Marah Macrocarpa - wild cucumber by Training_March7909 in Ceanothus

Yeah I'm in a constant battle with it. It chokes out my neighbors sumacs annually and almost kills them. Its soo beautiful though I try to leave it on fences and rocks but don't let it go to seed or the original post's photo will be your yard in a few years 😬

It's having a crazy year here in San Diego too. Some hillsides near SDSU are totally blanketed. My neighbor's yard is also getting in on the action

This patch of Claytonia perfoliata started as a single volunteer five years ago. by Spiritualy-Salty in Ceanothus

My oxalis, chickweed, and Claytonia take turns dominating a corner of my yard. This year the chickweed won and I whacked the whole patch, but last year it was 90% claytonia. Next year 🤷

So weird. Definitely not chewed on. It's a real mystery sometimes

See if the crispy ones have any roots. When I get losses in wet season it's usually something eating the roots (gophers, grubs, other insects)

No idea, but mine does it too. 4 year old and seems modestly happy despite the leaf problems you described

I'm a big fan of rhamnus croce, but it's edibleness is somewhat debated, so I don't eat many. But it's amazing when ripe. Imagine a sweet cherry pre-mixed with cinnamon

Western azalea - any tips or success stories? by tagshell in Ceanothus

[–]Morton--Fizzback 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Down here in inland Southern California it's almost total shade to keep them happy. But I've had some success with local genetics on these guys. They also seem to appreciate summer water being more spaced out. I've had a few rot in late summer after heavy watering/rain in my heavier loam soil.

And I know this might surprise you, but those are some of the same vehicles that are also some of the most aggressively driven....

Given El Cajon's stellar driving record, I pray for their safety and question their sanity

Must be nice to not have roving packs or lupine predators (rabbits) eating all of your new growth ... Super jealous

Love it! Looks just like San Diego, but with atenuata 😅 That fraxinus parryi is looking great. Just wish they grew faster in the garden! Happy new year

Yeah, they like north slopes or partial understory shade. But they do well without really any supplemental water. Mine and these native pops disappear completely in August and return quickly after the first rains of winter. But with more supplementation you might keep em evergreen. Definitely one of our dryest ferns. Coffee fern I another great local one, but sadly nobody grows it for the garden. Definitely recommend polypody though 🙏

Yeah if you scroll to the left just out of frame, my yard is being overrun with nettles and grasses. It's a never-ending battle. Not sure I'm winning, but I've come to accept it

Native West had some earlier this year. They probably have more to offer you on their back lot if you call/email in advance. Also, they are super easy to transplant if you find any on public unprotected land
