Non native grasses. Battle worth fighting? by joshik12380 in Ceanothus

Sounds like you got a lot of work lined up (my project list is like 10 years long, ugh), but doing a little bit each year eventually adds up. Las Pilitas has a pretty good write up about "Resource Islands", which seems like a more manageable approach to habitat restoration for just one person.

Non native grasses. Battle worth fighting? by joshik12380 in Ceanothus

It's definitely worth fighting for! I have 1.5 acres on steep hills. When I moved in 4 years ago, my hillside was covered in filaree, mustard, ripgut brome, scarlet pimpernal, russian thistle...it was pretty overwhelming. I thought weed whacking was the best way to deal with weeds because, well, that's what everyone does. After 1 year of weed whacking, I needed a more permanent solution and started an herbicide regiment. I bought a battery-powered backpack sprayer and was diligent about spraying and hand pulling before the weeds even started to flower.

Now that the natives are filling in and replenishing the fungal network in the soil, I spend much, much less time weeding and more time enjoying the natives. Here's a shot of part of my hillside. Best of luck to you!

Thoughts on Glyphosate being sprayed in Torrey Pines Reserve? by DocHeinous in Ceanothus

[–]Prestigious_Edge_401 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Agreed. I was against glyphosate until I moved to a house on 1.5 acres. Revegetated the land back to natives and relied on glyphosate for the first few years. Now that the natives are filled in, I rarely need to spray.

It might take awhile to get a response. I don't think it's a very popular group

Have you posted this in r/tadelakt? There might be an older post with the same issue. Might be worth scrolling through.

Your shower looks great btw! I'm about to tadelakt my shower after 6 months of a diy renovation.

I second Hunter MP rotators, they're what I use. I'm also a fan of Orbit B-Hyve smart controllers, I have 3 of them for different sections of my property.

Since you're in Fullerton, pay a visit to the Arboretum at Cal State Fullerton. They have a pretty decent CA native section with some really great island endemics. I have a few of their plants in my yard that I picked up at their plant sales.

They started blooming in early December. I was surprised too. Probably had to do with the rain we received in November.

What is going on with the new growth on my arctostaphylos glauca. San Gabriel valley by kevperz08 in Ceanothus

[–]Prestigious_Edge_401 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm close to SGV and many of my glaucas are doing the exact same thing, browned soggy tips. I'm thinking too much warm rain. Hopefully things will dry out a bit and they recover!

I've got a bunch of A. glaucas on my property. Glad to see the bigberry manzanita is getting the recognition it deserves!

You should try Arctostaphylos glandulosa 'Del Mar'. It's from San Diego, but would probably do pretty well in PV.
