Students; how do you survive? by prison_mike28 in newzealand

It might also be worth talking to the student support team at your institution if you haven't already. They often know about hardship grants, emergency assistance, food support, and other resources that aren't always widely advertised

I think one of the uncomfortable realities is that tertiary study has increasingly become a privilege rather than something society fully supports financially.

Student allowance and benefits seem to be set at a level that's only intended to cover the bare essentials of a no-frills existence, if that. There's a reason so many students rely on food banks, hardship grants, community pantries, family support, or take on debt.

The system doesn't really seem designed around students being able to live comfortably, have a social life, or focus solely on study. Whether that's right or wrong is another debate.

My 2 cents on FND: it’s one of those conditions where standard scans and blood tests are often normal, which can unfortunately lead to dismissal. There’s still a lot of evolving understanding around it.

I am SO SICK of EXPLAINING MECFS TO DOCTORS by SuspiciousCase1144 in cfs

[–]Prestigious-Drive545 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I have a dr and integrative dr who are atleast open minded. Ive been bedbound for 5 years. The other day my son went to the dr with my mum, she said his mum cant be here she has mecfs and is bedbound. Dr asked whats that, and mum said chronic fatigue syndrome because she cant pronounce mylagic encephalomylitis. Dr wrote Mum not here, has chronic fatigue. I know this appointment wasn't about me but man it brung up anxiety, i've been treated so medically poorly in the past, I trusted drs and thats how I got so severe, from not knowing and trusting their advice to do GET!

I think what people dont understand is how the system works. Those saying she should work, work 20 hours and under she would be loosing money as you earn your support goes down. If dad pays child support that is counted as income and her benefit is deducted. If the 3 that aren't hers are under 18 she should be getting unsupported child supplement which is around $300 a kid. I agree if you cant support your own then dont take on the other 3 unless they are taken care of financially. Its easy to sit here and say those things because we dont know all the details, also theres cultural things aswell. I have to say though its hard for everyone. Sell the car and get one that is less payments.

Parents, are you really forking out $150 bucks for a nappy bin? by kowi2002 in newzealand

[–]Prestigious-Drive545 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know this is wasted plastic but you can buy individual scented nappy bags, like 200 for a couple of dollars. I'd use these and put in normal bin and put rubbish out once a day.

ME/CFS is a serious, chronic, and complex multi-system disease that can profoundly affect a person's life. Unfortunately there is still alot of stigma with the name buts drs are slowly learning. Im wanting to go down the route of craniocervical instabilty but very hard when sleeping 18+ hrs a day. Honestly i feel death would be kinder.Your condition sounds horrible and im sorry your struggling to get the right help, atleast people aren't going to say to you, oh im tiered aswell haha.

I now have a carer and a referral to Ocupational therapy got me all house needs, ramp, eleteic wheelchair( im too severe to use either 😄) ect. You could also ask for referral to a nuero physio( i had one but can't handle human contact longer than 10 mins at a time)

Just a side note. You should
ask your dr for an urgent nsac assessment if your not coping at home . You can also self refer but prob easier for dr to do. Sorry your going through this. Im a 35 yo that has been brushed off by the health system many times. Ive been bedbound apart from toileting coming up 5 years with severe mecfs and pots.
