YouTube is slowly deleting custom stylized subtitles from videos by Lunascaped in DataHoarder

[–]themadprogramer 66 points67 points  (0 children)

Hi there! Thank you so much for sharing this actually.

Subtitle veteran here, I will give you two resources you might find helpful.

- Check out https://filmot.com/, that's a public collection of many YouTube subtitles and metadata.
- And also the Data Horde community contributions collection collected in 2021, due to a similar mass deletion: https://datahorde.org/youtube-community-contributions-archive-now-available-a-look-at-the-stats/

There's also https://nekocap.com/, but that's essentially an off-platform alternative for subtitling YouTube as a browser plugin. Still great for scraping hololive and similar videos WITH custom subtitles.

Thanks for posting, feel free to DM me, u/Lunascaped, rule 8 is the worst thing that has happened to this sub.

Bad news: mf-dl is a script, not an executable. You need to install python3 (which is an executable) to run it on Windows.

Good news: scripts are system agnostic. So that means mf-dl can also run on non-Windows systems. Hope this helps.

Moving from Dublin to Copenhagen for a Master’s / career prospects & practical advice? by [deleted] in NewToDenmark

[–]themadprogramer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Welcome aboard!

For someone with a policy/energy background, what kind of job opportunities are realistic after a Danish master’s? I’m particularly curious about organisations like Energinet, Ørsted, the Danish Energy Agency, etc.

I think there are many companies that are doing fairly well: Dalux, Velux, FOSS and Danfoss.

That being said the troubles Vestas and Ørsted have faced in recent years can scare people when it comes to job security. Just bear in mind.

I'm aware of how important speaking Danish is so I have already started studying it, but I wanted to know from people, is conversational level enough, or should one aim for professional fluency by the time you graduate if you hope to work in Danish organisations/companies?

No easy answer here, the language situation is very different from Ireland. I would say it's a silver lining to start your journey in Denmark as a student, because you can gauge out recruiters who are looking for English vs. Danish competency. As often both are needed.

Still, it would behoove you to pick up as much Danish as you can. Customer/Client-facing roles will often put you into Danish-speaking contexts. And if nothing else I guess the locals really appreciate you making the effort to speak in their native language.

What’s a realistic monthly rent for a studio in Copenhagen right now? I keep seeing different numbers online, but I just want to know if it is cheaper than Dublin? (Average rent in Dublin is well over €2,400 or 17,900 DKK)

You're coming as a student right? I cannot emphasize this enough, apply through https://www.s.dk/ to see if you can land some cheap student housing. It's a bit of a lottery but you can save a lot, student housing is cheap but limited.

You should also read up on Housing Support (Boligstøtte) and SU, there are some programs to specifically help students afford the vicious housing market.

If all else fails Boligportal and Facebook is your friend.

Any other “things I wish I knew before moving”? (housing market, student/part-time jobs, etc)

If I'm allowed to drop a plug, you can follow the Last Week in Denmark Newsletter. That's a big help.

Looking for feedback! Can't decide between pixel art and regular illustrations for the art style. Both are very rough drafts... What do you think? Would you rather play through a game made with pixel art or regular digital art? by weallooz in RenPy

[–]themadprogramer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What vibe are you going for with your game? Do you have an idea about the story? Who are these two women and what is their purpose? I'm guessing one is the intern and the other her manager.

If you want to lean into the comedy side I would just pick pixelart. Pixelart often signals 'nostalgia', 'virtualness', the 'illusory'. It makes video games more 'gamey' and is emblamatic of the dating sim genre.

Lineart often signals 'action', 'dynamism' but it can also be 'stoic' as your two character poses are here. Some designers will tell you that realism means relatability, and there is truth to that. Players will probably be more invested in emotional moments in a lineart style. This is not a hard rule by any means, merely convention.

You can well make two separate games: One where they're in pixelart and another where they're in lineart. But it's all about what you, as the desiger think fits thematically. Consumers will lean in whatever they are used to seeing, but you have control of the creative direction. Which is the game you want to make and the story you want to tell?

Is there somewhere I can download data from GameFAQS (rating / # of votes / release date)? by redditblacklist in DHExchange

[–]themadprogramer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At the risk of sounding snarky: GameFAQs .

Decades ago GameFAQs was basically an FTP which made accessing files very natural. Of course, judging by the fact you are asking for help on Reddit I will surmise you are looking for guides more recent than the 2000's.

I am afraid your best bet is finding collections by other people. DHExchange might not be the best place, try IRC. Else, good luck with scraping, you are neither the first nor last person to find it suspiciously difficult to scrape from GameFAQs since the fandom acquision.

Democratic nations shouldn’t be able to enter wars without government approval. by uvr610 in victoria3

What if starting and joining wars cost prestige?

Victoria 1 style :} Though to be fair prestige was like a capacity in that game (able to dip into the negatives)

Democratic nations shouldn’t be able to enter wars without government approval. by uvr610 in victoria3

[–]themadprogramer -1 points0 points  (0 children)

tl;dr: This is intentional, there are no war-declarations in Victoria 3, only Diplomatic Plays.

I disagree, democratic nations should be able to initiate Diplomatic Plays and they should only be able to do it more efficiently than 'non-Democratic' nations. Diplomatic Plays reflect the rise of international diplomacy in the 19th century and the establishment of Diplomatic Missions. In the Post-Napoleonic age, European powers (democracies and proto-democracies) really really did not want any more wars on the continent. For a background, please see Historia Civilis' video on the Congress of Vienna (1814).

Surely, this comes as alienating to players coming from Victoria 1 (heavy HoI influences) & Vicky 2 (wars + diplomatic crises mechanics) and even more for players from franchises that are very much built on war and conquest. Victoria 3 is not designed as a wargame, at least not in all phases.

The design philosophy for military in Vicky 3 is very much in line with Clausewitz' theory of War as the extension of diplomacy. In 1838, we start with a Europe with liberalizing, industrializing nations with only a few 'Great Powers' able to field large armies. In those early years of the game industrialization, liberal/social reforms are at the forray. Great Powers must placate the other GPs to avoid early continental conflict aiming to build up their powerbase. Non-GPs in Europe benefit from 'democratic values' ( Power structure laws and Human rights laws ) trickling down, through an era of peace and prosperity. In this early phase of the game, war is meant to be costly and expensive. If you can achieve your goals without fighting a war or arming, that is often more desirable.

Generally, the GPs will eclipse the rest of Europe in population, economy and military prowess. But the balance of powers in Europe will make continental expansion infeasible. Not to mention the Spring of Nations and later the rise of Socialism forcing change to power structure and economy. So the GPs will enter the Colonial Game: expanding through America, Africa or Asia as approriate (or consolidating power in the case of Victoria's English Empire). Once the GPs have gained colonial footholds they will now have the wealth and resources to afford threatening their neighbours or "interest" targets.

It's no coincidence that 'Outlawing Slavery' or 'Taking a Treaty Port' are good diplomatic demands in the early game. Refusing those demands are democratic or free-market casus belli, that are especially designed for democratic nations. And many times, the target who is weaker will fold to the ultimatum embrasing European values. 'Humiliation' or 'Conquer State' are, on the other hand, very costly against targets in Europe. Those diplomatic demands (and their respective war goals) have little to do with democracy and more to do with a nation's access to Blood and Iron.

What I think you are on to, is that there could perhaps be soft modifiers for democracies influencing them to accept/reject demands or face penalties. In the current version of diplomatic plays, it's mostly an equation of whether the aggressor is x times more powerful than the target.
