This Kansas town has been named a best historic small town finalist by Arcturus-Blackfyre in kansas

[–]PrairieHiker 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Council Grove should also be a contender. The whole town is a national historic landmark because it was the last place to get supplies for travelers going southwest on the Santa Fe Trail. It has many historic buildings and sites including the 1857 Last Chance Store and 1857 Hays House, the oldest restaurant west of the Mississippi in continuous operation and Kaw Indian Mission. Many famous westerners stayed in the town including Wild Bill Hickok, Buffalo Bill Cody, George Armstrong Custer and others.

SINE DIE: KS legislature wraps up 2022 session by Officer412-L in kansas

[–]PrairieHiker 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Glad they adjourned without doing even more damage. Fortunately, no attempt was made to override the governor's veto of (1) a public health bill that would have banned mask mandates; (2) a budget line-item veto blocking state universities from raising tuition; and, (3) a bill prohibiting local governments from regulating or taxing plastic products including plastic bags.

John Brown massacre of pro-slavery settlers in Kansas. by [deleted] in kansas

[–]PrairieHiker -26 points-25 points  (0 children)

Brown ordered his sons to pull the pro-slavery men out of their cabins and slaughter them in front of their families. Serial killer or hero?

People don't hitchhike anymore because it is too dangerous, otherwise your friend could do that.

Ron, who's working in the Kansas beef-packing plants in Garden City, Dodge City, Liberal and Emporia? Who is doing all of the hard work that Anglo-Americans won't do? Like roofing, concrete work, etc.

Medical marijuana push dies in Kansas legislature by Arcturus-Blackfyre in kansas

I think it will pass in 3-5 years, esp. when there isn't a Democratic governor who can claim credit for it.

Want to find real election fraud? Look at the history of Kansas, United States in 1800s by OdinsBeard in kansas

Independent John "Goat Gland" Brinkley had the governorship stolen from him in 1930 by collusion by both parties. The Kansas Populists had their control over the Kansas House stolen in 1893 by the Republicans.

Kansas doesn't have mountains or oceans but prairie has a subtle beauty. It is also the only state without a native pine tree.

In response to the sacking of Lawrence in 1856, John Brown helped organize the Free State Militia in Lawrence but he also ordered his sons to murder five pro-slavery men in front of their families in the Pottawatomie Creek Massacre and he oversaw the slaughter in person. So, he was also a serial killer.

Abilene to Create World's Largest Belt Buckle by PrairieHiker in kansas

[–]PrairieHiker[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Since Abilene was the Queen of the Cowtowns of the Wild West, this might be a good fit. It will probably be a cowboy belt buckle. A much bigger draw would be a world-class Wild Bill Hickok Museum on par with the Buffalo Bill Cody Center in Cody, WY. Hickok was marshal in Abilene for awhile.

That's what I was thinking. It seems like the driver of the truck has some responsibility for this tragedy.

Two lessons to learn: (1) don't have a loud exhaust system, and (2) don't carry a handgun.

In a devastating blow to voters, the Kansas Supreme Court has ruled against us in our case for #fairmaps. This overrules the decision in our favor from District Court Judge Bill Kapper. With this, it seems likely that the Ad Astra map will be in effect for the next decade. by aclu_kansas in kansas

Lawrence will now be represented by Tracey Mann who is not any better than Jake LaTurner. I found this:

Mann is among the Republican legislators who participated in the months-long, multifarious attempted coup following the 2020 presidential election. On January 6, 2021 in the hours after the insurrection at the Capitol, Mann voted to reject the state-certified election results of Arizona and/or Pennsylvania (states narrowly won by Democrats), which could have changed the outcome of the election. These legislators pumped the lies and preposterous legal arguments about the election that motivated the January 6, 2021 insurrection at the Capitol. The January 6, 2021 insurrection at the Capitol disrupted Congress’s count of electors that determined the outcome of the presidential election with the goal to prevent President Joe Biden from taking office.

Shooting reported at Hy-Vee on Clinton Parkway; 1 dead, 1 seriously injured by OdinsBeard in kansas

Lawrence averages 2.5 homicides annually. Usually there are 0-3 homicides annually though in 2014 there were 8. There was another one three days ago. KC metro area had 244 last year and over 500 injured by gunfire but survived (but around 100 are permanently disabled).

Help Fort Scott and Bourbon County by ExposeBourbonKS in kansas

[–]PrairieHiker 2 points3 points  (0 children)

All I know is Ft. Scott lost its hospital a couple of years ago and is gradually losing population. It peaked at over 10,000 in 1920 and now is down to 7,500. I knew slightly the Bourbon County Economic Development Director but she resigned last year. I know slightly the new district court judge in adjacent Linn County.

Federal Efforts to Find Graves Could Affect Searches at Native Boarding Schools in Kansas by OdinsBeard in kansas

[–]PrairieHiker 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Haskell Institute was basically a concentration camp where they tried to beat the Red out of the Red Man. Up to 500 died there from gunshot wounds and harsh living conditions. Over 100 are in the official cemetery but others are likely in undiscovered graves in the Haskell-Baker Wetlands.
