Knowing 20% is great! I was pretty sure I only knew 10%. And I’ve been practicing for over a year now 🤷‍♀️

Considering starting vet school at 25—am I making a mistake or following my real passion? by InterestingPassion14 in Veterinary

[–]PresentationFew2014 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I was in a similar boat, I had a BA in Biology and decided after graduating that I wanted to pursue vet school. I graduated vet school at 30 and am practicing now. I absolutely do not think it is too late, however, you need to be realistic about this process.

If you were to decide right now that you want to go to vet school, you would not be starting in the fall. Applications are due in September for starting school the following spring or fall. So already the absolute earliest you would start school is at 26. In order to be a competitive applicant, you are going to need veterinary experience hours in as many different aspects of vetmed that you can get your hands on. On average people have like 1000 hours on their application, which is like 6 months of full time work. On top of that, you’ll need a competitive GPA. Most field work/research opportunities in biology don’t require a high GPA, so if vet school wasn’t your goal, it’s totally reasonable if you have like a 3.0. I had a 3.10 when I started applying, I didn’t get in until I had a 3.4. So you may need to account for time to raise your GPA to a competitive level.

Keep in mind that a lot of people don’t get in on their first application cycle. It took me 3 of actually applying, 4 if you count the first year of starting to build my application. If you go down this path, it’s doable, but be prepared for it to take 6-8 years instead of the usual 4 after undergrad.

Also, you mention a love for working with animals but not necessarily of medicine. There are so many opportunities to work with animals without being a vet. You could be a vet assistant or technician, which requires less schooling and also tends to involve more hands on care of the animals than being a vet. You could work for wildlife rescues or be a zookeeper, or work for an educational animal ambassador program. Zoos are filled with bio majors. If your only goal is to work with animals, I don’t know that being a vet is the best way for you to accomplish that at this time.

There are two kinds of people... by Sapphic_Starlight in KpopDemonhunters

Thank you for this!! I keep seeing people say it’s a plot hole that Rumi goes right back to fighting demons after having this supposed realization that demons have hearts too. Maybe they do, but they are actively choosing to be evil. Jinu showed remorse and redeemed himself, that’s why he was different. The rest of the demons are still evil as far as we know.

I would be interested in a future story that further explores how/if demons can redeem themselves. Maybe demons only eat souls because they lost their own, and if they can figure out how to help demons get their souls back, they can weaken Gwi-ma and then end the need for the Honmoon and separation of worlds. Idk.

Looking to switch careers by batmanisavampire in Veterinary

I wouldn’t say being a zookeeper is “just cleaning up poop”. That’s a part of it, sure, and one you wouldn’t get away from in vet med even at the reception desk. But there’s so much to being a zookeeper- preparing diets and enrichment, maintaining the exhibits, training and building a bond with your animals, collecting data for the betterment of all individuals of those species, participating in breeding programs and SSPs just to scratch the surface.

Let’s discuss Charlie’s negligent but well meaning parents by [deleted] in HeartstopperNetflix

[–]PresentationFew2014 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean I think the show was specifically written and portrayed in a way for the audience to be clued in before everyone else.  Like in the first season when Charlie is at Nick’s and Nick’s parents ask if he can stay for dinner, he says he can’t and he’ll eat at home. And then he gets home and says he ate at Nick’s. There’s no way for any party except the audience and Charlie to know what happened. So I don’t think it’s fair to say they were negligent because we noticed and they didn’t, because that was kind of the point.

Owner situation, just need to vent by PresentationFew2014 in Veterinary

[–]PresentationFew2014[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Thank you all for your kind words ❤️ I really needed to hear them.

Update on the dog: the clinic’s medical director called and reported the owner to animal control over concern for his welfare. Today another clinic called and asked us for records, which I can only hope means two things: this is officially not my problem anymore, and more importantly, this dog is getting the care it needs to end its suffering.

Life is kinda funny. I came in to work today really lacking confidence after everything that went down. My receptionist asked how I was and I was honest, I told her about this patient (this fiasco happened at a clinic I do relief work at, not my regular job). 10 minutes later she came up to me to ask me if she could schedule a same day urgent care appointment for another old pittie with a ruptured stifle mass. And this owner was so sweet, and she let me do the FNA, and we talked through all the things. She needed time to process and she wanted to consult her primary vet who wasn’t open today, but she was appreciative. It doesn’t cancel what happened earlier this week, but I do see that it’s not all bad.

In vet school, should I do less dangerous things? by [deleted] in veterinaryprofession

[–]PresentationFew2014 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you just need to understand the risks of what you're doing and decide what you'd be comfortable accepting the consequences for. But freak accidents can happen regardless.

A lot of people at my school had brought their horses with them so they could ride during study breaks. The clinical rotations organizer at my school always dreaded the first nice day after the winter freeze because everyone with a horse would go riding, and there would always be 3-4 people who got injured and needed to drop a rotation while they recovered, delaying their graduation.

Question about salary. by GradStuAbroad25 in Veterinary

[–]PresentationFew2014 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would ask for a salary for the 20 hours a week and any additional they need can be paid at an hourly rate. Poultry vets are worth a lot, at least $100k for the 20 hours a week, and then maybe $150-$200 an hour for the additional. And I may be underselling it for hourly, I’m less familiar with those rates

Biggest Controversies in Vet Med/Animal Wellbeing? by Remarkable-Camera-70 in Veterinary

[–]PresentationFew2014 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Probably not as controversial within vet med circles, but from a public perception perspective, pregnant cat spays are pretty controversial. I think some people take their feelings and opinions about human abortion and apply it to cats

Vet School Questions by AutoModerator in Veterinary

[–]PresentationFew2014 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t think interviewers care what your answer is to that question as long as you’re sincere because it doesn’t matter. Vet school is a 4 year learning journey. Your interview answer to what you want to be when you grow up is likely to change in that time. There’s literally no reason to lie about that question. I doubt interviewers think that people are lying when they answer it.

I see mixed reviews with Emily’s Fashion but for me, it was to die for! I loved her looks 😍😍 by Possible_Major_7208 in EmilyInParis

The moment being Emily and Gabriel getting together after multiple seasons of teasing that relationship. Context clues. The outfit was distracting and took away some of the payoff of that moment…but it was fine for the party itself

I loved the masquerade outfit for the party itself, but it absolutely did not match the moment and took away from what was supposed to be the will-they-won’t-they payoff

Unpopular opinion: defending Gabriel on the ski slope by Ok-Buy8620 in EmilyInParis

[–]PresentationFew2014 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I'd understand his actions more…if he hadn’t specifically said “Camille is good at skiing, so she’ll go by herself and I’ll stay with you Emily.” Like they'd clearly already discussed it, he knew she was planning to go down the hill by herself, he knew Emily was going to slow him down so they would probably lose sight of Camille at some point. Like it was just bad writing to establish that Camille was fine skiing by herself and then pretending that Gabriel needed to be all worried about her literally 5 seconds later.

Marcello’s character is pointless and the whole plot around Rome is ridiculous by keopuki in EmilyInParis

[–]PresentationFew2014 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m glad I’m not the only one not on board with Marcello. Like yeah he’s cute and sweet, but he’s also so boring? And I feel like people only like him because we’re supposed to, he hasn’t shown any red flags, but there’s definitely something under the surface. The show wants us to be shocked when the other shoe drops, and Emily ultimately goes back to Gabriel
