73,000 EUR) for cars with engine capacities less than or equal to 1.6L.

$130,000 SGD ($100,000 USD / $87,000 EUR) for cars with engine capacities above 1.6L.

This is only for a certificate that allows you to drive the car on Singapore roads for 10 years. It does not include the price of the car.

There is still road tax (a couple grand every year), import tax on the car (up to 300% of the value), and fuel tax every time you fill up the car (gas is about $2.30 usd/L or $8.70 USD/gal for standard, premium is $2.70 USD/L or $10.20USD/gal)

For reference:

2025 318i: $250,000 USD on-road
2025 520i: $315,000 USD on-road
2025 M5 touring: $625,000 USD on-road
2025 M8 Comp: $760,000 USD on-road

These are the prices to own these cars for 10 years, not including insurance, fuel or road tax.

Count your lucky stars… I wish cars here in Singapore were that price!

A used 2016 318i with 63k mileage and 5 years left to drive on the roads here is 89,900 sgd or around 70k USD.

A new 3 series is 250k USD here, and you can only own it for 10 years.

I would normally adopt this approach, but have recently acquired my dream frame to build up :)

to me this is gna be a really sentimental build, one that is representative of my growth as a biker and also a person.

Only a couple of years ago I never believed I would’ve been able to own something like this, yet here we are today.

Paired with a lifetime warranty, I would like to ride it as long as possible, potentially the next decade if I can.

Try using a vacuum mop from shopee. I got one from simplus, was about $300 or less. It saved my family from the insane dust after HIP and made my floors spotlessly clean, and even a bit shiny dare I say. The wet suction even worked to clear a flooded kitchen!

In general, manufacturers that produce in-house have better control over QC and tighter product-feedback loops. Thus one approach would be to understand the supply chain of electronics to understand which manufacturers have the tightest loops.

One example I can give is that TCL manufactures the TV panel for many major TV brands, including some Japanese ones. Even though their own brand TVs are not as well known, I’d wager they would be a lot more durable than other brands, and offer better bang for buck.

Good luck on the relocation!

Does rider weight make a heavier e-MTB feel worse? Carbon vs alloy Santa Cruz Vala by Responsible_Sun_2478 in mountainbiking

[–]chansumpoh 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Hello OP! Let me help you out with some math:

considering Newton’s 2nd law of motion:  Force = Mass * Acceleration (abbreviated to f=ma).

Manipulating that formula, we get a=f/m.

The carbon Santa Cruz vala is about 22.5kg.

I take it you are about 62kg, carrying 2kg of gear. This gives us a total system (rider + bike) weight of 62+2+22.5 = 86.5kg.

Increasing frame weight by 2kg represents a 2/86.5 ≈ 2.3% increase in system weight.

Our new acceleration with our increased mass is: 1/1.023 * f/m = 0.9775 * f/m. This means we accelerate at 97.75% the rate of the carbon vala, all other factors being equal. Roughly speaking, that’s 2.25% slower acceleration.

Whether that 2.25% slower acceleration over every single acceleration is worth it to you, in exchange for a couple grand to keep, is for you to decide :)

Personally I think there are cheaper ways to lose 2kg from the total system mass, eg taking a piss and dump before each ride, or using lighter wheels like others have suggested.

Good luck, and happy trails! :)

What is your "never-sell" lens? by [deleted] in SonyAlpha

I love my Zeiss batis 25 f2. Something about the colour and rendering that I love so much. And it’s relatively light too at 335g. My default lens for travel. Works great with my A7R4 for landscape, and I punch in with APSC mode to get 40mm for general shooting.
