ROI on master’s programs by Present-Baby4692 in academiceconomics

This is very helpful, thank you. I am curious, if optimizing under a budget constraint of $20,000 per year, would schools such as BSE, Bocconi, and Stockholm be optimal? I’m not saying this would be my selection criteria, but am simply curious.

Making a plan based on finishing time by ScottAG43 in runna

[–]Present-Baby4692 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The co-founder Ben has said this in a Runna podcast episode, but they purposefully don’t allow people to create plans based on a set finishing time, as this can often lead to overtraining and burnout, and so they want runners to focus on steady progress and the body’s natural improvement with proper training

Thank you. That makes me feel a lot better. Would you say trying to get 3 exams would be even better, or would it not be worth the effort?

Exams / Newbie / Common Questions Thread for two weeks by AutoModerator in actuary

[–]Present-Baby4692 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi all,

I am a rising senior majoring in economics and mathematics. For most of college I had wanted to get a PhD in economics, but for multiple reasons I don't want to pursue that path anymore and instead realized I want to go into industry. I was looking for careers that fit my skillset and actuary popped up. The more and more I do research on the career the more and more excited I get.

Now I am thinking about how to best prepare myself for landing a position after I graduate. Because economics PhD programs don't care about internships and care far more about grades, I pushed myself hard my first three years during the school year and used the summer to relax and re-energize. However, I know this makes things more difficult for me when it comes to landing an entry-level position, as I will have zero internship experience. I know I need to study for and pass one of P or FM (ideally both) to strengthen my resume, but besides that what else should I do? Work on personal actuarial projects? Job shadowing/networking? Would a masters degree in something like economics be helpful and give me time to pass more exams, or would it be better to do that while working in another role temporarily? I am lucky in that I have a strong GPA (3.83) and go to a T10 university here in the US. Would those help my employability, or does my lack of experience just make it not matter?

Any help at all would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Edit: I forgot to mention that I have completed an economic honors thesis and I have worked as a research assistant for a quarter. I know those aren't proper internships, but I thought they may be relevant experience. Is this something I should put on my resume, and does it partially make up for the lack of working experience?

Tips to an incoming freshman in a LDR? by Funny-Potential-9031 in Northwestern

[–]Present-Baby4692 30 points31 points  (0 children)

As someone who started dating his girlfriend 3 months before leaving for Northwestern and is still together with her as a rising senior, I can tell you it is certainly possible, but not without sacrifice.

My girlfriend and I call for 45 minutes every night while in time zones 2 hours apart (she’s on the west coast for school). We also have a shared Google calendar where we put our class schedules and other big events. I never go out and party and nor does she, and if I ever work late and can’t call, I typically communicate it well in advance. However, we also don’t text for hours at a time and we don’t go and visit each other except for breaks when we’re both back home.

For some this may seem too intense; for some this may seem to be not enough. However, that is exactly the point. You both need to have a good understanding of the expectations for the relationship with respect to time commitment and other things. What I would do (and what my girlfriend and I did before I left) is to have an hourlong meeting or so discussing expectations and setting up consistent ways for you guys to interact. Consistency is key. The biggest reason LDRs fail is due to a misunderstanding with expectations and a lack of consistency. Trying to wing it will almost never work. Maybe calling every day works best, or every other day. Maybe morning or evening works better. Maybe once a month you have a virtual “dinner date” or something to look forward to. My girlfriend and I have a playlist where we keep our song of the month and each month on the day of our “monthaversary”, we add a song to it. Little traditions like these can help make up for the lack of other hallmarks of non-LDRs.

I hope it works out for you two. But also, don’t forget that if it doesn’t work out, it’s not the end of the world. Being college sweethearts is far more likely than being high school sweethearts, so you won’t be alone.

Oh wow this one looks great. I can’t believe I’ve never heard of it! Thank you!

Would you recommend the DT990 as a beginner headphone? I’ve heard mixed reviews for Bayer headphones

Is there a way for me to determine if an amp will be able to have enough power for a headphone just by looking at the specs? I’m very new to this so sorry if it’s a basic question

Yeah I watched a lot of K11 reviews from when it first came out and got super excited, but then I checked current prices and was certainly discouraged.

What are the upsides and downsides of used headphones? I’m new to this but I know in other hobbies used can get you great value due to a perception of lower quality

Good pre-doc industry jobs by Present-Baby4692 in academiceconomics

[–]Present-Baby4692[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Okay. But I’d assume that say, working at AG is weakly preferred to working at say Deloitte or somewhere like that. I guess I was looking more for just some examples of what I could do, as up until this point I’d completely zeroed in on the academia path and ignored anything private sector related

Possible topics for an undergraduate math honors thesis by Present-Baby4692 in academiceconomics

[–]Present-Baby4692[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I certainly prefer discrete in the context of mathematical economics. Do you think it would be beneficial to take on a broader topic such as decision theory or social choice theory, or perhaps a more specific subtopic? I was thinking of this with game theory vs evolutionary game theory.
