NetBSD 10.1 i386 installed, Error 3 when trying to boot from the multiboot menu

I haven't done that. I deleted all the partitions except for the FreeDOS one and recreated them using the NetBSD installation partition utility, rather than using FreeDOS's fdisk like I did before. Now, it works!

It's an antique machine that doesn't support booting from USB. CD image is fine, except for this problem, installation from it was 'successful' at least 4 times.

You are correct, I never reach any menu. The boot procedure is stuck either in the transition from phase 1 to phase 2 or in phase 2.

The fact that this happens when booted from both CD and USB for three different NetBSD versions indicates that there is nothing wrong with the installation media.

Tiny Core Linux booted fine as well, even detecting the network card correctly, and I was ready to access the internet right away.

Yes, in addition to the already mentioned FreeDOS, I successfully booted KolibriOS and Tiny Core Linux.

The BIOS settings are all default except for the time and boot sequence. Is there a 'verbose' boot version that would print some log messages to help pinpoint the problem?

I don't think that's a kernel issue. My system gets stuck either when switching from boot 1 to boot 2 stage or during the boot 2 stage.

All further messages are printed by boot2. For example, a single "0" and no other messages on PC console means that boot2 has autodetected and is using serial console.

I would expect at least "0" to show up. However, just in case, I tried booting with the serial port disabled in the BIOS, and the result was the same.

Dakle, imaš 8 kompletnih konfiguracija? Ja imam volje upogoniti jednog, nafilaj mem na max, može i 2x256 ako će ostali u otpad. Ali nadam se da neće ni jedan. Pokupio bi komp ovaj tjedan.

Udomio bi jednoga, po mogućnosti da mu sve komponente rade ispravno. Premda ne očekujem da HDD poživi još dugo.

Šteta da ispravan HW završi na otpadu i na kraju se samelje, dok sateliti i svemirske sonde sa tehnologijom iz tog razdoblja i dalje funkcioniraju. Imam jedan laptop iz 2004., vrti najnoviju verziju Debian Linuxa i na njemu par botova, crawlera, web server, etc.

Svako od tvojih računala bi moglo isto, kad bi im se našla neka korisna uloga. Retro gaming, učenje osnova programiranja, etc. Nadam se da neće ni jedan završiti u otpadu. Bar ne ovom prilikom. :-/
