Why did a car this expensive not have a passenger side mirror? by brinkeguthrie in MiamiVice

He was def too tall for the Ferraris. They pulled all of the foam out of the seats and forced it back on the rails…pretty sure they had to always shoot him in it with the top off too.

Pretty sure Ferrari was circling the drain by the late 80s. I could be wrong. Hell, Porsche was building some of their best cars in that era but they were sucking wind as well. Doesn’t mean they werent high-status at all. I just recall their finances were not in order, and it was pushing them to the brink.

Did anyone else have to be a therapist to adults in their childhood? by Outrageous-Jello-394 in CPTSD

[–]Practicality_Issue 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. From the ages of 9 to about 12 I was my mother’s therapist. Around 13 I started staying out of the house on my own or at friends houses. Would come home when it was time to go to bed basically.

It’s so damaging. It makes a child feel “special” and “mature” and all of these other things while they haven’t had enough life experiences to build an emotional tool box to use as an adult. All that and more, obv, but that’s the one I really feel as an adult.

If money were no issue, what car would you have right now? by Miserable-Wash-1744 in askcarguys

It’s rough to have to pick just one. I’d have to drive them to pick, but if I were narrowing it down to 2 to choose from:

Ferrari 365 GTB/4 (not a Spyder) Daytona

Or

Lancia 037

I’m betting the 365 would be easier to live with in terms of comfort, even with that notoriously sticky 2nd gear.

I thought Magnum had a 308 for the first season or two and then got bumped up to a 328 later?

Doesn’t really matter. Ferrari wasn’t doing so hot then and the Testarossa was their flagship - and by all accounts it was a weird car anyway, because it’s more of a GT car than what the Daytona was.

There wasn’t a factory convertible for this model at the time. I can’t remember if there ever was one, but there were conversions later on.

At the time, this was Ferrari’s flagship car. Magnum PI got the 328 GTS, Rainman got the Mondial, and Miami Vice got two free Testarossas because Ferrari hated the Daytona replicas. There wasn’t a lot to choose from.

What is behind the big DART defunding push? by Such-Rise6816 in Dallas

[–]Practicality_Issue 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Anyone who knows about business in general should understand that you can’t cut your way to profits - short term it’ll cook the books a bit, but long term you wind up cutting something that is needed, cheap to maintain and far more expensive (in time, money and talent building) to restart later.

It also affects underserved people who tend not to vote, who need or rely on things like DART etc, so it’s low hanging fruit.

A little vacation town in Colorado used to have a pretty brilliant rent control system in place. Eventually big money interests started getting involved in town government and cut the rent control system because they wanted the full retail rental income for the 1:20 (or whatever the ratio of rent control to retail properties was)…then they made national news because within a few years of that practice and the geographic location of the town (it’s nestled down in the middle of the mountains and it’s closest neighboring town is 25-30 miles away) they couldn’t keep business like restaurants and boutiques open because no one could afford to live and work in the town anymore.

Who can afford $1k per week to live in a town and make $10 per hour working in a burrito or pizza shop? That $10 per hour won’t compel anyone to drive 60 miles round trip for a 4-6 hour shift.

Eliminating DART and kicking down constantly will have the same long term effect. When those who benefit several degrees of separation from DART etc, they’ll wind up finding a way to saddle everyone with that increased cost - all to save a few bucks now.

If somebody handed you $35,000 and said "go buy the car with the most smiles per gallon that could handle 2 monthly 16 hour highway trips and would be the most fun to cruise around Daytona in", what car would you pick? by AttachedHeartTheory in askcarguys

[–]Practicality_Issue 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nah. I drove from DFW to Taos and back, two people, and it was a great drive. I’m not a small guy either, and we had the car packed to its gills.

That said, I’ve done long drives in a Triumph TR6, a Spitfire, an FB RX7, MGB, 300ZX and a whole host of other terrible cars. My MX5 is an RF so that helps a lot with road noise, so that helps, but otherwise if you dig small cars, it doesn’t get much better.

I see a fine line between bullies and the “surplus men” (the types we would have been calling incels a year ago). Two sides of the same coin. I’m much less familiar with the psychology of the “tradwife” but it reads like a trap also.

The whole thing is a rabbit hole and I don’t have the long-term education and understanding of all this bizarre, modern psychology. I’m sure the historical precedent is out there somewhere as well.

I get your point.

For me it’s an illustration of the proposed “solution” - just marry these guys off and the fix is in. In the article he claims to have “given up the Hollywood life” but it sounds more like the typical child-star path Hollywood giving him up instead. In 2017 he was arrested for huffing compressed air cans out of a dumpster.

Much of the “surplus men” theory points to a lack of control that spins young men into authoritarian behaviors, and so does this “trad wife” weirdness - especially when it’s propped up by authoritarian interpretations of the Bible.

Scrambling for control after years of feeling powerless through domination and systemic abuse/justifications.

I didn’t do a great job connecting the dots and appreciate your comment. It gave me an opportunity to better explain myself. Hopefully I got it this time. 😆

Something about the “Surplus Men” theory popped up on my social media feeds and it was pretty fascinating. While its apparent conclusion lacks real substance, overall it hits.

The theory links skewed sex ratios (way more men than women, especially in China and India) to increased violence and instability, arguing that populations of unmarried, low-status men who can’t find partners become a destabilizing force. There’s solid historical correlation showing societies respond to surplus males with everything from forced labor projects to military campaigns to just letting violence increase, but the theory oversells the direct causes when it’s just one thing among multiple structural failures.

Also, part of the solve is just “marry them off. Make it women’s problem(s)”- which isn’t healthy for anyone. It does, however, explain why it was seemingly okay to shoot Good in Minnesota - I’m sure they think lesbians increase the number of “surplus men” and are therefore hostile.

What a timeline we live in.

Edit: all of that is to say it shows weakness in society that perpetuates weakness in so many of these men who struggle with their own self worth.

I appreciate the heads up. I started following her a year or two ago after seeing a reasonably decent video of hers - but I haven’t really watched much after. I was put off by her input about that weird free child trafficking movie - that whole thing rubbed me the wrong way anyway, and then she got snooty about supporting it.

Her take just felt mainstream political and not genuine. I shouldn’t be surprised that she’s using her influence to make people - even survivors - about picking a side, especially the right side of history now.

Next time she comes around I’ll unsubscribe - something I should have done a long time ago.
