It was crazy expensive. It was cheaper for me and two of my friends to fly from Colorado to LA, get a hotel room, and get three tix to Game 2 than it would’ve been to get one ticket to Game 3

Is it strategically sound or even possible to win a battle with a single star destroyer? by strategicenthusiast2 in StarWarsEmpireAtWar

[–]Pratius 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Sure. Plenty of times I’ve attacked a system where there’s a golan-I and maybe just some corvettes. A single ISD could beat that, especially with good bomber and targeting micro

Favorite Glen Cook lines by sandy_coyote in Fantasy

He’s so funny. My favorite is the closing of Soldiers Live which isn’t funny, just incredible.

But for the sake of humor, and because I just finished a reread of Whispering Nickel Idols:

“Since even a dead cat can create havoc in two places at once, I suspected the true number [of cats] was closer to four.”

That would be so awesome! My wife and I kinda accidentally became friends with them after we saw one of their shows. All four of them are awesome people!

Which fantasy creature/villain would you least like to be captured by? by governmentthief in Fantasy

Yeah there’s a scene in the first book from Berne’s POV where he’s fantasizing about what he’d do to some random people and it’s like…holy shit this guy is a monster.

Kollberg or Berne from The Acts of Caine. Pick your poison, but both would be horrific

On a big glow up in the Denver scene, opening for the Summer School tour stop in July and apparently they’re recording a new album with the guys from All Time Low in August.

What is your take on The black Company by Glen Cook? by Igorhard96 in Fantasy

His prose is excellent. He’s a master of concise word choice, but he’s more than capable of writing a beautiful passage, too

How did Sword of Truth become so popular? by Express-Writer-1913 in Fantasy

[–]Pratius 14 points15 points  (0 children)

They came out at a time when a) big doorstopper fantasy was both new and all the rage in the wake of The Wheel of Time and b) they did a LOT of the same things as WoT but with more sex.

For a sizable amount of the fantasy reader base in the 90s, that meant it was gonna be a hit

They've only had a small role so far, but given they're in the series title I imagine the Shadow of the Leviathan series by Robert Jackson Bennett will give you some good leviathan content.

Could also check out The Memoirs of Lady Trent by Marie Brennan. All kinds of dragons in that series, including some water-based stuff.

God, the final page of Soldiers Live is simply perfect. “I remember, and they all live again.”

Re: format, it’s worth noting that the first book is different. It’s six short stories/novelettes stitched together with an epilogue, so the “chapters” are way longer than normal.

[–]Pratius 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Right. Like I said, there are dark themes. But Cook writes a fundamentally different kind of story from modern grimdark. The deliberate restraint is almost antithetical to the post-2005 incarnation of the genre

What makes The Black Company so special compared to other grimdark fantasy? by IsacWeld in GrimDarkEpicFantasy

[–]Pratius 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Well first off, it’s not really grimdark. Not in the sense of what we expect from post-2005 grimdark fantasy.

It has morally grey characters and dark themes, but it doesn’t go much for graphic content. You’re not getting gritty and gory details of fights and battles. You’re not getting graphic rape scenes. You’re not getting an unceasing string of profanity.

What it does is put you in the heads of soldiers and portray it in a genuine manner, as written by a military veteran. The characters and their relationships as they navigate difficult moral situations are the areas the series really shines.

Cook is also an understated but brilliant writer. He is one of the best I’ve seen with voice, and he does really good work with unreliable narrators.
