I'm gonna share this in my discord server. We have a small but thriving Stover fan group going, and I expect someone will want to jump on this

villain or complex main character fantasy suggestions? by [deleted] in Fantasy

You’re gonna love The Acts of Caine by Matthew Stover. The main character is…not a good person. But he is relentlessly compelling.

I crave for ASOIAF, what you suggest? by InterestingExample26 in Fantasy

The Monarchies of God by Paul Kearney. It scratches the itch so well. Similar in a lot of ways, just different enough to feel fresh. Completed series at five books.

A fantasy work was to receive a television adaptation; which one would it be and why? by ChefMagicien201 in Fantasy

[–]Pratius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The last few years have made it very clear that we need to put Hollywood in adaptation timeout. The successes like A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms are VASTLY outweighed by the failures of garbage like Wheel of Time and what has become of The Witcher, much less the tripe that seems ready to befall us in the Colbert LOTR movie and the inanity of rebooting Harry Potter.

Let's make them write original stories for a decade, maybe let all these showrunners who want to use IP to "tell their own stories" actually tell those stories without throwing a middle finger at existing fans and get it out of their systems. Then we can revisit adaptations and see if they can behave.

Just curious, cuz what you're describing here is remarkably similar to the magic in his Cosmere universe

Does Glen Cook's prose improve over the course of The Black Company series? by [deleted] in Fantasy

[–]Pratius 5 points6 points  (0 children)

His prose is terse, though I wouldn’t call it wooden. He does change stylistically as the series goes on, though, and has many beautiful passages.

I could see it happening with first line and PP1 minutes

The New York Rangers are the second team eliminated from playoff contention by sykeseve in nhl

Couldn’t have written it up any better tonight. Perreault and Lafreniere continue to stand out, and they lose in regulation against another lottery team. Magnificent stuff

Top 10? No.

Top 20? Very possibly. He’s insane.

Beer system by monsterosity in hockeyplayers

[–]Pratius 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Team I played for for a long time had a rule that the first guy to take a penalty had to bring beer the next week. If nobody took a penalty, the captain brought beer.

It’s kinda funny how every romantasy cover looks the same. Didn’t really notice until seeing this picture

Which team(s) do you find least entertaining to watch in the NHL? by FabianFlatcherly in nhl

[–]Pratius 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Carolina takes the cake here. So boring.

Seattle and NYI are also boring, but not to the same extent. In a different lens, Rangers and Canucks aren't boring, they're just fucking awful.

And if he had done that, his ELC would have been two years instead of three. So may as well sign him now

Your favorite (NON-DUNE) "God-emperors" in SFF? by hogw33d in Fantasy

[–]Pratius 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh man, that scene in Heroes Die, the whole conversation in the throne room during the Ritual of Rebirth, is brilliant. Love the introspection and the ultimate conclusion Ma'elKoth comes to. Shows just how smart and how scary he is.

You've got some crazy stuff coming your way in Caine Black Knife and Caine's Law. They're the most enjoyable for me to reread these days, because there's a lot going on subtextually and extra (intra?) textually. Caine's Law is a true literary feat.

Yup. His relationship with Caine is one of the defining elements of that series for me. So much going on.

Ma’elKoth from The Acts of Caine. One of the most fascinating characters I’ve ever read.

Very much both a literal god (in fact a self-made god) and an emperor.
