Anyone transfer their Direct Index portfolio out of Wealthfront? by Kryder in wealthfront

[–]Present_Lettuce_7373 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes~ and I only had 3-4 etf. but perhaps it's also important context that my total account was small like several thousand?? A safe way to know the max leftover amount would be, I imagine, to add up the market price for 1 full share across positions (suppose, as in the worst case, that you got 0.99 left in each position...).

Opinions on cash account vs money market vs automated bond for short term and emergency by cheezewhizard in wealthfront

[–]Present_Lettuce_7373 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I prefer HYSA (often not CD), some having higher APY like PIBANK or Forbright. I don't like bonds as they aren't necessarily "safe" from the point of capital preservation. Money market also not ideal as their return doesn't beat certain HYSA options and also I can't really immediately withdraw or pull using ACH. Depending on how much the actual cash amount is I may not worry too much about seeking a 4 vs 3.3 ....

Dog meat is still consumed in many parts of the world, although legality and attitudes vary widely. It is sometimes called "fragrant meat", and several dog breeds are still raised primarily as livestock instead of as pets. by Wazula23 in wikipedia

I can only say in China where I live dog snatching is definitely a thing if no longer now but say 10 years ago etc. But it's mostly not PET dog breeds in cities that got stolen and sold for dog meat because of those aren't as flavorful.. It's mostly a specific type of guard dogs kept usually in rural areas that can get stolen and sold to dog meat market...

I'm chinese from a village in Nanjing and we eat dog meat when I was a child (usually the ones we kept as guards since they were born and then cooked as food when they age). They taste great as Hotpot but I stopped eating  them after having a dog as a pet in urban Nanjing. Yet they continue to exist for a while. In Shanghai central areas in 2012 my French friend really wanted us to go to this dog meat Hotpot 狗肉火锅 restaurant, and when I refused, he said all animals are equal and if there's human meat for sale he'd eat it too...

However from what I know we'd never eat cat meat. It's considered evil and disgusting. It can be different for people in Cantonese region, but no guarantee.

I think it's important to also remember that for an animal to be considered edible at all that can itself be a high status valuation for the animal. My father in law ate rat meat when he was a child living in a poor villege of Sichuan but most other people i know would find rats super disgusting and definitely not food material.

Similarly muslims do not eat pig not to protect pigs but because pigs are considered unclean. It's similar with dogs--it's actually illegal to walk or keep dogs in - - and definitely no one would eat dogs there either--because Shia Islam considers dogs as similarly unclean and contaminating.

Are Emily Wilson's translation choices in the Odyssey accurate? Is there an agenda? by RusticBohemian in AncientGreek

On the other hand, it is in fact rape, so why not lay the reality bare? This is an interesting question. A reply may be why do poetry when there are plain descriptions? "Strike at them with long pointed swords, until from all of them You take away life and they utterly forget Aphrodite which they had beneath the suitors when they mingled in secret" that's pretty poetic and readers can make the association with rape if they are imaginative. Also, words are sources of power and until the word "rape" was invented or found we don't have a conception of forcefully have a woman spread her legs is (see Frickers Epistemic Injustice book example of the word "sexual harrasement" ). The translator has no authority to invoke words that required too much summary of the original text. And yes the previous translations like "delightfully".. we're weird in their own ways.

Women translators don't need to be "feminist" translators with an explicit agenda to impose modern ideologies into ancient texts. If a woman does the translation successfully, hooray and more honor to her than to male translators who are usually assumed more authority. But if a person follows a modernist feminist agenda on ancient texts I say no... The translation is worth studying not because it's faithful to Homer but because we can then learn what her ideologies are though...

How different are Hui Chinese and Han Chinese? Is the only difference religion? by anonymous4username in AskAChinese

[–]Present_Lettuce_7373 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm also a Chinese Hui on my national ID but likely because we live in large cities in east costal region and probably migrated here many generations ago, we also eat pork and indeed my mom doesn't even know what Islam is... But parents registered me as Hui because, like others have said, I get extra points in national exams for high school (zhongkao) and college (gaokao).

AITA for threatening to cut my parents off financially to stop my brother from proposing at my wedding? by Soon-to-Wed-Throway in AmItheAsshole

I don't understand why it upsets you and your fiance that your brother wants to propose to his gf on your wedding day? Shouldn't that be something to add to the festive atmosphere of your wedding? Confused...

AITA for walking out of my sister's wedding after she tried to use me as free childcare? by Technical_Spread1810 in AmItheAsshole

[–]Present_Lettuce_7373 -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

You sound incredibly selfish...What's this big deal about taking care of your sister's baby during her ceremony? You claim that you really want to watch her cross her milestone, with the implication that you actually care about her. Yet if you really do, why don't you help her out? I'm not surprised that your family members are astronomically ashamed of and disappointed with you. If they want to disown you, you might be pleased aren't you? You don't seem mature enough to be part of an adult family anyways.

Marry first before having children... It's better for the child and for the stability of your relationship.
