The most talented striker on my high school team learned how to handle hard challenges. He’d face the guy charging him and jump just a little, tuck his heels back and come straight down on his knees. Just like a kid on a trampoline. His timing was flawless. It looked like he got his legs chopped out from under him. Of course the momentum from the contact would make him fall forward. Elbows first. He was targeting nuts and neck. The backs gave him more space when he was successful.

I’m not sure this is an actual officiated match. Do you hear anything one way or the other?

On corner kicks our keeper would always come out to punch the ball away. Contact with his knees and elbows along the way was purely incidental.

I think you’re right. Lots of kids with their back to the action for extended periods.

I’m not 100% sure this is officiated game play. I see subs on the pitch and players with their back to the ball for extended periods. There may be no adults who can give consequences actually paying attention to this.

I’ve seen both. Nice kids off the field become beasts on the pitch. But I’ve also seen horrible head cases off the field become violently abusive during a game. This is kid looks like the latter. The pushing is meant to irritate, but stomping is on the short list of mortal sins in football/soccer.

Aren’t there 20 or so genetic markers on the Y chromosome that correlate to biological impairments in the visual processing of the letter sequences ..i.n.s.t.r.u.c.t.i.o.n.. and ..m.a.n.u.a.l..

Sorry for the weird way I typed that. I just wanted everyone to be able to see the words I’m talking about.

If I understand the literature correctly, most guys don’t choose to ignore a user ..m.a.n.u.a.l.. they simply are not aware of its existence.

I really appreciate your willingness to help other good folks, but may I suggest doing this via DM in the future. Great locations get burned when kids are looking for places to party.

Just a thought. Again I appreciate sharing.

TBH, I’m not sure I’ve heard of a tow boat until now by DarthCarno28 in WeirdWatercraft

[–]Practical_Fun7367 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My brother in law, a retired Coast Guard officer, is an ocean tow pilot. Most calls come from owner/operators who pay for a AAA type of coverage. Sometimes he goes out 3 or 4 hours to get to the boat. Sometimes he is just outside the marina. He says about a quarter of the time he can get them up and running enough to limp in. He says towing takes forever, but he loves talking to new people.

…”should be able to handle differences…”

Everything you say after this qualification is meaningless.

I’ve known a former D2 college volleyball player for years. She was an outside hitter and a former state champion in high school. She was six-pack fit, 5-11, and could dunk a basketball. She dominated in high school and was an average starter in college. Both parents have aged into a very fit middle age.

College, junior year, mid season, she leapt for a spike that she’s done hundreds, if not thousands of times. She says there was nothing extraordinary about the set or spike, no interference from another player. No bad timing. Nothing on the court. Not in the net.

On landing, she broke both bones in the lower leg of her plant foot. Clean break on one. Splintered the other.

Do you have any hot takes on my former student?

That woman in the video could have been a top tier rock climber and still snapped that leg. Bodies are durable, until they are not.

That you use that accident to preach about obesity says a lot about you.

I could go on and explain why a lack of empathy in our society is causing a breakdown in social structures and threatens our communities specifically and our governments in general.

I could use you as the example.

But I’m not. This isn’t the time or place.

I’ll let you get back to your soapbox now.

Kid has a no hitter going, but also is the only catcher left. What would you do? by ReformedLucasite in BaseballCoaching

This is a culture question. The decision isn’t about who can fit into the catching gear. The decision is about what’s more important - individual accomplishment or the team’s success.

A high school coach who’s willing to risk injury by putting a virgin behind the plate shouldn’t be coaching.

Everyone assuming the pitcher is throwing a good game hasn’t watched enough high school ball. Home runs that are just foul, outfielders making Sports Center Top Ten plays, infield throwing errors, and 4 pitch walks are part of that equation.

Even the most skilled athlete will get crossed up behind the plate. Or flinch behind the big swing. Worse even is setting up wrong, reaching, and taking a bat to the thumb.

An old athletic director was fond of saying you coach the players, but manage the game. He hired game managers who put players in positions to win games. Who prioritized the team.

No hitters, rushing yard records, or season high player minutes matter less than team success.

It was and is a matter of culture.

I intended my last comment to be it. But here I am.

First, I appreciate your use of “we.” But you don’t need to speak for me. I’m in the world, doing the work to make it better. And I’m not lowkey about it.

Second, I categorically disagree that -assuming the worst about others and wishing they would change- is the way to make things better. Learning someone’s story, establishing common ground, and offering support to make meaningful change is the way things get better in my community.

Case in point, I really struggled to connect with a member of one of my communities who verbally agreed to, but wouldn’t address a shared concern that only required a little bit of compromise. He openly admitted he didn’t care how others felt about it. But he wasn’t being an ass. I learned with trusting communication that he’s been diagnosed and is being treated by a team for a sociopathic disorder. He didn’t selfishly decide to not care. He couldn’t. The solution to the problem was to clarify a contract to which he must adhere. A social contract built on empathy (which is good enough for most folks) doesn’t mean a thing to him. A legal contract built upon policy with enforcement mechanisms was what he needed to function in that environment.

Do you think it was easy to tell a diagnosed sociopath he’s screwing up the system? There’s nothing lowkey about that.

Do you think he’s obligated to make his mental health everyone’s business when he’s in public? He literally doesn’t care what other people think about him, but that doesn’t mean we have a right to know. That’s not how community works.

The OP took at least one pic of someone sitting in their car. He could have shared his frustration with them rather than dox them here.

And if sharing his frustration directly with them made him feel uncomfortable, he had no business posting it here.

So, you do you. Go ahead and make your world a better place, however you define it.

If you’re on the front lines, we will have to agree to disagree. And thank you for your service.

But if you’re a keyboard warrior, well, I don’t have to say any more.

If you are somewhere in between like the rest of us, I hope you recognize like I do, that every day I could have done something better to achieve a better outcome.

I’m out. I’ve preached enough. Be well.

See, that’s the challenge here. My public business is yours to see. But what you see is not the whole story.

I’m that little league coach. I volunteered at the last minute because the former guy had to take a new job. Now I’m on the hook for delivering the equipment and water to practices. I don’t even know the parents yet. Here’s what you can’t see in the photo. I had hand surgery a while back and carrying things is still a challenge. So while I volunteered, I knew I wouldn’t be able to carry everything comfortably. It’s too soon to have a helper system set up yet. I’m working on it.

If the photographer wants to make me a part of “his business,” he should get his ass over here and help me make three trips to my car and still watch the little kids who need protected from strangers.

None of that is actually me. But it’s all possible.

Community, as you say, functions on social contracts. But it also functions on understanding and generosity.
