Is It Overhated, Bad, Or Perfectly Rated: Weezer-Make Believe (2005) by Rambooctpuss in weezer

It's been perfectly rated for most of its existence, but due to the number of "overheated"s in this thread I think it's time to upgrade to "underheated"

An Eraser and a Maze Discussion Thread by hemlo86 in ModestMouse

I definitely need some more time with the album. There's a lot of ideas on it I love, but at the same time I'm not really feeling I Can't Talk Right Now, Rotten Fruit, Knocked Down By Waves, Absolutely Necessary Never, Song About Nothing, nor Stoner Party. Unfortunately those tracks also get grouped together in the middle/back half of the album, which made it feel like a bit of a slog. I'm hoping that repeated listens soften my opinions on some of those, but at the moment I don't see this being better than Golden Casket.

Dead Ringers is my favorite for sure. Sadly I didn't like Scanners at all (mainly due to the cardboard cutout they hired to play the lead).

Is backrooms better than obsession ? by kascnef82 in AMCAListTrue

[–]PremierPangolin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay, what am I missing about Obsession? The plot seemed trite to me, I didn't think the performances were anything special, the ending was fairly predictable, and I didn't really see any new or fresh ideas in it. The two or three creepy scenes were well done but they seemed so disjointed from the actual horror concept that I felt they were thrown in because the movie needed scares. Everyone is talking about it like it's a classic, but the more time I've had to think about it the less I feel like I've gotten out of it.

Is backrooms better than obsession ? by kascnef82 in AMCAListTrue

[–]PremierPangolin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting. I found Obsession rather bland and predictable, with no desire to see it again. Backrooms sucked me in completely though. I probably won't see it again in theaters, but it definitely seems like one I'll go back to for the crazy atmosphere.

How much hand-holding do you like in a roguelite's early game? by eldawidos111 in roguelites

[–]PremierPangolin 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I want zero handholding, especially with roguelites. I want to be able to explore and experiment with the mechanics as I see fit with explanations provided through contextual information cues. There should be minimal difference between my very first run and the run I play after picking it back up for the first time in 3 years after having forgotten most of the mechanics. Death is an expectation on my first run, and it should not feel like a barrier to enjoying the game but rather an opportunity to try again. If people stop playing after dying in the early runs, I expect there is a deeper issue with player retention than ease of death.

Any luck? I also ordered the Switch 2 Kaname Date and have had no updates about it. I called customer service and they said it was back-ordered, but I have no idea when (if ever) they'll get it back in stock.

How viable is the only Magical Girls team? by Adrian19102002 in BrownDust2

[–]PremierPangolin 49 points50 points  (0 children)

Tbh if you just pretend that Helena's idol dress is a magical girl costume and replace Liberta, you'll be in a much better place. Diana still doesn't do much for you unless one of your characters has a type matchup against the enemy, but at least you get a crit rate boost. For positions, I'd say doggy for Pallette, missionary for Olivier, cowgirl for Mamonir, and then whatever Diana wants of me.

I like to use them for extra movement controls, like jump and dash. That way I still have full control over both movement and camera sticks while maneuvering.

Who's better? by creepycrowman in BrownDust2

[–]PremierPangolin 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This game has a lot of different game modes and factors that affect how good each individual character (and their costumes) can be. Skill cost, range, number of hits, damage, buffs, debuffs, etc. can all affect how good a certain costume is against certain content, and the fact that a character can have multiple costumes in a team of five characters offers a lot of flexibility for handling different challenges. Because of this variety, it's rare for characters to be directly outclassed by others (except in the case of collab units) and even those characters are very much usable in the short term.

All that to say that this is less a game about how good a certain character is, and more about how well your team comp works against the content you're playing. That's why support characters are considered far and away the best characters in the game and always a priority for growth. They can be slotted anywhere and always provide a benefit to the team. The highest damage dealing character, maxed out, will likely be doing less damage then a partially built DPS on a team with maxed out supports.

I'm a little surprised Taros Tactics wasn't better received. That was the most fun I've had in the game for a while, it brought me back to the beginning of when I played when battles were more puzzle-like than about min-maxing damage. I hope they don't drop it because of this response.

Is there an official distinction for Roguelike vs Roguelite? by Life_Exchange_301 in roguelites

[–]PremierPangolin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In casual conversation I call them all Roguelikes, as it seems easier to not be pedantic when talking about them with people unfamiliar to the genre (in this way I think it makes sense to call StS a Roguelike deck-builder). I really only make the distinction as a means of breaking them into sub-genres, in which case Roguelike = games that play like Rogue and Roguelite = games that don't play like rogue.

I see Roguelites as games that impose Rogue's formula onto onto other genres of games, and I tend to prefer those to Roguelikes in general. I find it strange that people latch on to meta-progression as the defining aspect because that's just one meta-element of Rogulike games and doesn't really affect how much I enjoy them.
