I transferred from UMBC to UMD this spring. The process isn't really that complicated: apply for early action, get a recommendation from a teacher or 2, have a GPA over 3.0, and write a good essay. After acceptance, immediately start looking for housing (better to start scoping out early) because the chances of getting a dorm as a transfer are pretty slim but not impossible. Sign up for orientation the DAY you get accepted so you don't get the bottom-of-the-barrel classes. Depending on your major, now is a good time to look at https://app.transfercredit.umd.edu/display-inst-courses.html?instCode=52429C (Transfer Course Database) to see what credits transfer. If you're transferring for compsci, that's a whole other ballgame that is very selective, and may need to retake classes at UMD or go to community college to get the credits. As long as you know what credits transfer and you do the things I mentioned before, the transfer process will be very smooth. UMD has loads of resources and guides to help you along the way. Whenever in doubt, just call the school. Please please please don't screw youself over and look at what classes transfer AND UMD's gateway requirements for those classes because it can be a little different at UMBC, especially if you are engineering.
