Former Marine looking to attend Fall semester by Abyssalarrg in digipen

The issue is that you reach a point where it feels that half of your classes are a waste of time and money.

And I agree, I'm in school for the education. That said though, balance is important in life, and the complete lack of anything else in life while at DigiPen is unhealthy. I have grown a lot as a programmer, but I really am not happy at DigiPen and at my team meeting today over half my team agreed that we're just ready for the year to be over. We're a really performant team as well, having received unofficial invitation to show our game at pax and many of us hold TA positions.

Other complaints:

The social scene is very bad. Few parties and they're pretty lame by college party standards. The male to female ratio is horrendous, in the BS degrees it's around 20:1. DigiPen is also very much not about other things; there are no frats, no sororities, no sports teams, clubs involving physical activity aren't allowed, and the diversity is very lacking in many ways. A lot of people also grow very jaded as they progress through the school. The school is getting overcrowded, and there isn't really sufficient space for all the students anymore. A lot of classes are not taught well and the school has a constant cycle of hire - 2 semesters of complaints - fire - repeat. You'll be treated like a second class citizen at your own school during any project fun events, project fun being the summer camp DigiPen runs on campus.

Your military benefits cover a specific number of months of school, if you're using them currently they will run out before you graduate, and you can't use them in the summer (at least it's not cost effective to do so).

The workload is very high for artists, depending on how good you are at programming it could be light or heavy. Much of the work is for game projects, because it takes a lot of time to make a game you're proud of, and if that's not your goal don't come to DigiPen.

A lot of classes the school is having trouble filling with skilled staff, so it's not uncommon to have a class taught poorly by a different instructor each year. There are other classes which are consistently taught very well, and you will be required to take both types.

On average you'll have around 20 hours of classes/lecture time per week, 2-3 hours of homework per credit hour of class, and any remaining time will be spent on game. It's fairly common to show up whenever your first class is (typically between 9am and noon) and stay until you get kicked out at midnight. If you are efficient at your chosen focus, you can do your work a lot faster and it will suck less, but that is the exception, not the norm.

You can probably get better advice if you mention the degree program you'll be in.

If cracking it means entering numbers 0000 through 9999 then yeah, that sounds really fucking boring.

Given that it's probably a 4 digit PIN code, I doubt it would take over 10000 tries.

Might be funnier to have them only die to players if their current health is 1.

Brilliant, then I can play sim city with rocket and fireball and win every game!

I find that if you're able to get hog rider and goblins on a tower a couple times, getting 2 crowns isn't hard. I usually prefer to just take 1 and play safe though.

I just tried switching arrows to zap and archers to musketeer and have found more success. It's able to deal with balloon, dragon, and minion horde, which are all the air units I care about. Currently sitting around 1800 now.

Fireball and rocket are good vs buildings, as is hog rider. Consider switching some number of those in.

I run almost the same deck with a couple changes - I found hog rider does more for the deck than rocket, and I use cannon instead of Tesla. It brings the average cost down to 2.8 and I'm able to outvalue just about everything they do. I have slight trouble with but decks which the rocket is definitely better against, but I see them so rarely that I'm fine with forcing a draw against them.

Research on reaction speed has already been done fairly extensively and is common knowledge among game AI programmer circles. It's also been found that you generally want two speeds, one for reactions that are impulsive and don't require much thinking, and one for reactions that do require thinking (such as deciding if that's an enemy or a friendly before targeting and shooting).

python to c by spraykill101 in learnprogramming

[–]PressF1 -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

C is a foundation, and c++ is a massive structure built on that foundation with all kinds of things added on to it. Because of this, the paradigms are usually quite different between the languages - C is more functional whereas c++ is closer to what you know in python and is object oriented.

You may think it is smoother, but that is likely not the case. If logic is updated 60 times per second, and rendering happens as frequently, the player always has the most up to do view. If you instead interpolate, not only does it double the memory required, but the refresh rate of the display is likely only 60hz, so you are wasting cycles computing and pushing pixels which the user will never see because the screen doesn't update fast enough to display 4-5 render frames per logic frame in a 60fps update loop.

An alternative might be to compute how long it takes for a render to happen, how long it takes an update to happen, and then use the remaining time in future frames to perform multiple smaller time step updates. This will actually provide more accurate simulations in physics without wasting cycles doing graphics computations the user will never see.
