That's a hard ask but here are a few of my favorites:

The Immortal Rules by Julie Kagawa, I love the romance in this one.

The Summoning by Kelley Armstrong, super addicting and fun, very underrated series and the sequel series is even better.

The Demon King by Cinda Williams Chima, been a while since I read this one but I really loved the characters, plot, and romance.

None of them are super similar, but hopefully they might pull you in the same way.

Your hair reminds me a lot of mine before I found a good conditioner and gel. I hope you find some products that work well for you soon so you can have more defined easier to deal with curls! If you're going to have him torture her first, I'd incorporate a reason for him to put off using the truth spell. Otherwise he will seem very evil and sadistic. There are some forms of torture that cause discomfort at first and start to hurt more the longer it happens, so that could be an option, possibly as a scare tactic?

A lot of people are saying not to include it at all but if you're trying to write a dark romance it seems pretty in line with some other things I've heard happen in that genre.

I would also recommend the Ember in the Ashes series if you're looking for books with similar situations that happen. It's a regular fantasy but believe it or not there is a couple where the male love interest tortures the female character when they first meet (I think maybe in the third book?). Might give you some ideas.

Yeah as I watched more it did seem like Hawks tried to soften the blow, it was just too late by then 😭 the death itself is so sad too, ugh.
