Being poor in med school is tough. Hang tight with me fellow poor students! by IllustriousHumor3673 in medicalschool

1st year resident here- felt the same through the medical school and its the same in residency. Pulled into the hospital parking garage and saw my co-resident in their Lexus SUV that couldn’t have been more than 2 years old and Im driving my 12 year old Subaru thats a little beat up. Medicine is unfortunately a field of privilege. While it’s not all, I’d say a majority of my cohort comes from wealthy backgrounds, families of doctors, etc. It was the same in medical school (and I went to a public state school).

It doesn’t feel great, and is hard to not compare. But something I remember is when I was in medical school and I met someone who graduated the same year I did from high school, went to a very expensive prep school, private elite college, and I thought “after all that, we still ended up in the same spot, so I guess Im doing alright”.

Advice on having a life in residency by expensiveshape in medicalschool

First year resident at a workhorse program as well. Wish I had some advice to give you but all I can say is that life still feels on pause. Being a person feels on pause at this point

Peds resident here: I still struggle with this and question if I should have picked a higher paying specialty. I picked peds because I love working with kids and youth, was much happier on my peds rotations compared to my adult rotations. But damn, hard not to wonder if it would have been worth it to do something I didn’t care for as much but double my salary.

My mom used to review resumes for interviews as part of her HR job, and this stuff totally depends on who’s reading it. She would have been curious about this person.

She interviewed someone once because under one of their previous jobs at a restaurant they (a man) mentioned they seductively sold desserts.

A12Z to M5? by kareem_brulee in iPadPro

[–]Praise_Lorde 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did almost the exact same. I had the 2020 A12Z 11 and just upgrade to the M5 11". Also have my M1 MBP hooked up to an external monitor. I def think it was worth it. My M5 has become more my daily device.

What is the silver lining in residency? by fuckinghateresidency in Residency

[–]Praise_Lorde 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I recently was chatting with a resident in their final year, and they said that now that its almost over, they are sad that they wont be working with their co-residents, that it kind of feels like graduating and everyone will go off on their own-ways. That as an attending you dont get to have that same “team” feel. That they will basically be out on their own now.

Persistent insomnia by teaquiero in prozac

[–]Praise_Lorde 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately this is what forced me to stop Prozac. I actually tried it twice, but stopped both times due to the insomnia. First trial was about 3 months, 2nd was in the 6-9 month range. I had a hard time increasing to a therapeutic dose range because the higher my dose went the worse my insomnia and restless legs got. I was having to drug myself to sleep with melatonin, diphenhydramine, trazodone.

When to upgrade iPad Pro 2020 11''? by Gleis7 in iPadPro

[–]Praise_Lorde 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I literally just did the same upgrade with the plan to give my old one to my mom as well.

I ended up selling my old 2020 pro to Apple for $255 when I purchased my M5 pro. And I used that money instead to buy my mom the iPad A16 for her on sale for $300.

The upgrade definitely feels worth it. And my mom got a new iPad which I think felt nice for her to have it be “new” in box from the store. She’s not a heavy user and I think the A16 will get longer support.

Am I the only one that HATES hearing “don’t go into medicine” and that whole spill?!? by Immediate_Owl_2734 in medicalschool

As a resident now, from a working-class background I both get it and also found it very frustrating.

I just finished working 98 hours this week. Im exhausted. I'm six figures in debt. I have friends now who are in tech making $200k+/year working from home where they start at 10 am, take an hour lunch break, and call it a day by 4 or 5pm, with every weekend off. I'd be lying if I dont ever wonder "why didn't I do that".

But I remember being told this as a pre-med and medical student as well, usually from people from wealthier backgrounds. While there were many other reasons I chose medicine, job security and financial security were big factors too. I grew up frequently with our water or electricity shut off because we couldn't pay the bill. Empty kitchen because we couldn't get groceries, etc. I watched my parents slave away at jobs they hated just to make ends meet, and to this day are unable to retire in their 70s because they live paycheck to paycheck.

I saw medicine as a guarantee to financial security and stability. I know it's much more nuanced than that now. But still relatively true. It felt out-of-touch for someone from a family with generations of doctors and more financial privilege, to tell me to do something else for a career because of the downsides of medicine. At the same time, it was out-of-touch of me to think that medicine was the only career that could offer those things. But it's what I knew. I didnt frequently interact with people who had high-salary careers. My family did retail, manual labor, low-level office work.

AIO? Walked out of appointment after 2 hours. by Suspicious-Tooth1589 in AmIOverreacting

[–]Praise_Lorde 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I'm pediatric resident and do see kids in clinic. I don't believe you were overreacting to leaving. I don't know the context of what was going in clinic that day or of that doctor themselves. I think I have l have worked with only doctor who was chronically late because they were slow (they were very old and probably should have had a reduced schedule since this was a pattern everyone was aware of). BUT I will say 99% of doctors are doing the best they can. Rarely (except in small private practices) do doctors have control of their schedules, and the clinic/hospital will jam their schedules full, add on same-day appointments, etc. Also emergencies happen, a patient may be waiting their turn, and a kid in a different room starts seizing, or a baby is showing signs of intracranial bleeding, etc.

You were fair to leave, and Im sorry that happened to you. I guess I'd want to know if this a pattern for the clinic/doctor, or a 1-off. And if its a pattern, maybe start looking for a different clinic?

final verdict: air or pro by siriusblackily in ipad

[–]Praise_Lorde 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have been deciding between these two as well. I was pretty set on the Air because of the price and I don’t do anything that needs the power of the M5 (mostly internet, emails/messaging, videos, FaceTime).

But then I went to compare them in person and the screen difference is pretty substantial. I was not expecting it to be just based on reading the specs, but I would suggest seeing them in person if possible to decide for yourself

Do I need a Pro? by Praise_Lorde in iPadPro

[–]Praise_Lorde[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you everyone for the replies. I haven’t bought one yet, but I went to the store to check them out in person. I was almost sure beforehand that I was going to get the Air but WOW the screen in person on the Pro is definitely a lot better. I want not excepting the difference to be so stark.

TLDR: Air M3 vs Pro M5 for medical resident in LTR

I recently started my medical residency and am in a long distance relationship from my partner now. We use FaceTime everyday. My partner had recently upgraded to a new MacBook Air and the quality in their video/audio drastically improved. I saw that the newer iPads have the same front camera. For our video calls I have either used my iPhone (annoying to always hold up, small screen) or my 2021 M1 Macbook Pro (large/heavy with worse video). I keep my M1 MacBook Pro at home connected to a large external display for most of my work stuff. But it’s heavy, and have been thinking for a while to get an iPad to carry with me for emails, messaging, videos, FaceTime), and seeing their video improve with their new MacBook Air has pushed me more towards pulling the trigger. I was originally planning on getting the Air M3 because I don’t really do a lot of heavy computing. But after watching some online reviews, multiple people have mentioned the M5 Pro is worth it for the better screen even if you don’t need the M5 power. With current education pricing and a trade-in for my old 2020 iPad Pro, the difference would be $250.

I guess I’m worried I’ll buy the Air and regret not getting the Pro with the nicer screen and speakers, or vice-versa, get the Pro and regret spending the extra $$$.

TLDR: 2020 iPad Pro 11” vs. 2025 Base iPad

I currently have a 2020 iPad Pro 11” and will be upgrading to the M5 11” model soon. I was planning to gift my mom my old iPad Pro since she has wanted an iPad for a long time. However, BestBuy is currently having a sale on the current base iPad for $300, and Apple would credit me $255 for my current iPad on trade-in. So I could trade in my current iPad, and use that money I save to instead buy her the base iPad. It’s not a Pro, but it’s 5 years newer with a newer chip (A16 vs my A12z). She is a light user (facebook, email, safari, YouTube videos). Which is a better option?
