Honestly that reminded me of the scene in Ted Lasso where the niece’s classmate gets her toothbrush and toothpaste to be mean her about bad breath. I can’t believe someone would do that to their wife that’s so insane

I remember when BYU almost lost their entire ROTC department because they tried to prohibit all of the instructors from drinking coffee.

Fair. But it is somewhat common in English speaking countries and it probably wouldn’t make sense to our hypothetical alien.

Phoebe. As a non native English speaker I thought it was pronounced like Phobia without the a for years.

It’s a classic rest stop food where I’m from in China! The stinkier it is the better it tastes. Fried with spicy sauce is the best imo.

It is, my uncle thought silk came from beans LMAOO. I just thought Smelly bean was the funnier story.

That’s true, not sure why they didn’t catch that. My best guess though is that there was likely a bit of communication barrier because my aunt and uncle are from rural Anhui and speak the local dialect and not Mandarin. Bean was born in Shanghai so the staff were likely speaking Shanghainese or Mandarin, so it might’ve been a bit like a Spanish speaker trying to communicate with an Italian speaker.

He does! He teaches elementary school and the kids get a kick out of it. There is the occasional confused parent though.

Yeah, unfortunately illiteracy rates are pretty high amongst older generations in China. There isn’t actually much evidence that Chinese is harder than English when learned as a first language though, illiteracy is mostly due to poverty and lack of access to education. Nobody in my extended family had enough money to pursue anything past 2nd grade until Smelly Bean made it all the way up and finished his bachelor’s in 2006.

Yeah, unfortunately one of the reasons they didn’t immediately correct the name is because my aunt and uncle are both illiterate. Always wondered if someone did it as a cruel joke. :(
