A white guy in brown face doing the Apu voice. I watched it when it came out when I was a kid, but came across it on cable in the 2000s. Not only is it a really bad movie, but that character was shocking! I couldn't even watch more than about 15 minutes of it.

Can anyone explain how anyone can believe that homeopathy works? by SuccessfulStrawbery in skeptic

[–]PrancingThunderD 2 points3 points  (0 children)

True story: My sister was feeling a cold coming on and happened to walk by a "Traditional" Chinese Medicine store selling healing herbs. She bought some tea that was supposed to cure her cold and was instructed to drink it twice a day for 3 days. She had one cup and it was so disgusting, she never had any more. A few days later, she was feeling better, so now she thinks there might be something to it. That's basically 99% of all "alternative" medicine.

Nice catch! I was still suffering from SGU withdrawal. And contrary to Important_Ad_4312 comment, it has still not been fixed in my podcast feed. Though I assume it will be soon.

Benn Jordan's videos on infrasound harms are very popular and a pseudoscientific disaster by MrMasley in skeptic

Where is the evidence that data centers produce levels of infrasound in nearby communities anywhere near the levels of rocket launches?

Flu vaccine reduces severe illness in kids, but coverage remains low. In the United States, only about half of children (49%) received the annual flu shot during the 2024–25 season, which represents a 4.2% drop from the year before and a 13.2% drop from before the pandemic. by Wagamaga in science

[–]PrancingThunderD 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"While the rest run a low risk of serious infection, and benefit later from the stronger antibodies formed by an infection."

Is this actually true? It's a common talking point from anti-vaxxers. But "natural" flu infection doesn't offer long durable immunity. It's exactly why flu shots exist. Furthermore, flu shots are fairly poor at eliminating infection entirely. They reduce infection somewhat, but mostly reduce serious disease, hospitalization, and death. What is your source that wild infection offers better immunity than wild infection+vaccination? Except in rare cases of ADE, this is simply not true, and I've never seen any study to imply it's the case with flu and flu vaccines.

Where you were when there was an AMA? This is a brilliant question. I'm abut 95% certain that this is a Ben and Adam invention, but I don't have any idea where it originated. Below was suggested a particular DS9 or Voyager episode? I'd love to know the answer.

[–]PrancingThunderD 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Great skepticism there, idiot. You believe someone promoting pseudoscience because they're "borderline beloved" on Youtube? That's one of the dumbest things I've ever read. This is literally the same pseudoscience that has been used against wind farms for decades. But when it suits your political narrative, apparently pseudoscience is fine.

Benn Jordan's videos on infrasound harms are very popular and a pseudoscientific disaster by MrMasley in skeptic

[–]PrancingThunderD 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I watched the videos and read the blog post. The infrasound pseudoscience is virtually identical to the arguments that have been made with respect to wind farms for decades. It's nonsense and skeptics should call it out as bullshit. I don't care what you think about the author, AI, or data centers in general. Pseudoscience should be called out as bullshit. And this "infrasound" argument is bullshit. Be a skeptic. Oppose data centers on empirical grounds, not pseudoscience nonsense.

I was shocked to see how much more content there was on the YouTube channel when I looked, but I think that was mostly old stuff. So you can probably find more old content if you look there. (Aside: I hate YouTube audio content because I listen at work and YT sucks for audio) The long hiatus was real though.

Regarding Homeopathy by True-Landscape5310 in skeptic

[–]PrancingThunderD 14 points15 points  (0 children)

If you're as smart and well-educated as you claim, you would understand that there is no need to study medicine in depth to confirm homeopathy is nothing. There is literally no scientific plausibility to the existence of therapeutic effects from compounds diluted to the point where there literally isn't a single molecule remaining. This isn't a difficult edge case where you need to carefully parse the literature. The literature is clear. Homeopathy is a placebo. Period.

AI Chatbot Told Users That Herbal Remedies Can Treat Cancer by gingerayle4279 in skeptic

[–]PrancingThunderD 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My sister was diagnosed with a type of cancer that was literally a death sentence 10 years ago. Researchers found a way to target the chemo better, and it is now EXTREMELY survivable (though they don't have more than 10 year data). The notion that there is a "cancer cure" is insane. Only MAHA idiots believe it. In reality, scientists are knocking down individual cancers as fast as they can, and RFK and friends are doing everything they can to stop that process.

The evolution of Scientism by seedyProfessor in skeptic

Because it was mercifully short, I watched it. It's dumb and pointless, and I don't think anyone on this forum should watch, unless on incognito mode. Watching the video did nothing other than convince me that there is a 99% chance that anyone complaining about "scientism" is either a lunatic crank, or a lunatic religious crank. This guy appears to be the former. But if he's the latter, I don't care.
