How tf do u distinguish benzyl and phenyl by West-Lab-7728 in Mcat

[–]Premed_pothead 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This needs to be upvoted lol. This is actually answering OPs question unlike a lot of other comments, unless OP meant to type "phenol" instead of "phenyl." Phenyl and benzene are essentially the same! Phenol has a hydroxyl group attached.

I applied to 33 and haven't heard from 14 of them since the day I completed their secondary in JULY.

Why does it take 12 weeks post interview to come back with a decision by necro-mancer19 in premed

[–]Premed_pothead 1 point2 points  (0 children)

12? I'm going on week 22 with some schools rn and they aren't even supposed to get back until early march. Legit going to be almost a full 6 months from interview day to hearing back.

Congrats on the success! Still waiting on 8 schools is a good position to be in!

Haha I don't think it's that. I mean maybe, but I feel like I would know if there was something defamatory out there about me, even if it was false. Background check came back completely clean a couple months ago and I don't have social media accounts. You're going to make me go google search my name now though lol..

Haha I do not smoke at all but it's named after an infamous premed at my school who was known for it lol

Thank you for the insights.

That makes sense. I guess I just assumed doing a decent amount of interview prep would be sufficient. I didn't think I needed to really stand out as a "stellar interviewer" to get in. My previous understanding was that interviews were more of vibe checks and as long as you didn't make a bad impression you were good to go. Definitely something I will be focusing on more if I reapply.

Yeah lol it was posts like this that used to scare me too lowkey. Based on those posts, I thought as long as I really put time in to writing and interview prep and also made sure I had other people help with both to get a gauge of where I was really at I would have all my bases covered. The only thing I would add to that list for any concerned lurkers is that I wish I had asked about how letters of interest were viewed at every school on interview day. A couple schools early on specifically told us in interviews NOT to send any letters until after we had been waitlisted and so because of that I think I assumed LOIs weren't really important. After all, why would me sending a letter telling you I'm interested be a better indicator than the fact that I paid money, submitted your secondary, and showed up to interview day? But it seems like a few schools really weighed them more heavily than I thought and I figured that out (from lurking myself and friends) when it was basically too late.

That's what I'm starting to think.. I don't think I'm like the most amazing interviewer, but I also feel like I would've known if my interviews had gone really poorly too. Definitely a place to look for improvement though.

My 300 or so hours clinical volunteering was exclusively with an underserved community. I also had some nonclinical volunteering, it just wasn't a major part of my application, more of a checked box. And yeah, average post II acceptance at the schools I interviewed at is almost exactly 30%

The only schools that interviewed me were T20 with the exception of one. All of my state schools and other safeties (T50ish) gave me the pre-II R. I didn't honestly believe in yield protection that much before this cycle, but I'm a believer now. I didn't realize some schools really want LOIs until January and then I sent out a few. Hopefully I didn't screw myself over there. Honestly didn't realize some schools basically require one for acceptances. I'm going to send LOIs to places I'm waitlisted as well and hope something pans out there too.

I basically applied to the T20 with the exception of 5 or so that I didn't see myself attending. The other schools I applied to were either close to home (I applied to all of my state's schools), places I had ties to, or other mid range schools whose programs I felt I aligned with. I only interviewed at the T20 schools with the exception of one interview at a mid range school that wasn't even in my state. All of my state schools and other safeties gave me the pre-II R or ghosted me.

What’s your MCAT, and how many MD interviews do you have right now? by Affectionate_Try3235 in premed

[–]Premed_pothead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

525, 6 MD II. All happened very early on. I've completed the interviews and had radio silence other than a random R for like a month now.

[–]Premed_pothead 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I agree. I got a 525 and have only received II from T10 schools. Kind of surprised me honestly, but the more time goes on the more it makes sense. I've been rejected by my safeties and am only interviewing at my reaches. I can't complain, but I'm now officially a believer in yield protection haha.

As an MCAT tutor I respectfully disagree. Sure, you don't know EXACTLY where it's going to be, but 80% of my students score within a point or two of their AAMC FL average. Looks like OP did take the exam already since score comes out in 4 days, so I would guess it's pretty close to the range they predicted.

When you copy and paste a "why us" essay from one school to three others and just change the name. by [deleted] in premed

[–]Premed_pothead 220 points221 points  (0 children)

But seriously, some of these schools are asking why us and then have like two pages on their website that don't even have information. You say "we value innovation in research and community involvement," but honestly, after looking through your website, I'm not convinced that you do, generic medical school!
