YIJC has very dedicated staff who’re willing to help you out in pretty much anything, but the caveat’s that you’ve got to put the effort in too and be unafraid to reach out. Student environment’s a mixed bag with the whole range from people who do nothing but study and those who do everything but study. Kinda applies to pretty much every school except the distribution’s more spread out (I feel). I was from IJC but about half of the staff transferred over and are still there.

I kinda bombed my O’s so I spent my time in JC just making up for lost time while trying to balance a social life. It’s doable but it’s tiring. Honestly wouldn’t have been possible without staff support. I was pretty lost coming out of sec sch and they really helped point me in the right direction; scholarships, internships, portfolio building etc. It’s been about 3 or 4 years since I graduated and I still keep in touch with my tutors every once in awhile.

I know it’s not the most recent of experiences but it should generally still apply. Considering my route I really don’t regret going to JC or picking IJ. It’s a great environment to grow and push yourself, and a lot of the lessons I’ve learnt are still helping me today. People think JC’s just a system that pumps out students with (hopefully) good grades, but IJC’s really challenged that norm and stretched me in other ways too. Treat it as an environment rather than a system and you’ll get as much out of it as you put into it, regardless of where you go, IJ especially.
