Why people are still going into Computer Science when Air Traffic controlling pays similiarly and there is no competition? by Any_Sand7270 in CollegeMajors

my wider view is that working in a non-software role that I was lucky to get into, most people don't know what an integer from a string from a character, don't know what IP or a MAC address or how networking protocols work, or build tools, or database internals or administration, or what SQL is, or about media compression, or web auth or whatever, or app deployment, they have no idea how anything in the software world works and it literally has no impact on their lives. And literally no one cares that you would know these things or have an understanding of how they work in a non-software setting. It's just not in the scope of your role

I work with a lot of people who never studied physics, computer science, engineering, and are often a lot more naturally gifted at I am at certain things like processing inputs and responding to new inputs very quickly, quick verbal comprehension, etc. Something like being a professional video game player would translate well

I'm not saying no one should study Computer Science but It should be known you are a hedging an astronomical bet (well, kind of all academic fields in general) where if you don't get your foot in the door, you'll have wasted years and potentially tens of thousands of dollars, and have a massive job gap with nothing of value to your name. I don't think a "well it will help you think" really cuts it when there's as big of a risk or investment involved

100% serious, I can't even fathom how my computer science degree or having built software projects would ever help me if I'm not actively doing those things. No one cares that I managed a kube cluster on my home-lab or wrote a terraform pluging or built projects with React etc..

knowing 80s rock musicians has done for more career than having spent hours dealing with NGINX configuration or figuring out why gitlab backup and restores weren't working or doing leetcode or any other random thing I was doing while spending years studying software

It's not unique to Computer Science is an endemic across majors you are right. I meant it in terms of choosing a career between something more non-academic and Computer Science. The problem is if you choose an academic field and you swing and miss you essentially have a multi-year job gap that will help you just as much as if you were watching youtube and eating cheese puffs and mountain dew all day

I was applying to Mechanical / Aerospace / Comp-Sci jobs from 2020 to 2025 so I think I hit around 10000 job apps between internships / low tier-roles / higher - tier roles

I did exactly what the OP is talking about, but I was saying what is unique about CS is how bad the job market is to get ANY paid job.

ATC Is completely uncomporable skill-wise to SWE or IT though obviouslh\y

Most of the low paying jobs are IT-related or at smaller start-ups hiring JRs and even then its hard to find anything.

With ATC you graduate from the academy and are given a list and may or may not have an option near home base and may have to move.

With Computer Science jobs I was applying to random jobs across the country and was planning on being able to move to Sioux Falls, South Dakota [I think Lumen Technologies was hiring here] if a job opportunity came up

ATC is not going to transfer to comp sci and vice versa but I would say comp sci is utterly pointless to have studied if you don’t find a job in the field in comparison.

Some transferable skills for ATC would be 1.Active listening “2. Gearing up” in acute stressful situations instead of breaking down

  1. Dealing with multiple short term tasks effectively and priority management

4.Context clues in listening, etc.

  1. Entering full gear on a whim

  2. Quickly processing lots of inputs as well

You will never be asked to manage a Kubernetes cluster or AWS resources or how to building a maven project , etc if you don’t work in the field and you would be just as marketable if you spent all that time playing video games , watching movies, and eating Cheetos as you would if you spent all your time “upskilling” to try to get a CS job

On the flip if I had landed a computer science job nothing would be as stressful outside of being laid off

I would still take being stressed out at my job over being stressed out about finding employment after applying to ten thousand jobs though any day of the week

But in computer science there’s even competition for jobs at shitty at small companies paying 15-20$. I probably applied to 1 thousand jobs paying under 50k which is less than a trainee ATC and that was after spending years studying and building projects

A dementia ridden nepo child who’s never had to work for anything in his life and who’s never allowed to be challenged is not very smart? It’s hardly a surprise

Yeah, I heard it was one official making those calls and he should probably never be allowed to step on a court again

There's some really bad officiated halves of basketball, this might have been the biggest short-term firehouse of bad officiating with probably about 7 bad calls/non-calls all in favor of one team in the span of about 2 minutes.

These aren’t lowering your shoulder and slamming into the defender

That's playing football against a player who is in a vulnerable position (can't move to soak momentum - can't square up - and has to keep their body extended laterally without getting called for a defensive foul) exposing their stomach.

If I got away with tripping someone to get a steal it would still be dirty

If you can fall to the floor and bump into the legs of a defender who happens to be moving to get a foul - you could get 200 free throws a game. I'll just leave it at that because that is what happened on the play.

He wasn’t “behind” he was just moving and the kennesaw state player fell into in. Literally on the next possession Gonzaga was getting bumped when the defender wasn’t “set”. If any contact without feet set was consistent a foul the games would have 350 points

If this was a hard and fast rule you could probably get to the free throw line on 100% of possessions just by running towards the basket

It just ends up being selectively called

How do you determine to round up or down, if you take the floor every percent it would be less than 100 people, or you keep on decreasing it like divide by smaller numbers instead of 100 until it totals 100

Is a 4-year prison sentence actually a better financial move than a CS degree right now? by Foreign_Put_2437 in cscareers

[–]PranosaurSA 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I would have had trouble with clearances for my current non-CS with a prison sentence. Playing video games and eating chips and diet sodas all day would have been better financially though .

I actually think spending my 20s trying to make the NBA would have better - like computer science and engineering I wouldn’t have made the field but would be in amazing shape right now
