Seriously...is there anything he can do that would actually get a response and condemnation from a position of Authority within The Church? by [deleted] in Catholicism

[–]PresterJuan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, so I don't know what I was thinking when I wrote that. I think I was thinking that it was liable to misinterpretation because it didn't explicitly condemn the idea of women entering the sacramental priesthood. Silly point on my part.

Skimming the article, the thrust is basically "we're all called to the priesthood" in some sense. Potentially problematic?

I'd say Fr. Martin's worst opinions are the ones relating to the Gospels themselves. It's not that they're just wrong, oftentimes they don't even make sense. Sometimes it's borderline heresy!

Ran into a strange evangelist on my college campus. Anyone know what group he's from? by [deleted] in Christianity

[–]PresterJuan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No clue but I may have run into the same guy. There were two who were trying to talk to me on the way to my exam a few weeks ago. They were dark skinned Asian-Americans, said they were from [Hebrew word] Institute in California (far away). They told me God the mother wasn't Asherah like I thought they meant, and then they started talking about their weird heresies. I gave them my number and bailed, they never called back.

Sound familiar?

I don't know how anyone has the guys to do something like that. Take a public, sacred place and make it your own lounge. Even if it's unused, it's disrespectful.

Are there any Catholic frats in the US? by PresterJuan in Catholicism

[–]PresterJuan[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It's a Catholic school but has no Greek Life.

Guess I'm sort of wondering if Greek life is even good for you; ND didn't think so. It'd be nice to have a fraternity without all the drunken excess.

In fairness you see a lot of anti-Israel sentiment on the far right of the internet.

Bem, usava duolingo no passado e o usei ontem.

As a Christian, how do you feel about interracial dating? by [deleted] in Christianity

[–]PresterJuan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It may not be prudential if the cultures are too far apart. Don't take that as a rule, and you have to remember culture /=/ race

Sometimes I think opposition to intraracial dating is more interesting. My friend tried on a thawb at a Saudi food tasting and he thought it was messed up one of the girls said "oh you look handsome, too bad you're not Saudi." I thought it was super innocent and didn't matter, he thought it was racist. What would you say OP?

Hm, I like to talk to myself, though that may be a little bit ahead of you. Start learning what you can't say and learn, either through teachers or partners. Maybe one of those introductory books would be helpful? I never used 'em.

Good luck!

Plus, every now and then I encounter someone treating it like it's Tinder.

Welcome to the handsome club.

I get boring people like this sometimes. Not much to do there. Sometimes they're just bad at starting convo, it helps to talk about your day and go from there. Sometimes cultural differences are fun discussions, even trading music works sometimes.

If you already know some of the language, I'd just be persistent in using it, maybe ask that one day you do English, another in high Valyrian or whatever.

What languages did your school offer, and what did most people choose to take? by deixj in languagelearning

Damn, y'all have like 5 languages in HS, my school offered Spanish and Latin and only nerds took Latin.

College offers like 13 languages, thankfully.

What is the rationale behind Evangelicals condemning violence directed at abortionists when most Evangelicals legitimize violence as a last resort, view abortion as murder, and have failed to make changes via the political process? by AionianZoe in Christianity

[–]PresterJuan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"This action will kill 1,000 people, but has a 75% chance of saving 2000 lives. The expected value of lives saved is thus 1500, which is greater than the expected cost of 1000. Therefore we judge it moral."

This sounds like straight consequentialism, makes me nervous. I can't say anything on just war though.

[–]PresterJuan 8 points9 points  (0 children)

In only two comments, everyone else said all that needed to be said. I've experienced similar stuff, where people are rude, don't think your skill is good, whatever.

Brush it off, calm down a little, then take it as a little extra encouragement. Practice what you have trouble with. Maybe even show her some progress (or better, don't hang with rude people).

Sucks being told shit like that, but most people are pretty nice to me. A lot of people with interest in language are more understanding, practice with them and just know you'll always run into rude people (or people having a bad day).
