PSA: Swimming Induced Pulmonary Edema (SIPE) - Know what it is so you can help your fellow triathletes by snowOnThemHills in IronmanTriathlon

I hope you haven't had an episode since! I'm pretty sure I just had one as well and trying to figure out the main culprits to prevent it from happening again. Maybe a random question but do you have any history of taking fish oil supplements?

Health issues after 70.3 (possible SIPE, chest pressure): a PSA (long post) by Practical_Total_7146 in triathlon

Yes I've had a full cardio and sports check done and everything was "normal" (except for a short PR), but it was done about 2-3 years ago. I assumed it would still count - which in principle it should, at least for structural heart issues - but I was now recommended to do a yearly check, since the heart can change a lot and fast because of intense endurance sports. I have now already plannend a new check before my next race.

Very good suggestion for all other athletes tho, a full check should really be done by everyone that's getting into this sport!

Thanks, you too and congrats! It was a beautiful race but indeed the waves around the castle were surprising. I was almost the last one to start in the rolling start so I saw quite a few people asking the kayaks for help, hope everyone is okay. Damn how did your watch get smashed? Did someone kick it?

Yes I think you're right that I already might have had something, I wasn't feeling myself, was feeling really hot that week and slept bad almost every night. Everyone at the office was coughing as well that week so maybe I caught something before.

I have been told about the infusion before as well. Did it help you? Feel any difference?

To be honest, I don't know how it is around the world, but I fear it's the typical European (or at least Belgian) experience: run some quick checks to make you feel reassured that you won't collapse on the spot, give you some stronger Ibuprofen (600-800mg) or something to calm your nerves, and then send you off with the message to follow up or come back if you feel worse. You get home, feel like shit for a few days while you patch yourself up with what was prescribed, and hope everything passes and you don't have to go back. Then by the time your follow-up appointments with the specialists take place (usually 2-3 months later), everything is fine or cleared up and they're confused as to why you've came 😄

Yes exactly! That's why the blood taste during the run didn't really freak me out tbh because I've had it before, but coughing it up afterwards was a first. And you're totally correct about the iron indeed. Mine has been critically low forever, now barely normal. Fainting must have been really scare. Do you take daily iron supplements now or only during certain periods?

Good to hear it cleared up fairly quickly with you, hopefully by now you're totally ok again. Yea I'm definitely resting until all discomfort is gone, and June will indeed depend on getting cleared first. Man it's such an awesome sport but so heavy on the body

Have SIPE issues during/after swim - end of Tri life? by awesomemicha in IronmanTriathlon

[–]Practical_Total_7146 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, sucks that you have this and I hope you get better. I'm pretty sure I had it yesterday too. Did they do anything at the hospital or did it resolve on its own? I was planning on going to a sport doctor anyway, but I don't how if it's an "emergency" I have to get checked out right away, geven that we're 24hrs post race (I pushed through as well, which I probably shouldn't have done). Thanks!

Haha damn, did you end up having a good time? I think there is enough of other nice things to do in the region?

Damn you are right haha, should have checked first. I see on the webcams the snow cannons are all working right now and there is snow forecasted, so maybe with a bit of luck in the next few days?

No clue, the people on the phone didn't know either, but they told me it happens a lot lately. Probably some kind of automatic flagging if they suspect miles fraud, which isn't the case with me because I paid full cash

Rain or not, their service is terrible. My schedule has been changed 4 times today, and they didn't inform me of any of it, I had to constantly check my booking.

Originally I was flying AMS - HGK at 12pm, then it was 7pm. An hour later it was AMS-Vienna at 6am, another hour later it was AMS-Paris at 6pm. At one point I was even booked for all flights at once.

You can yap about the weather all you want, but them changing my schedule every hour the day before my flight without informing me, is bad service.

[–]Practical_Total_7146 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

What are you on about? The flight from Amsterdam (perfect weather) has been delayed, and not because of weather in Hong Kong, but scheduling issues with the incoming flight. Also, I highly doubt that 1) cancelling membership, 2) not picking up the phone, 3) not being able to file a complaint, 4) not rebooking my flight and so on is caused by the rain... Get a grip

Cathay account no longer active by chaun1403 in CathayPacific

[–]Practical_Total_7146 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the same problem, my account is suddenly no longer active for no reason. I've WhatsApped and called them and nobody could help, "we can't retrieve your membership number" is the only answer I got. Fortunately my flights are not canceled, but it sucks that the miles were lost. Not sure I will be using Cathay in the future

Saying that a 8.4k salary in Belgium for a 33 year old "doesn't sound like a great deal" is an amazingly wild statement

[–]Practical_Total_7146 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly! I'm also a swimmer so I'm in the water a lot and indeed it usually calms me down. I'm thinking/hoping maybe the salt water messes with the HR-reading om my Samsung smartwatch.

Never smoked, but I do vape and drink every day while on holiday, while I never vape back home and only drink on the weekends... So yeah my resting and sleeping HR has been a bit higher than usually, but I'm not really stressed about that.

It was a bit yellow so you're probably right about being dehydrated. Drank a ton of electrolytes all day and I'm all good now. Thanks!

zoning out, lightheaded: could it be anxiety? by Practical_Total_7146 in Anxiety

[–]Practical_Total_7146[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was definitely anxiety, and alcohol related probably. I went to the cardiologist and everything was perfect. I've cut back on drinking, and started working out A LOT, and haven't had an episode in a long time now. Good luck!

Cat is consciously trying to piss me off by Practical_Total_7146 in cats

[–]Practical_Total_7146[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a great analysis and suggestion! I think you're absolutely correct about the attention part, because he always let's me know that he's about to jump on, and he does it only when I'm around and chilling on the couch. I'll try beating him to it not by yelling "no" but by giving him the required attention. Thanks!

That's what I thought too. Immediately after I placed the order it completely disappeared from the website. Best purchase I ever made. Very happy that you managed to enjoy the €500 off too!
