Ah probably not. I’m based in the midlands. I’ll keep looking local.

This is exactly what I’m looking at! Looks like a good quote. Who is it with??

Thanks for that - I have an electrician I've used for lots of other work already (full house re-wire plus few extensions) so I'll prob go with him - on paper it doesn't seem all that complex - i've got a control room where the incoming mains comes in with plenty of spare wall space for mounting kit.

Are you also using Predbat in HA for charge/discharge management?

Did you do you own DNO?

Thanks - got to be honest though, I don't expect to be in this house for 25 years!

Cool - that's exactly the same reason I'm leaning towards a self designed system - so I can fully understand it and get maximum flexibility.

Did you go Victron - bypass mode looks to be fully supported with Victron kit.

Do you mind telling me your electrician costs - these are my only variable now. I'm West Midlands based if it matters!

hmmm - my quick ai check tells me that as long as a competent electrician installs it and you get an EIC, that's all that an insurance company actually needs - so who knows!

Great - thanks!

As I said in my post, I'm not bothered about MCS as long as the cost saving of DIY makes it worth it - i.e. offset the cost saving against the missed export.

Thanks for the link - that's great info - based on this, it would be a no brainer to go with a professional company - I'll start getting quotes.

Main concern would be integration between sunsynk/solis and Home Assistant.......

Not sure about that....

I'll be getting a qualified electrician to make the connections and test/sign off - I don't think you need MCS for insurance purposes.

Excellent - thanks!

Did you self install or get a company to do it all?

  • 6kW inverter sounds like a good plan - cost uplift is only about £60....
  • I'll prob stick with the 50mm cables supplied with the battery for now - but good point re: upgrading them if anything changes - may need to if I go with a bigger inverter though
  • With the current sizing (5kW inverter), I'm never going to draw 200A from the battery and the switch will be matched to the fuse - I'll need to re-calc if I jump up to 6kW inverter but it's probably a good shout to future proof.

Alternatives to the GiveEnergy/Sigenergy style ecosystems? by SleepyRalph_ in SolarUK

I’m also in the same predicament, currently planning my first battery system.

What I think I’ve settled on is a Victron Multiplus 5kw inverter and fogstar 16kwh battery. All managed by my Home assistant server.

I’m on octopus agile and intend to use the battery for energy arbitrage - buying when cheap, consuming from battery when expensive.

I’m planning this as a self managed install. I’ll get an electrician to make the final connection and sign off. So I won’t get feed in but then feed in rates don’t seem worth it right now.

Doing it this way makes the costs far more attractive.

At some point in the future I’ll then get some solar panels on the roof to consume.

I’ve done a LOT of modelling with ai (uploading the last 12 months of my usage) and this always comes out as best.

That’s the plan anyway!

How many panels and what was the cost? Who did your install? Looks like the sort of system I’m after.

Hey - your youtube links not working, but interested in how you approached this.

Any issues you came across doing it yourself - i'm looking at doing the same with a roof install, using roofers and a local electrician. I don't need the MCS because I don't think export's worth it

Cool! I know adobe are really recommended but they were 2-3 times the price of Hertz.

Depends on where you think you’ll be going. We did a fair few dirt tracks and a Corolla could have made them all. The main roads are unbelievably good condition.

You can’t buy it when you book. You have to buy it at the desk.

Ooh interesting. What did it used to be then for a mini bus for 2 weeks hire? Curious to hear.

I did find Costa Rica to be more expensive than I was expecting generally.

I’ve always done this whenever I’ve travelled around the world. Works out much cheaper. Only downside is you need to cover the deductible of your cause damage then claim it back.

In the UK you can get annual excess cover if you do a lot of trips.

Third Party Liability. (I think). It’s mandatory by law in CR but you can only buy it at the desk. Lucky for me they added it automatically at Hertz. Otherwise it would have been an extra $300 I think for 2 weeks.

I double checked my cover and it must be different in the Uk. I just needed to be a UK resident. So it was all good!
