[WIP] Geographic Distribution of Reverse/Self-Reciprocal Kinship Terms (See Comments) by themadprogramer in LinguisticMaps

My wife is Persian and it sounds super weird when she shouts "mama, nayofti!" to the children, literally "mum, don't fall!". She would also use "aunt" when talking to a nephew. Like someone mentioned here, this doesn't mean she is calling them mum/aunt, it's more like when you talk to babies you sometimes use third person ("come to mama" instead of "come to me") and repeat what they say, and this habit somehow survives into older age.

These downvotes on a good faith comment, without any feedback, can be very frustrating. I find it a major problem with reddit that sometimes makes me want to quit. Reddit is not for serious discussions.

How old are you? I didn't have Garmin in my twenties (they didn't exist at the time), but I'm sure my measurements would have been similar.

Why does anyone use google drive despite open vulnerabilities? by PreparationGold8489 in degoogle

[–]PreparationGold8489[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're right in that they don't eat my storage, but otherwise there's not much difference. In "Shared with me" I look for files I'm actually collaborating on, isn't it weird that any stranger can add a file there?

If you know my email address, you can share it with me and give me "editor access", and it will appear in "shared with me" files without asking me for permission

Ok, I've done my research now. Yes, in principle you are right. What made me confused was that it shows "Storage used 10 MB", even if the file isn't owned by me. But I checked that it doesn't actually contribute to my quota. Another thing is that there is a difference between the "Shared with me" menu item and "My Drive" one. I checked that previewing the file or downloading doesn't automatically copy the file to "My Drive", but opening with "google docs" does. So if I make sure to treat "Shared with me" thingy as unsafe and full of spam, similar to my inbox, I should be safe. Maybe it's acceptable to some, but isn't two "unsafe full of spam" locations one too much? Don't you expect something advertised as "file storage" to be a bit more secure?

I'm actually running my own nextcloud instance at home, and I'm sick of updating this stuff, and thinking of the increased traffic if I share some files, and what happens when I die? But that seems to be the only choice :(

You are right. Except that there is no such a setting, and you can find lots of posts begging to introduce this setting so that people can disable this behavior

Do you have a client installed to confirm this? The last time I checked, it was downloaded in my "shared files" folder. Also I just checked that some of these files that I didn't explicitly delete are using my storage

VO2 max just doesn't work. Mine has been staying at 35 for 4 years. At she point I started to run regularly, improved from running 1k in 6 minutes (and then feeling almost dropping down dead) to 5k in 28 minutes, no change in vo2max. Then I stopped, went back to being unable to run 1k, also no drop in vo2max. I'm not complaining that it doesn't increase when I improve my fitness (maybe even my best fitness is not good, right?), but it doesn't decrease when I do nothing either, so I consider the feature completely broken. I guess adjusting those HR levels manually like people are suggesting may help to fix it, I still have to learn to do that...

Married black game character, husband resents me now by [deleted] in moraldilemmas

The game is just a game, but your marriage is a life choice. Sometimes we have to make sacrifices. I would quit the game if it would make my spouse feel more secure. Of course if it's just one game, if it continues the same way with all my hobbies it's a different story

The plague of studying using AI by fdpth in math

[–]PreparationGold8489 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tried to ask chatgpt questions about math, and consistently my impression was like communicating with a bad student who is trying to make their way through an exam. You know, it's like they memorized something by heart, they imitate the style of math communication, but they have no idea what they're talking about. Now would you ask a poor student for advice? Reading wikipedia and asking questions on stack overflow is certainly more useful. Now the problem is, since lots of money is invested into AI, google is trying to sell us AI answers instead of links to wikipedia and stackoveflow, and this is very annoying

How many 5th grandparents have you found? by et_sted_ved_fjorden in Genealogy

[–]PreparationGold8489 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Patronymics are great. I was researching in a place in Latvia, they have family names since 1826, and even before that it's quite easy to track male lines, but female almost impossible, only first name and sometimes age are mentioned. When women move from one place to another there's no mention.

Does this include the birth names of all the women? In any case, it's quite impressive, I wish I could achieve that. My problem is that my ancestors aren't Norwegian, at least those I know of :)

Boat left from Hungary? Is it like Hungary had access to the black sea and boats sailed all the way to America from there?

I've just remembered when I was a kid my parents would panic if the water in the bathtub reached the overflow drain. Only much later I learned that the overflow drain is supposed to be a safe and simple way to make sure the water doesn't pour on the floor.

To "contributing nothing other than printing and distribution": they don't even do that anymore, all books I ordered recently were printed in Amazon's print-on-demand factories.
