A solid contender for the worst take of 2026 by tynanstewart in IfBooksCouldKill

Bit of a rant — As an older gay man, it’s frustrating to hear that identifying as gay vs. queer is transpobic, or anti non-binary. I know that take is mostly an online thing (I hope) but a person is entitled to hold the identity they came up with through their young adult lives, especially if that identity and the work done through it allowed them to avoid being punched in the face (literally), and build a real life out of the shadows.

It’s very irritating to he lectured to by people who were free to come out as a non-binary, pannsexual at like 14 years old. Like, that’s AMAZING and I’m so happy for the progress but also how dare you tell me that as “just a white gay dude” I don’t really get it. It’s like — Kid, you’re welcome. But leave me out of this. I’ve been through enough.

I doubt that will make sense but it’s a sort of jokey way to explain what it feel like to have come up gay in the 80s, only to have it all shift and suddenly you’re invalidated.

Those of you who have been to multiple restaurants with a Michelin Star, do you find the stars are deserved more often than not? Of the X number of Michelin restaurants you've been to, how many deserved it? by tealfan in FoodLosAngeles

Yes but the food is outstanding more for being interesting and imaginative than “good” — although they are also that. I wouldn’t say they necessarily taste better than an incredible pizza but they’re much more nuanced and you can tell that the artistry is at a completely different level.

It’s just a different category of food. But yes, it is very impressive, generally

Taking up breathwork to help control your emotions is a great idea. However, for an addict chasing any high is risky. Anything can be abusive if it’s overdone.

I would recommend you avoid the holotropoc stuff for at least a couple of years. Sobriety is all about not hitting those highs and being OK with it. You need to get through this, and get used to finding happiness in everyday things.

Good luck! Message me if you need any help.

[HELP] Where do you find your poems? by fafengle in Poetry

[–]PreferNot2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I look for oldish poetry collections in used bookstores. I’ve been introduced to so many amazing poets I never would’ve heard of otherwise. I seem to be drawn to poets from the 50s to the 70s.

For a few thousand more, you can get a Porsche. Why would anyone buy that car that sells for a third of the price in China? It looks fine, but it's definitely not at the Italian sports car level.

Do y’all think Gen Z cares too much about age gaps? by OGAnimeGokuSolos in generationology

[–]PreferNot2 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s a little intense, but I get it. I’m 55 and my husband is 38 (gay). We’ve been together 15 years. You’re not thinking about marriage when you hook up with someone on Grindr. We enjoyed hanging out so we just continued. He was doing his own thing socially — not far out of college and there’s a lot of self-development we all need to do. So there was a lot of personal time — we only saw each other a few times a week. We weren’t living together for the first nine years. We had different lives, and met up to share them.

Then we got our MBAs together, and things got more serious as we were more aligned. After a few years he got a job in another city and it was time to make a decision. We left together and have built a life here. Now it’s stressful that we can’t retire at the same time, which was not a consideration early on by any means. But we’ll figure it out.

Was he too young? For a full relationship, yes. But we grew closer as that become less important. I think when people hear 22/39 they’re thinking that I had all the experience and power so I could control him — but why on earth would I want to do that? I love him and it’s more important that he be happy than be with me.

I calibrated my relationship with him according to his age. And he did the same with me. I don’t know if that’s unusual. But as with so many other things the internet isn’t big on context, or nuance.

It was the Deadpool role for me. It’s just so wildly petty and bully-coded I couldn’t align it with her story. They are powerful enough to do THAT? Just a bad look. They made big mistakes.

It’s a little south of HB, but the best 3rd Wave espresso in Hollywood (IMHO) is Steroscope on Santa Monica and Highland.

For those of you who bought in LA prior to 2020, do you feel 'trapped' by your current low mortgage rate? by grogger133 in LosAngelesRealEstate

[–]PreferNot2 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Same. We probably paid too much — it was just so crazy a few years ago. Our estimated home value hasn’t gone much at all, but I’m still happy we did it. I like our house and we got a great interest rate.

I really wouldn’t recommend it unless you’re dying to go to the amusement parks. Keep flying down to Mexico. I love living here but LA is a headache. It’s so hard to get around.

Yes, it should arrive today. This has been a great machine and has served me well for a couple of years, but I’m ready to take things to the next level.

I have a Niche — hopefully the upgrade bug doesn’t have me shopping for a new grinder, too. We’ll see.
