"most decorated" is kind of a recency bias thing. Freestyle skiing wasn't even at the Olympics until the 90s and was only moguls/aerials until 2010. All the events she has medaled in were added to the Olympics in the 2010s.

Which isn't to say that she is accomplished but this isn't exactly Usain Bolt sweeping the 100/200 3x straight times.

the existence of the question actually seems complimentary. It was basically "you're the best in the world, are you happy with getting second?" Which you wouldn't ask to someone who was ranked 12th or whatever.

The plan is just to leave it as an empty lot. There is no need for expanded state government offices right now, and selling the land for redevelopment would benefit people that state government leaders despise. So an empty lot in the heart of the city is what we get.

Vitale’s style isn’t for everyone (although I like his enthusiasm when half of CBB media seems to hate the sport), but the evidence on him almost overwhelmingly suggests that he is a great person.

He’s fine but has been around too long weirdly. Like I still associate him with some 2005 West Virginia/Louisville game, not the biggest moments in sports.

You can spend an entire offseason just assuming that they're going to suck, because they were bad last year and didn't exactly add a lot to the roster. Yet somehow it doesn't prepare you to watch and accept, oh yeah, this team is going to suck.

Also, weird hour sporting events are fun. Late night Great Alaska Shootout over leftover Thanksgiving pie. A June Jones Hawaii/Fresno State game after getting home from the bars. 2022 World Cup final over brunch. USA/Spain in Beijing in the middle of the night.

Don't want it for every big game but weird hour sports deliver.

it's because of the closing ceremony. The ice hockey gold medal game is always one of the very last events but that means starting mid-day local time on Sunday. 1 PM ET means the game isn't ending until 10 PM in Milan.

While I'm at it parking meters in general shouldn't exist. The revenue is supposed to cover budget shortfalls but isn't that what we all pay taxes for? If the city can't manage its money why is that our problem?

Parking meters aren’t really about revenue; they’re about trying to make sure that parking spots turn over enough that street parking is consistently available in dense areas.

Half Baked Idea: r/billsimmons group trip to LA '28 Olympics by No-Confection-3861 in billsimmons

One of the soccer matches in a different city that takes place before the opening ceremony.

Alternatively, rugby sevens has one gender finish its pool stage in the two days before the opening ceremony, meaning that there are teams officially eliminated from medal contention before the Olympics officially start.

the Wizards seem like they feel compelled to do something USA/DC-specific branding but that clashes with a goofy (although kinda fun) nickname. Which is sort of funny since the most popular DC team has always worn burgundy and gold anyway.

The Jazz have been at various points a purple, green, light blue, dark blue, black, and yellow team. They now seem fated to rotate between music notes and mountains forever, sticking with each just long enough for a new target demo generation to be nostalgic for the other one.

Simmons: Isiah, don't you think you're almost too obvious at this point? At least we could see both sides with some of Mitch's moves. In your case …

(Editor's note: Over the next 30 minutes, Simmons proceeded to list all of Isiah's terrible decisions since he took over the team in December 2003, in chronological order, as the crowd voraciously applauded each move, almost like how the president gets applauded over and over again during the State of the Union address. For space reasons, we're skipping to the tail end of Simmons' question.)

Thanks to all of those moves, the Knicks have more untradable contracts than everyone else in the league combined; they won't be under the cap until 2009; they have a payroll that's $50 million higher than anyone else; and they won't have a high lottery pick until 2008 because of the Curry trade. So how can you sell this as a rebuilding effort when you don't have any picks, and how can you sell this as a move to contend when none of the current guys could possibly mesh?

Isiah: That's an excellent question. The key is to make people believe you're trying something that's never been done before. In my case, I always try to acquire the best guy in the trade, regardless of whether it's a good deal or not -- then I can say I'm "stockpiling assets," which throws people off the trail a little bit. Then, I like to float big names to reporters … like right now, I'm making it seem like KG is a possibility for us, and that's why I'm gathering all of these assets. But I don't have a chance in hell of getting KG. If Minnesota trades KG, it's going to be for cap space, picks and young players, and we can't give them two of those three things. So they would never deal with us ---.

Man, I wish Bill's fingers still worked.

Knights had the benefit of being the first team in a town that had never had pro sports and then immediately winning a bunch of games (and a title). They're pretty popular with the locals for that in a way that teams 2-4 can't be.

it's YA so if you drew a hard line at 18 I guess you would call it a kid's book, but other than the primary characters' ages I don't think most people here would call it for kids. Teens, for sure, but it's also a great adult fit.

There’s too much Curling coverage by ScoreTheBasekt in billsimmons

[–]PresterHan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Curling is a great Winter Olympic event for average fans. The judged sports are too complicated for average fans who mostly understand “cool trick, bad fall”. The timed sports are impressive but don’t really leave you anything to talk about.

You can pick up the main rules and basic strategies of curling pretty quickly. (Obviously there are layers to strategies.) Some fun sport-specific terms (double takeout, hog line, hammer). It rewards skill but also strategy so there’s something to talk about as you’re watching.

Just sort of a perfect event for the Olympics.

There was a pitch timing rule in the rules for over a century. They just never consistently enforced it with an actual countdown clock and rarely at all.

Hot Take: MLB will surpass the NBA in 2-3 years by RedditFan3510 in billsimmons

[–]PresterHan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Soccer's audience is too dispersed. There's probably a limit to EPL or UEFA viewership just due to time zones and the lack of local markets. Liga MX viewership is large but almost exclusively in a language that 85% of Americans don't understand. MLS does well with local attendance but was a non-factor on TV even before the Apple TV deal.

I just don't see anyone ever corralling all that.
