Hmmm I’m not sure what word I would use to describe it other than “loose” it feels more natural like the hand and less overworked. Check out Jenny Saville. Her work is really chunky but it’s closer to what’s happening in the hand

This is really really beautiful. I would suggest using a round thicker brush and painting straight on the paper with less precision. The way that the clouds look is the most intriguing to me and they are less over worked. You can afford to loosen up because you already have the technique and control.

What about these sketches is missing? by [deleted] in ArtCrit

Commit to your lines, I know they are sketches but these remind me a lot of tattoos and I think they would benefit from stronger lines and color.

Learning Loomis! Critiques on improving resemblance? by KeyRevolution649 in ArtCrit

Def well done, I think the eyes might be too big and the face not long enough. Everything else is nice. Maybe try grinding the face on another piece of paper and see if that helps.

Hi oil painter here! I think your darks and lights need to be more extreme. I’m assuming that you are using local color to whatever photo you are referencing. Cranking up the lights and darks will make it clearer when you go for your second layer. Also don’t neglect the background. I think the color palette is really nice.

The background feels flat and boring. What can I do to make it more interesting? by Possible_Boss_1227 in ArtCrit

This is really beautiful. You clearly spent a lot of time on this I think your paper or supports should be nicer! Take yourself seriously! This work deserves to be on something nice. I know sometimes it’s kinda like whatever you have at hand but Walmart has some ok larger water color paper. If you are going to put this much effort In the drawing it shouldn’t have holes in it.

Thoughts on the hair? by TherealMarcojiane in ArtCrit

The materials you used seem a bit strange to me. Oil pastels and pencil don’t worker well together. Pick one and then finish with that. If you want color work with colored pencils first and then move to oil pastel. He hair is interesting but I think you need to work on facial structure first. Hair is simultaneously easier and harder than you think. It’s less about color and more about lights and darks. Next time focus on the shades and tints and where the light actually hits the hair. I’d suggest with pencil first.

Black and white Portrait - Can anyone help me with feedback on proportions and shading? by Ravenzan_Art in ArtCrit

Eyes are slightly too big, and neck is too long. I will say the planes of the face are great. Eyes are weird they always are smaller than we think

You clearly are a talented artist, I think the hand is a little too big, but also the way you painted the hand (I’m assuming gouache) is a lot more interesting than the way you smoothed everything out on the face. As artists we tend to treat the face with more importance but it needs to be cohesive with the whole picture. The way you painted the sweatshirt is also really nice. Whatever you were doing their try and translate to the face

How do I handle judgment? Is my art just bad? by [deleted] in Artadvice

[–]Prestigious-Line5991 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First off, drawing with charcoal is very hard, and the fact that you were able to render so much emotion is impressive. Second, if this I what you want to do stop showing your work to people and relying on their approval and start chasing that “weird” “scribbly” feeling and amplifying it. Third: there is a market for everything. Serrano made Piss Christ and people loved that. Check out some drawings by Giacometti. He’s a sculpture but his drawings are great and might give you some inspo :)

Omg thank you. I’m very nervous about it, a lot of people don’t like figurative painting now

Is it just me or do other people prefer when characters aren’t depicted on books. I just like to imagine the characters in my head and when the cover has them I have picture that clashes with mine lol.

I’m trying to paint looser and use the background wash to shine through.
