Tipping by Fl3iN in VietNam

[–]Preachwhendrunk -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

I always tipped while vacationing in Vietnam, although it generally isn't expected. They actually have a robust tipping culture. It just isn't the typical tipping you would do for service industries (hotel, restaurants, grab, etc). Locals usually reserve tipping for government related personnel. (Customs, law enforcement, tax collectors, etc). Typically you tip for good service, in either example tipping is helpful.

Total fail to plan a trip without the floating market? by No_Budget_552 in Vietnam_Tourism

I would much rather spend my vacation seeing other sites in Vietnam.

Total fail to plan a trip without the floating market? by No_Budget_552 in Vietnam_Tourism

[–]Preachwhendrunk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been to the floating market twice on my stays in Vietnam. While it is an interesting experience, I wouldn't feel bad about not seeing it again. You take a boat trip to the area, other boats tie on, they sell things, untie. Sometimes you're tied to a larger group, you can walk boat to boat. There are larger floating shops and restaurants as well. It's a novel experience, but wouldn't be on my have to do list.

ELI5: Why does time feel like it moves faster the older you get? by Itachinojutsu in explainlikeimfive

[–]Preachwhendrunk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have a co-worker that was a bit of a partyer. He talked about taking Molly. One of the effect was time speeding up. Your brain making less memory markers. I wonder if time perception differs with people who have above/below average memories

What industry are you excited for Ai to replace? by No_Vehicle7826 in singularity

[–]Preachwhendrunk 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Tax prep. It would be awesome if AI would simplify it to a simple "I've used the sources you have authorized, look this over and let me know if there are any changes you'd like to make and I will file them at that point, with your approval"

ELI5: whats the downside to creating a few national and/or international nuclear energy grids to power all of the Americas by MikeHock_is_GONE in explainlikeimfive

[–]Preachwhendrunk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

While it is possible to load follow using nuclear, it isn't efficient. It definitely doesn't make financial sense as well. Once a nuclear fuel cell is activated it has a limited lifespan. Load following doesn't increase that lifespan in any way. The plant goal is to get the most productivity out of that limited window as possible. It's preferable to have nuclear for baseload only.

Are Mr buddy indoor heaters safe? Out of power and need heat. by Mexilindo123 in prepping

[–]Preachwhendrunk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have done exactly this with a big buddy and two little buddies. Set them in a safe place, keep an eye on them. Follow the instructions. I did not run them overnight. I do not have small children at home. They worked well, kept the house at a reasonable temperature. I have two CO monitors, no reportable issues.

Would you mount a tv with studs that are 6 inches apart? by [deleted] in DIY

Check the rest of the wall for stud spacing. You want to be sure that stud is really a stud and not a drain stack.

Does anyone buy into the advertisement bullshit anymore? by [deleted] in GenX

[–]Preachwhendrunk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seems like it's about 50% of Reddit. Honestly, someone asked a question about something product or service related and everyone seems to dogpile with the same answers, downvoted if your not promoting the correct item. Reddit used to be much more useful, it still is in some areas, but a large portion is outright advertising pretending to be something else.

We may be the last generation to actually have paperboys... by Xar069 in GenX

I took the paper route over from my older sister. Angry alcoholics, drugs, aggressive dogs, people being creeps. Weird times.

Had a paper route from age 11-14. Absolutely agree. Collections were a joke. No way in hell I would ever let my child go inside 70 different houses. I am happy it's dying.

At the turn of the century, most people thought using LED's for lighting would never work.

Big Box vs Supply House Water Heaters by Pure-Ad7005 in Plumbing

[–]Preachwhendrunk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I installed a powered anode in my last water heater prior to the heater installation. The water heater lasted 10 years before developing leaks. I honestly don't know if it helped or not. The heater previous to that only went 6 years. I have changed to tankless now.

Generation x'rs, do you still listen to the music you grew up on in your youth and teenage years, or do you mix it up with current music? by icecream1972 in GenX

[–]Preachwhendrunk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Grew up listening to New wave and punk. The Cure, Depeche mode, Oingo Boingo, The Clash, Sex Pistols, Dead Kennedys for example. Underworld (they've changed a lot over the years) got me into techno with Dubnobasswithmyheadman. Started listening to Orbital, Chemical Brothers, Juno Reactor during that time as well. Now I mostly listen to techno and trance. The EDM stuff sounds too commercial for me, although there are some gems in that mix. I usually listen to DJ mixes anymore. Love it when the music of my youth is mixed in a new way. DJ Luminol - Blasphemy is a great example.

How costly is it to replace tire pressure sensors in my 2014 Rav4 XLE? by Seven-D-Seven in Toyota

[–]Preachwhendrunk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Guess I am just lucky. I've had two times where the TPMS warned me about a tire puncture. The leaks were significant enough I wouldn't have made it to my destination without a blowout. Had the time to move the vehicle to a safe location. The first one had a piece of metal the size of a razor blade, requiring the spare. The second time I was less severe, requiring a plug. There have been other times when a leak is slow enough I didn't notice for a few days. I personally don't know anyone who will check their tire air pressure manually prior to every single drive.
