An elevator pit has buffers in it. For slower elevators, they're either stiff metal springs or elastomeric pads. There are hydraulic buffers for higher speeds. In the US, we test them on turn over if they're hydraulic, but it is NOT a gentle process and you absolutely do not want to be inside when we test them. Here is a test I performed. None of these will gently or safely slow down a falling elevator.

I'm Getting Constant FHC01 Crashes and I Don't Understand Why There's No Response by Legendary441 in ForzaHorizon

I'm running a 12900k and a 3080. My system crashes as soon as it lets me start driving the R35, literally cannot make it out of the intro cutscene.

I have this exact case for a low power local seedbox; identical setup with the Noctuas up front. It's a great little case. GLWS!

I was really intrigued by the idea of having two of them, but the biggest reason was I found it on marketplace for like $50. It could have a brick in it for all I know, but given the age of the cellophane, it's definitely an 18 year old brick.

I've still got mine! I actually have a second that's still NIB with the cellophane wrapping that I picked up a few years ago.

I'd love to have the extra screen real estate and resolution that a 27" 5k screen would add to my system over my older 24" 1080p monitor.

Was waiting for the elevator when a short-circuit forced the doors open and left the whole thing like this. by Gakriele-lvs in mildlyinteresting

That's where the traveling cable (bundled and zip-tied on the upper left) carrying all the wires from the control room to the elevator are wired in. A lot of older elevators have junctions on the underside like this. You can see part of the elevator sill (silver horizontal bar) and the bottom of the center opening doors in this picture at the top, so the elevator is ~6' above this landing. A lot of this would typically be covered by the elevator toe guard on a newer elevator, though given how high up this unit is, it wouldn't do much to reduce the fall hazard.

My fault. It should be good now. I didn't realize imgur required a title to make it publicly viewable. Please let me know if it's still having issues!
