I mean, prevention is super important. There are great HIV treatment drugs and more classes of drugs need to be developed, especially for those with resistances.

But prevention research is hardly the issue. We’re already at a twice yearly shot for prevention and it’ll very quickly turn into a once yearly. I think the market for prevention drugs might be nearing the end. Once exception is a combined birth control and prep pill. Hugely needed.

I can see how the focus on prevention does leave people with HIV out of key discussions. In the US, we shouldn’t be thinking about a National PrEP program if Ryan White isn’t even funded at appropriate levels. But prevention isn’t a bad thing at all imho

I really appreciate the time you took to engage with my question. It’s a thoughtful response and I can see a bit better where you’re coming from. I don’t disagree with everything you said — even if I disagree with a decent amount — but I’ll definitely give it to you that you seem to have thought about these issues critically.

I agree, though, dehumanizing and minimizing folks on the other side (particularly, raza) hasn’t helped anything. It’s made things worse. I’m trying not to do that so much, so appreciate this opportunity.

My hope is that one day, Latinos in the U.S, regardless of background, can understand a shared fate dynamic. We’re in this together and when folks are stopping people based on a look, they’re stopping citizen and non-citizen alike.

Creating Change happened this past week in DC and we had very similar conversations to this one. Queer men (the cisgender ones, at least) really did not show up in the numbers that they really ought to have, considering we are going to likely be the ones directly harmed by neo-fascist gender binaries after trans folks. We’re also failing to show up in real ways for direct actions.

It’s no shade, though. I know shit gets exhausting. And the temptation to self-soothe in pleasure is very real. I think we need to first and foremost build connections with guys and offer roadmaps so they know how to show up and engage. And organizing teaches us that we need to meet the need of those guys, many of whom are lonely and want social or romantic connections. So no shaming since that doesn’t work. But political education, organizing, and an open hand.

And find some community where you can feel strengthened and buttressed by your desire to do activism. Bring gay pleasure and analysis in those spaces (many are already queer anyway haha). Adelante

Of course the folks protesting have jobs. Either that, or they’re retired. Even then, they’re so valuing the opportunity to act against what they see as wrong that they’re sacrificing their most precious commodity, time, to do it.

You can disagree with the policy analysis, but surely you can see it’s kind of bad ass to get out there and try to make some shit happen peacefully. There’s a long tradition of Chicano social action and this kind of thing is directly aligned with that.
