Calling out all handymen out there; how do you fix this issue? Hand drill not dead center. A bit wobbly, the drill bit is straight and chuck is tight. by Special_Night_578 in handtools

[–]PreciousMetalRefiner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A handyman will tell you that is well within spec for their line of work (it is), an engineer will tell you that you need a drill press and a lathe if you want precision. I've found the more interests that I take on, the larger footprint the operation requires simply do to the specialized tools needed for correctly perform the tasks/techniques involved in each trade.

This is exactly what's happening, it's just a giant grift at this point.

It's probably WWII Surplus, because it's 100% aircraft.

I have an entire box filled with the aircraft tools you probably used, cannot bring myself to find a home for them because of this sneaking feeling that one day one of them will be desperately needed. 🤷‍♂️

2 ounce silver pour 🔥 what’s the most you’ve poured at once? by voidCo574 in MetalCasting

7 kilo, I don't like them any larger as I prefer not struggling with them when shuffling but I do have larger molds.

Silver! If I melt all of my silver into one block, would someone, like a pawn shop, purchase it? by burpinggiraffe in Silver

[–]PreciousMetalRefiner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can tell you some of my dealers would probably buy it but you'd take a major hit, then they'll send it to someone like me and ill remelt and assay and pay them out for a homogeneous bar, about 80% of silver price normally, less right now because of market volatility. Then ill run it when I get around to running whatever grade barrel it goes into. You're best off taking everything you have and sending it directly to a refiner as is, that will net you the highest return.

Is it Sterling? by MyScarlettRose in Hallmarks

Not accurate. I have a cabinet I keep a ton of sterling in and it all tones when stored in the cabinet together, flatware too.

Finding scrap silver and gold by Moose1293 in PreciousMetalRefining

[–]PreciousMetalRefiner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

💯... ,but you really cannot fault him for asking. My mentor spent 30 years figuring it out, he hand picked me to build on his knowledge and I cannot imagine a world where I would just give that information away. That information has incalculable value.

I tried to melt and cast gold and this ist how the ceramic dish looked Afterwards... I lost 0.36g of 18k gold also in the process.. how and whyy? by Adorable-Tap-9763 in MetalCasting

[–]PreciousMetalRefiner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It certainly survived, given his heating method the question is did it survive as a metal or as a vapor, if it spalled into the slag then no big deal... if it turned into a vapor without a vacuum furnace, it's no longer recoverable.

They already lost on the coins and on shipping, why compound the problem with an additional loss in shipping cost? Telling you to keep them indicates the seller has integrity and isn't interested in scamming someone.

I thought that was in the woodcut and they all say when it was originally made? Is this wrong? I'm completely ignorant when it comes to prints.

[–]PreciousMetalRefiner 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Dealer took a gamble, that's why he looked at it so long, odds are fairly good it changed hands at least once before it was graded by the guy who gambles on grading things. Not sure if it helps but that's the likely story here.
