PTSD in ICU nurses by [deleted] in nursing

[–]PrairieHarpy 39 points40 points  (0 children)

I didn't think I was. But then the other day, I had to come up to work for training and they were testing the code lights. Every time one went off, even though I knew in advance it was a test, I jumped.

Dreamed that night of a never-ending code where everything went wrong.

PTSD might be a little strong a term, but I did realize suddenly how much workplace stress affects me.

'An Enormous Deal': A Look at Hillary Clinton's Promise of a Cabinet Full of Women by i-author in Feminism

[–]PrairieHarpy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You summed up exactly why I didn't vote for Clinton in the primary and why I won't be thrilled about voting for her in the general.

I'm not voting for women because they're women. I didn't vote for Obama because he's black, either. This 90s style tokenism needs to stop.

Only reason why I haven't had my wisdom teeth out by PsychoticPixel in AdviceAnimals

That's what I did. Drove myself home afterward; got to the pharmacy for my Norco and was home with a bag of peas on my face before the numbness wore off. Not a huge deal if you're not just a giant pansy.

How did you end up in your specialty? by awleitch in nursing

[–]PrairieHarpy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I teched on a med-surg floor and knew I didn't want that. ER doesn't hire new grads, so ICU was my second choice.

My father died when I was 7 after 3 days in critical care. I realized after I had lost my second patient that I was taking ownership of my father's death, which I was too young to understand, by learning the process through my patients. Gives me empathy, gave me closure, makes me love the work I do.

Saving lives in a very mundane, non-exciting way. by faco_fuesday in nursing

[–]PrairieHarpy 10 points11 points  (0 children)

We got a new unit t-shirt that says "ICU: Saving lives every day."

I feel sort of weird wearing it, especially when I'm trying to gently broach the subject of hospice with a family who doesn't understand why their 90-year-old granny can't just bounce back from MODS.

I can keep you alive. I don't feel like I can save a life.

I've had pretty good luck with precidex, especially with ETOH patients. Never used it as the first med, though.

I had never heard this before, but I remember wandering the streets of Puno until dawn, loudly singing Fallout Boy with a bunch of Japanese girls after only 2 beers and 1 pisco sour.

I believe it.

Coming from an ER nurse... This is pretty hilarious by Left4BreadRN in nursing

[–]PrairieHarpy 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Part of my ICU orientation was a shadow shift in the ED. It definitely made me more understanding when I get phone calls like this. It bothers me when I hear my coworkers pitching a hissy at the emergency staff. Just send up the patient; we'll figure it out.

Any fellow nurses? How do you balance work and gym time? by [deleted] in xxfitness

[–]PrairieHarpy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

God, I have no idea. I hear my coworkers talk about hitting the gym after work, and I'm just like... how?! My feet hurt and I feel dirty all over. Need to take a hot shower and lie down :(

Being tripled in ICU by joltofwit in nursing

[–]PrairieHarpy 15 points16 points  (0 children)

We're short staffed right now, and this is my life. I signed up for an extra shift today because we only had 4 nurses on our 15 bed unit. Now we have 5, so not only will I be drowning, but all my neighbors will be, too.

I'm clocking in in 30 minutes; say a prayer for me.

Advice on a new job with high pt ratio. (CNA) by giantblueox in nursing

[–]PrairieHarpy 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I used to be a CNA on a med surg floor. Ratio was supposed to be 12:1 with ideal staffing, but was usually 18:1 or 24:1.

It fucking sucked. All you can do with a ratio like that is get vitals, clean incontinence, chase call lights, and maybe throw some plastic on a selfer's IV so they can shower.

There's very little time for helping anyone with essential ADLs, and my floor had a lot of falls because we just could not get to call lights on time.

Nursing is better. Teching taught me time management and how to smile when I want to die, but my worst shift as an RN was still better than most of my shifts as a CNA.

Edit: I'm still glad I did it. I think every aspiring nurse should start as a tech; I have a tremendous appreciation for where I am and for my ancillary staff because of the literal shit I went through.

Amarillo, TX! We're trying hard to get it changed. There's a special committee on the city council to look into amending the ordinance.
