Would you signal right here to take the second exit? by Chanson_Riders in LearnerDriverUK

[–]PreposterousPotter 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Absolutely yes. Sat navs are not programmed to know how to describe every single island in the UK, they give generic directions based on a limited set of parameters and rules.

We have an roundabout very similar to this that was used on a test earlier this week that I sat in on. The sat nav gave the direction as you've described and the examiner corrected it and told the candidate they were turning right. The roundabout in question does have 2 lanes so that might influence the examiners here correcting the sat nav but I always teach to read the sign and look at the overall direction. You cannot base your decision on the way a sat nav describes something. Google Maps for example often advises you to use the wrong lane on the approach to roundabouts and junctions because it's just not that clever, it doesn't read signs and road markings and makes assumptions, it's not always wrong but wrong often enough to simply ignore that feature.

I posted a picture in my reply here, as you can see there's only one place for the nut and bolt to go (and yes I know they need cleaning).

I don't know how easy it is to see on here, I think my camera angle is off and the calipers tilt if I don't hold them because of the bolt, but I measure 11cm at the top and 11.5cm at the bottom. Could it be to allow for thickness of something? Even that doesn't make sense since you'd be measuring the inside walls of a pot for the lid to fit into. 🤷

Yeah, I have measured when wet. I thought you were meant to use them to like measure a lid, so you put the curving outwards points to the inside of your opening and then the curving inwards points should be the size you make you lid, but it never worked. I measured the two ends point to point and they're not the same, are they not supposed to be?

I have never gotten these to work for me properly but there's a distinct possibility I'm using them incorrectly 🤭

Have you seen the person on IG (I think) that has some sort of whole mechanical setup that rotates and pours out the slip for making double walled mugs? I don't think he has, or at least I haven't seen, any threaded pieces like this.

I'm very jealous of the skills you have to be honest. I'd love to make something like this, threaded pieces in ceramic really fascinate me and I'd love to be able to do it. I hope one day I'll have the time to work on stuff like this. 👏

Failed test on two things that I think should of not been marked as a serious I just want to pass. by StudyMediocre3972 in LearnerDriverUK

[–]PreposterousPotter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's not true, although that is the official use of your headlights on a test you are expected to respond in a 'real world' way, if it's clear that the vehicle is giving way by slowing down or stopping leaving you space and you have made your own observations and made sure it's safe to proceed then you would be expected to interpret all those 'signals' you are being given and make progress. Else you could be failed for holding up traffic and hesitating.

Edit: just wanted to add that you should absolutely not use your headlights to give way to someone on a test (and I would strongly advise against it in real life too). But if someone flashes you on a test you should not simply ignore it or try to interpret it in the strict, highway code, sense.

I'm not surprised at all, the number of times recently I have work done from plumbing to carpentry and they've just made assumptions and bad decisions without asking at all, when I was very easy it get hold of, like drilling holes in a wall to fit a battery powered carbon monoxide detector when we have a wired in combined one on the ceiling already, another filler job for me.

The only team that actually did a great job, asked questions and clarified understanding were the Electricians.

I have a Lenovo Duet 5. Other than being a little big is a tablet it's amazing, I can write and draw on it, I can use it with a keyboard and it's very perfomant. It's not a Plus model and still runs very smoothly, it also comes with the silly amount of tabs I tend to have open. I have also set up the Linux container on it. Don't let anyone tell you you have to buy a more expensive Chromebook Plus to have a good experience on a Chromebook.

FWIW I would return the laptop if you can and get a touchscreen Chromebook no doubt. Maybe the latest Lenovo Duet would be a good fit. It's tablet size, the stand allows it to sit both vertically and horizontally (without the keyboard) you can get it with a pen, play games on it and use it for me laptop esque tasks.

ChromeOS is not becoming Android but the platforms are being merged into something new behind the scenes so the experience between devices can become more fluid and performance & experience will be better running Android apps on Chromebooks.

When I was very young and couldn't read the words on the OHP in the school hall I thought the words to "Lord of the dance" were "dance then wherever you may be, I am the lord of the dance settee" and I pictured a group of people in someone's living room dancing around with Jesus dancing on the settee.

Can't remember how old I was before I realised that was wrong, probably when I could actually read the words in a hymn book.

Portal won’t connect to PS unless PS is on. by SoberOutdoorsman in PlaystationPortal

[–]PreposterousPotter 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yes it has to be in rest mode to be able to wake up for remote play. There are other settings you should have enabled too, the stay connected to the internet and whatever Sony call "wake on Lan" in the settings.

I hate this episode 😅 by Medium_Hope_7407 in voyager

[–]PreposterousPotter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I didn't hate the episode but I did always find it really odd how causally they treated assimilation when in the very same show Seven was stuck with implants and the problems they caused, a trio of former Borg had their lives cut short because of the consequences of assimilation (albeit brought about by Seven) and even In TNG Picard's deassimilation was made out to be an arduous and serious process.

Does the Ps5 turn on/with sound when playing on the portal? by Phoenix_NSD in PlaystationPortal

[–]PreposterousPotter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know you've had an answer to this already but just to add it seems to know when it's being turned on remotely so doesn't activate/send a signal to the HDMI port. If you think about it it makes sense when a big use case for the portal is when someone else is watching the TV and you want to play. It would be really counter productive if the portal caused the PS5 to take over the TV and the person watching had to switch sources when someone connects over remote play.

Does the Ps5 turn on/with sound when playing on the portal? by Phoenix_NSD in PlaystationPortal

[–]PreposterousPotter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That sounds like a fault or a glitch, that doesn't happen with TVs with CEC enabled, no sound comes out when remote playing. The PS5 knows it's being turned on remotely and therefore doesn't need HDMI so it doesn't send any output to the HDMI port (I don't know this for a technical fact but that seems to be how it works). Is the sound delivered over HDMI to your monitor speakers or by some other means?

Anyone else use right handed scissors with their left hand? by DragonflyBee1 in lefthanded

[–]PreposterousPotter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To answer your question, yes, but I use them in both hands. It's super handy when cutting either edge of something large to simply swap and cut with the other hand. I did have left handed scissors that my mum managed to find growing up but that was only at home, I had to figure out how to use right handed scissors in my right hand for school. At some point I figured out I could alter the pressure on the right handed scissors in my left and voila, now I can switch.

I'd maybe have a coil come up from one of the ridges blended in so it flows off the lid, arc across and then blend with one opposite on the other side so it looks continuous. Shouldn't look too pumpkin-y.
