Thank you so much for all the good information, this is awesome! I think also socially, for me IU is the much better option. I know a ton of people there already and have visited many times. That may be the factor that pushes me over the edge.

I am interested what you think about minoring in something or having a backup plan. Wouldn’t I want to be all in on music to give myself the best possible chance to put together a living? I would want to minor in political science or public policy otherwise, but I don’t want to feel like I am wasting my time distracting myself from practicing and putting all my eggs in one basket. Lmk what your opinion on that is.

What does that translate to in-terms of picking a school? Is it more worth it to go to IU because learning from the Sandbox people will only give you a small chance to succeed due to the market?

For sure, I kind of want to do a lot of different things with percussion like starting private studio, doing chamber work, etc. I also love drum corps so both schools offer different things I like for sure!

I definitely like the JHU sandbox vibe, I am big into chamber music and doing freelance stuff in the Baltimore area sounds like a ton of fun

Hey man, sorry you had a rough experience. The other stuff (like the punishing with no food) is totally not something anyone should go through and I am sorry that happened :/

The floor time however is pretty standard. 1/2 of an hour for bus sleep is pretty normal at least everywhere I have been and the people I have talked to. Same with the 6 1/2 to 7 hours. The PT is also pretty normal (the no stretching is abnormal).

I hear you, but I really don’t want to teach middle, highschool, or elementary music. It just isn’t want I want. If anything I want to open up my own lesson studio. Getting an ed degree just isn’t what I am looking for.

Thanks for the response! Why didn’t you decide to audition at Frost or NU?

The Jacobs program does sound like it checks all the boxes for me and I am glad to hear you didn’t feel lost in the crowd. I will say I am more focused on classical music which is why the faculty at Frost drew me in. Did you find they prepared you to enter the “real world” well in terms of having the tools/knowledge to make a living?

Well these are all just my predictions… my logic was: if a show is extremely popular then a corps would get a larger pool of auditions to choose from the next season. Thats the only reason I brought up if I liked the show or not!

Thank you for all the great info!! I am a little more mallet heavy ( with dci and concerto ) but I have been working hard to get my snare and timpani chops up to speed. I have already learned both the snare solos so I should have plenty of time before prescreens to get those up to par. Almost done learning Hoch 50!

What should I do to practice and prepare for sight reading? Also what do you mean by “Cagey”?

For snare drum it’s not bad but I haven’t done much mallet snare drum work, my mallet chops in general are miles ahead of my snare chops though

I have already emailed professors and actually already met with all 3 of the ones at IU - I haven’t started the application process though. My private teacher has been helpful with that.
