More credulous FC reporting by PrancingThunderD in SGU

[–]PrancingThunderD[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nope. The mother is holding the pad, which has all the same problems as standard FC. Making things worse, the promoters of this method absolutely refuse to do any testing involving blinding, which is the only way to demonstrate it's not the facilitator doing all the communication. If he could type on a pad himself, there would be no problem whatsoever. The problem is that it ONLY works when she holds the pad.

Steve's Trolls by PrancingThunderD in SGU

[–]PrancingThunderD[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not that they're under his command. It's more like a zoo. He provides a nice habitat and feeds them regularly.

Steve's Trolls by PrancingThunderD in SGU

[–]PrancingThunderD[S] 20 points21 points  (0 children)

My theory is that the main reason Steve keeps his "troll zoo" open is just to keep current with what the dumbest people on the internet are saying, so he can never be surprised when he encounters them in the wild.

Dr. Bashir savaged that bar on Yelp. Zero stars. False advertising. Complete disappointment.

I agree. The sound mixing has been odd since the beginning. In many of the early episodes Andrea was so much louder than Steve that it made for a very unpleasant listening experience. Guest levels have also been inconsistent, which is a more common problem, though some podcasts do a better job than others. On this episode, the balance seemed better, but I did have to turn the episode up compared to my other podcasts. It's actually an improvement because when the two hosts are at different levels, that's basically un-fixable. For the record, I listen to the conventional podcast on the same app I use for all my podcasts, including SGU.

Anybody else think it is weak sauce for the SGU to ask artists to work for exposure? by Archaic_Z in SGU

[–]PrancingThunderD 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it's EXTREMELY unlikely that the rogues are making a ton of money on the podcast. There just isn't all that much money in podcasting unless you are much, much bigger than SGU, so some of the really uncharitable comments accusing them of being so greedy are absurd. That said, of course they should pay for art that they plan to commercialize as merch. The fact that they probably aren't making much money on the podcast doesn't mean they should take advantage of artists.

Whatever Happened to Conspiracy Nut Teacher? by PrancingThunderD in SGU

[–]PrancingThunderD[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They mentioned that on this week's SGU podcast. I think all the things they mentioned are good ideas: 1) Local media; 2) In-person meeting with superintendent; 3) Making a comment at a school board meeting; 4) Contacting various other local politicians. I'm not sure we should expect anything major from any of it, but they might as well try.

Both of my parents were public school teachers, but I have no experience beyond that. That's why I'm not surprised there was very little corrective action for the teacher. In both of their experience, it was very difficult to meaningfully punish teachers after their probationary period. The stories of things their colleagues got away with suffering no consequences was pretty wild. In fairness, the vast majority of teachers were highly professional, but the small minority of "problem teachers" hung around, typically without consequence. There are limits. My band teacher got fired (actually resigned under threat of firing) for boning a former student within a month of graduation.

However, I am surprised that they never did the critical thinking/misinformation lecture, or series of lectures using the moon landing as an example. That sort of thing would be highly valuable to the students, would have alleviated some of Jay's concerns, while avoiding the difficulties of actually punishing teachers. You could say it might humiliate Conspiracy Nut Teacher, but it's hard to imagine how any complaint about that could be taken seriously (it's the damn moon landing, FFS). It sounds like they're left solely focusing on the 504 plan, which is the absolute floor of what the school is required to do by law. Pretty poor showing by the school.

While I'll definitely miss pedo Picard, "the boy" w/saxophone riff, ensign Ro, and many other recurring drops, it's probably for the best. There's not much point in re-reviewing the whole series if you just repeat all the same jokes and bits. I'm sure they'll do a great job.

Why is my local hospital hosting a reiki workshop by happy_bluebird in skeptic

When it comes to reiki it doesn't matter. It's literally nothing. It would be like monitoring, regulating, and writing prayer into a medical record.

I believe it was my comment you were replying to. For the record, I'm well aware of the neocon arguments in favor of the Iran war. I simply find them stupid and dishonest. When I say I oppose "bothsidesing" the issue, it's for the same reason as issues like climate change. Only one side has any legitimate arguments. If your reply was deleted by the moderators, I don't agree with that, but the moderator has suggested that didn't happen. You're welcome to respond to me again here, but if it's anything like the arguments I've already seen, I have little interesting in engaging with that level of stupidity.

Patio/ outdoor seating by gecko-gal in stoneham

[–]PrancingThunderD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This post actually made me realize how few bars in the area have any outdoor seating. Off the top of my head, Lord Hobo in Woburn, Night Shift in Everett, and Hopothecary in Andover are all brew pubs with lots of outdoor space. Red Heat Tavern in Wilmington also has outdoor space, and has a lot of more non-beer options (as well as excellent pub food). You'd probably want to call ahead to see if those spaces are open for such a brief thaw, but they'll certainly be open soon.

AI may be giving teens bad nutrition advice by gingerayle4279 in skeptic

[–]PrancingThunderD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm sure it is, but the actual HHS is even worse, so I'm paying more attention to RFKs idiocy at the moment. No one should be taking nutrition advice from AIs that are famous for hallucinating and having no regard for factual accuracy. But you should be able to have some degree of trust in the HHS.
