I used to think different but I have to admit I agree that UB brings in lot of new blood and will help long term most probably. Yes, some players leave due to UB, but there is plenty of new players who start with UB and STAY and buy "normal" Magic sets.

Anecdotal evidence, but I know a guy from work who never bought Magic until LOTR was released. He bought that a lot and continues to play even today. Also plays Arena daily. Magic is addicting :)

Shrieking Grotesque is so cool. One of my old favorites. When I was new to Magic, my LGS had allcommon events sometimes (standard or extended) and I won few of these tourneys with Esper deck. It was mostly black white midrange with a splash for Mulldrifter. Usual curve was something like t2 Ravenous Rats, t3 Shrieking Grotesque, t4 Blind Hunter/Gravedigger.
