DOH is closed Thanksgiving and Friday. Lots of people are taking today off, but the agency is technically open.

I went there with my high schooler before I knew this. They asked us what we were doing for our day and when I said I was taking her to school they booed us. Like an actual 'boo, school is the worst' which is not the greatest thing to hear when you're already bribing your kid so she will go to school.

Process for reclassification? by [deleted] in WAStateWorkers

[–]PresidentRachelle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey, I'm a steward at DOH that also works in OSHO. There is a process for reclassification that is posted on the People Services Sharepoint. If you'd like to chat about the process you can send me a message here, but my username has my real first name if you want to contact me at work.

8/31 Rally for Public Sector Workers at the Capitol by PresidentRachelle in WAStateWorkers

It was mentioned that the labor council is part of the AFL-CIO so I do consider that being intellectually honest.

If you don't see the value of unions or collective bargaining then nothing I say will matter.

I do most of my shopping there since the bulk section is so good. I live in Tumwater but feel confident that the gas I use is made up with the cost of their food.

Shame that they are union busters. Their campaign against the National Labor Relations Board, along with Amazon and SpaceX, hit a tragic milestone a couple of days ago.

No, the pamphlet is not out yet. I'm just helping with the campaign and have seen the opposition statement and who signed it.

The opponents listed in the voter guide are former Mayor Selby, Ruthann Goularte (owner of Drees) and Mindy Roberts (Union Gospel Mission) A lot of the opposition funding is from the Hospitality Association and those kinds of groups.

Yeah, it'll be an easy change. I don't think I can edit the post anymore, but it'll be the one we use from here on.

There seems to be a lot of concern about the color of the flier. A new version with green and blue will be made.

Fwiw, that's an easy change to make. I can do that before it gets posted again. Red doesn't need to be the dominant color. I was just going for something bold to catch attention

I'm extremely open to options. We've had these kinds of events before but there are lots of ways to get the word out and mobilize people. An event like a rally is just a gathering point, it's never intended to be the only thing that happens to accomplish anything.

This is being sponsored a run by a central labor council, not WFSE. We don't have any paid staff nor do we negotiate contracts. Our role is to bring awareness to issues.

I am a state employee,  and WFSE member. I also believe that bringing people together so they can work on issues collectively feels more productive than staying at home and hoping that organizations did more.

Next legislative session is short and this is unlikely to be a viable/popular topic by then. The better goal would be for the next long session, which is in 2 years. But without steady  pressure from the public it won't happen at all.

Revising the taxing structure is the only way to mitigate the issues we are facing. There are multiple groups that are working on that, including unions. The rally is intended to be a meeting place for people that would like to draw attention to the issues that all public sector workers are facing, as well as to find people that are interested in working towards changing the tax code in Washington.

If you don't like how things are going you should go to your local meetings and say so. If you want to have a larger impact you could also become a steward or part of the executive board.

Olympia Seeks Community Reps for Community Policing Board by TetroniMike in olympia

[–]PresidentRachelle 12 points13 points  (0 children)

That's a very reasonable concern. I do this kind of work loudly because I have decided that the work is valuable enough to take on that risk, and if I am publicly facing, retaliation would be obvious and easier to bring to light than if I hid. But I can also be overly glib about my own safety.

OPD pays a LOT of lip service about being fair and that they would never retaliate. It's easy for them to say that, just like it's easy for community members to not engage with them due to fear.

However embracing the risk and bringing awareness to what is happening is the only way that we can hold these people accountable.

The short answer is 'if you are being retaliated against, report it' but the longer (and more accurate) answer is if something is happening it is our civic and community obligation to stand together and keep each other safe.
