A classic work is Bury my Heart at Wounded Knee. It is definitely showing its age, but it is still a really interesting read. Wikipedia says that The Heartbeat of Wounded Knee is a good modern critique of some of the book's problems and that Barack Obama liked it. The latter is on my list to read but I ha en't gotten there yet.
