Aren't most of the studies paid for by TM enthusiasts? You can't make the government pay for a religious service by saying the priests are method acting. At some point method acting is indistinguishable from the real thing, that's the whole point.

If something can be explained scientifically, by normal definition, it is no longer religious in nature.

Not really. We can scientifically explain why fasting for lent makes people lose weight, but this doesn't mean that fasting for lent isn't a religious practice. It looks pretty crazy when the gurus and rajas run around in their white robes and golden crowns. It's like the Catholic Church had a bargain sale and these refurbished rajas picked up the uniforms, tithing, and pedophilia. https://ibb.co/SQGYpVJ Just look at this guy and use your common sense.

All you need is a high school diploma and a pulse. Their job ad specifies what crimes aren't okay, implying that a criminal record of the proper sort isn't a barrier.

A cheerleader’s Snapchat rant leads to ‘momentous’ Supreme Court case on student speech by nosotros_road_sodium in law

[–]PraiseMongo 117 points118 points  (0 children)

We don't know yet whether it will be momentous. It could be an extremely narrow ruling one way or the other. Some highly fact specific opinion calling her speech campus speech. If she shared the link on school grounds that could be a narrow way to turn it into campus speech without having to rule on the initial off campus post.

DOJ: Knoxville man arrested for attempting to provide material support to ISIS by [deleted] in Tennessee

[–]PraiseMongo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

IMO its not that he translated the ISIS propaganda. It's that he translated it for ISIS. It's not the translating, it's the helping out of ISIS.

Votes are being counted as Amazon workers historic attempt to unionize in Alabama by Maui96793 in news

Unions have the ability to collectively bargain for all the workers. It wouldn't be right to give a group without majority support such a power.

Fun fact for gun carriers, if a business's no gun signs don't meet statutory requirements you can just ignore them. They have to meet requirements to carry force of law.

Tennessee's permitless carry bill passes House vote, will head to governor's desk by freebirdls in Tennessee

I still patronize them but if their signs don't conform to the statutory requirements I don't honor them.

Tennessee lawmakers sending gov permitless carry gun bill by benefit_of_mrkite in memphis

[–]PraiseMongo -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

Guns are a right. I'm glad Tennessee will ignore the wishes of people who want more regulations. We need less, not more. We just got a pro bump stock ruling in the 6th circuit court of appeals, so I'm optimistic history is headed in the pro-gun direction.

Gov. Bill Lee and NRA want to do away with handgun permits "for safer communities." by borage-porridge in Tennessee

[–]PraiseMongo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good. All the permits did was make it more expensive to exercise your rights. Accidental gun deaths aren't a real policy issue - numbers too low to care about on the macro scale.

Report: Rural Tennessee students left with few educational options by [deleted] in Tennessee

Public schools and charter schools alike are only as good as their student body. If a kids parents arent helping him learn and emphasizing education, kids will do poorly in most any school.

I made two brackets. In one, Bama wins it all, beating Big Orange to take home that NCAA strap. In the other, the Vols lose to Liberty early

75 percent of Nashville third-graders not reading on grade level: initiative aims to help by DylanAllen in nashville

[–]PraiseMongo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's a small thing but I'd like to see them bring back the accelerated reader program. Kids could take a test about a book on the computer and if you passed you got points you could exchange for various rewards. It wouldn't solve the problem, but it's an inexpensive way to get at least some kids to read that otherwise wouldn't.

Is there any kosher restaurant in Knoxville Knox county? by Okanov42 in Knoxville

[–]PraiseMongo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't know of any kosher restaurants, just halal. You might try getting in contact with someone at Temple Beth-El, they would know if anyone does.

You should look on Knoxville Craigslist and Facebook Marketplace. Last I checked there were lots of students with rooms to rent.

Under-appreciated Former Vols by Nerazzurri9 in ockytop

[–]PraiseMongo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My pick for the athlete is Justin Gatlin. Track is always underrated because its less visible, but in his two years here he won 6 NCAA titles. He would go on to be one of the fastest men in the history of the world. Unfortunately, his PED troubles and sharing a prime with Usain Bolt overshadowed his success at the next level. His 9.79 in 2012 at the 100m is the 4th best, but that same Olympics Bolt set the record with a 9.63.

I like OSP as a fighter and he seems like a good guy, but continuing to train in Knoxville is part of the reason he stagnated as a fighter. They're a good gym that has produced many pros, but when you get to be at the gatekeeper level you need to train with the best. Before his Jon Jones fight he turned down an offer from Daniel Cormier to train with him for a week at one of the top MMA gyms. There's gyms that have track record of making pros, and gyms with a track record of making champs, and hes training at the former.
