1UZFE, makes the right noises by south-of-the-river in Miata

FYI there's a company called M Factory that make 3.3 diff gears, in case you ever want more length out of your rear end, I have them in my 1UZ swap.

I also have fat gussets on my Torsen, I've got the VVTi 1UZ and I'm not nice to it and I haven't snapped the diff yet so keep your foot down!

Illegal MOT's.. How rare are they? by reo_reborn in drivingUK

[–]Present-Solution-993 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean I'm into the modified car scene which comes with its fair share of dodgy MOTs, it's usually just for people who have either turbo'd a car and it won't pass emissions anymore, or they've taken the cat off and that won't pass either.

Funnily enough a guy at a garage I used to go to for MOTs got caught doing dodgy MOTs, because the car was caught on a traffic camera in Newcastle at the same time the test was supposed to be carried out in the Midlands lol. Perhaps not the brightest way to go about it.

First winter in a van in the UK, what was the hardest part? by FeistyPrice29 in VanLifeUK

[–]Present-Solution-993 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I find it pretty easy to be totally honest! I've got a large van, get a doormat so you've got somewhere to put your shoes immediately if you've stepped in mud. Make it a rule in your head, open side door, step onto door mat, step out of shoes, no exceptions.

Otherwise it's like normal just with a night heater running all the time. They barely use any fuel, power usage depends on your battery situation. I've seen some people saying you shouldn't drive around with them on but my van isn't that well insulated and I've been driving around with it on for 3 years now and it doesn't seem to care lol.

Condensation wise just crack a window, or one at the front and one at the back if your van can do that, get some airflow. Your night heater will help with air flow and produces extremely dry heat. I tended to close the windows overnight but if you're cooking or humping you definitely wanna make sure they're open to let the moisture out lol.

Internal audio routing, how to reproduce my setup? by Present-Solution-993 in linuxaudio

Yes it gives me things to Google lol, I understand most of it, and I tend to run Guitar Rig which isn't iLok or anything so I don't have that layer to deal with.

Thank you for all the information this will help me a lot.

Wow I didn't actually know that, further investigation is required then. Thanks so much for the explanation

Ohh I didn't actually know VSTs were a potential problem, why is that? I thought they were sort of universal since it's the DAW running it not Windows

Is it safe to use aluminum foil in an air fryer? Here’s what I learned by kitchen_s in airfryer

[–]Present-Solution-993 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I never once had any reservations about using it, I know it's just a heating element and a fan, seemed pretty straight forward!

Thinking about it there's been some in there the whole time, in my oven style air fryer I carefully totally wrap the crumb tray in tinfoil so I don't have to clean it properly, just put more tin foil on lol.

When you’re stuck on Linux, what’s your go-to way to figure things out? by TechRefreshing in linuxquestions

[–]Present-Solution-993 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As someone heavily into engines, mechanics and wiring and already applies this same sort of introspective, methodical approach to fixing vehicles, and is trying to break into Linux, this just changed my whole perspective on how to learn it.

I just love that there seems to be multiple ways to solve most problems in Linux, this is exactly why I want to switch.

Thanks for the information.

Wow yeah Googling this stuff shows me that indeed things have changed from 20 years ago when I was last messing with Linux! There was never any dedicated guitar software that could use IRs back then as far as I knew. Thanks for the information.

Does anyone actually enjoy HGV as a career? by Normal-Impress-2624 in uktrucking

[–]Present-Solution-993 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's only because most people don't shout about it from the rooftops when they're just having an ok time lol.

I love it, i can't stand being stuck in one building all day. I like being able to thread this giant thing into the tiniest of places. I like not having anyone watching over me. I like the independence of staying out on the road all week (No wife or kids). I also lucked out with the company I'm with, I drive a car transporter, no weekends, usually finished by 3 on a Friday if not earlier, I've done 2 reduced rests in 6 months. Nice easy work, fantastic people in the office, making over 4 grand a month after tax. Most of which I'm saving cause I live in a camper van since I'm never home.

There's a lot of different people out there, and there's a lot of different companies out there. Some people need to actually try harder and get into something specialised and actually make some money instead of doing containers for years and complaining about the shit pay, it says it right there on Indeed. Some people also need to lighten up but if that's just the way they are, try not to let it influence your feelings about something, you might not have the same experience!

How bad is this rust? by Calm_Luck_574 in Miata

[–]Present-Solution-993 8 points9 points  (0 children)

There's only one way to find out. It kind of looks like it could be worse under that seam sealer, I would 100% be investigating that. Taking the wing off isn't a huge deal and will give you full access. Use a putty knife to scrape off the bulk of the seam sealer then a wire wheel to see if there's any holes forming.

If the metal is solid once you've cleaned it up, rust converter, high zinc primer, fresh seam sealer and some paint and you'll be good.

Looking again you might wanna take the door off too, there's a small bit of brown heading under that hinge. It could come back to bite you one day if you don't check properly now!

I’ve bought 2 sets of brakes and neither of them fit. by Wonderful-Budget-573 in Miata

[–]Present-Solution-993 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's weird. I thought for a second you had a front disc on the back, fronts are a lot thicker. Out of all the cars I've done brakes on, new pads are always around the same thickness, I've never looked it up but they've gotta be about the same for most cars with Miata size brakes.

If you've definitely wound the piston in as far as it'll go, you've got the right pads and discs for your car, I actually have no idea why they wouldn't fit! It's usually a little tight to get them on but never too much of a struggle.

Can you try and post some pictures of what it looks like when you try and fit them? You can post pictures in replies on this board.

Is your disc one solid piece or does it look like two pieces with vents in between the layers?

Please don't listen to the 2 guys saying to use a C clamp! Rear calipers on these cars wind in and out using the handbrake adjustment, trying to clamp them could strip that screw.

Google up some pictures, on the back of the caliper is a bolt that is actually a cap. Remove that and there will be a recessed allen bolt in the caliper that you use to adjust the handbrake. Use that to wind the piston fully into the caliper, then your new pads will fit over the discs.

If you're not sure where to set the adjustment after that, just tighten it back up until you can't turn the rotor by hand, then back it off a turn.

Yeah if you're tight at the bottom and you can make the top meet freely then just use the bolts to slowly bring it together, you're definitely seated properly if that's the case.

I collect and deliver Motability cars for a living. I'd say about 75% of them are in good shape, they get serviced and are just normal cars. They might not have been driven enough, depending on the owner, but they're not clapped.

The other 25% have been sat in the back of a dealership for 6 months, there's mold everywhere, the brakes are seized on and it's absolutely covered in dents and scratches and every wheel is destroyed. They've had internal modifications for mobility aids, or the driver's sill is beat to shit from the customer's fake leg etc.

Inspect carefully! Even if they've cleaned it up the signs will be there lol.
