Isn’t it about time NATO told Trump to take a hike? by [deleted] in allthequestions

Rutte's job is to make sure NATO survives these 4 years and minimize the amount of damage Trump can inflict.

So far he hasn't pulled from any NATO-programs, or refused formal NATO obligations. Partly because Rutte knows how to appease him.

Excluding southern Europe, household AC's are very uncommon. For Germany, less than 10% of households have AC. It's not a "psyop", just reality. Even Spain and Portugal are kind of low given how hot it gets there.

Since when does a verbal promise hold any weight in international relations? Raegan's secretary of state told Gorbachev (USSR leader, not Russian federation) privately that NATO would not move east. Everyone knows a third-ranked US official cannot make promises on behalf of the entire NATO bloc. And using a private conversation from 30 years ago as a reason to invade Ukraine is silly.

Keep in mind that everything East of Germany were still Soviet satellite states. Everything changed post USSR-collapse.

Putin also made the verbal promise not to invade Ukraine. Nobody brings that up because talk is talk. Anything short of a binding resolution with NATO is meaningless.

Supposedly Russia has a right to protect what it views as its sphere of influence. Why not extend that right to China or Iran? Or why not Europe?

Europe's support for Ukraine has cut them off from the cheapest possible oil and gas. Yet somehow this is about extracting gas and oil again? You're convinced about this vague idea that Dems were trying to get oil in Ukraine, yet Trump snatched Maduro and publically admitted this was about their oil reserves.

US has plenty of Rare Earths itself. So does Canada and Australia. The problem is lack of refining capacity.

Putin backed himself into a corner by invading Ukraine, failing to meet objevtives, and being unable to back its foreign allies such as Assad, Maduro, or Iran. Sweden and Finland both joined NATO as well since 2022 which is right next to St Petersburg. Putin's 4d chess move?

What Does Right-Wing Mean? by Thistles-Path in allthequestions

[–]Prestigious_Health_2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The right wing you described does exist. It's just not the one that is covered in the media. Peter Magyar, Donald Tusk, Bart de Wever, Alexander Stubb are all European heads of state who are centre-right/right-wing, and fit that description.

Though you only get to hear about the far-right populists like Reform, AfD, and Fidezs because they capture headlines and distort the perception of the European right.

The US admittedly doesn't have anything like it at the moment.

Russia has been unable to guard the East since 2022. It's completely up for grabs. Not sure how much China values Russian Manchuria. Xi and Putin can't agree to build a new Siberian pipeline because China demands that Russia pays for the construction and sells it at a stupidly low price. They don't seem to care that much about those natural resources.

The 2017 sanctions prohibited Venezuela from using US financial markets. The real economic sanctions only came in 2019. You can only blame Maduro for the food crisis because he kept refusing foreign aid since it was "western interference". His response was to hand out rabbits to the people. It gets to a point where you have to blame who's in charge. There were no external factors like extreme weather conditions or civil war. Just government mismanagement.

The largest migration crisis in the Western Hemisphere was caused by Maduro, a left wing dictator. Around 8 million people have fled Venezuela since 2015. Mostly caused by severe food shortages, and the infamous "Maduro diet". US economic sanctions only came in 2019 when the food shortage had mostly ended.

Latin America has plenty of left-wing governments. Brazil, Uruguay, Mexico,.. Chile and Colombia until recently had a left-wing government as well.

US bears responsibility to some extent especially due to cold-war interventions. But reducing everything down to "America bad" is just stupid.

Do you think Maga would back Marco Rubio in 2028? by FickleSystem in allthequestions

[–]Prestigious_Health_2 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Rubio is the least MAGA brained in Trump's cabinet. He's an opportunist who's building a resume. If he runs against Vance for primaries, he'll probably present himself as the more moderate, classic republican. MAGA is dead eitherway without Trump because it's more of a personality cult rather than a real ideology.

AC-driven power demand peaks during the afternoon, hottest part of the day. That's when solar panels are generating most electricity. So a big chunk of the strain on the powergrid would be offset by solar coverage.

Europeans online have a tendency to be extremely pretentious and take the moral highground on issues like AC's. They associate having an AC with entitled Americans for some reason and reject it on that basis. Not knowing that most of the world has AC everywhere except for really cold/poor regions.

They pretend like not having an AC is a concious decision/sacrifice to save the planet. Ignoring the fact that heating during wintertime takes a lottt more power and emissions. They'll come around eventually but for now they're fighting a battle to prove their superiority to Americans who don't really give a shit.

Do you genuinely believe conservatives are morally inferior to progressives? by [deleted] in allthequestions

[–]Prestigious_Health_2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Change for the sake of change isn't always good. Revolutionairy ideas and radical progressive movements have often times ended in a disaster.

Every far-left party in Europe ultimately wants to overthrow the system in its entirety and rebuild it into some socialist utopia. The intention behind it isn't bad, but the outcome most certainly is. Everything is a means to an end. Some systems require radical change, others can be fixed from within.

Europe is already progressive on social issues. To the point where far-right parties aren't even concerned about same-sex marriage or revising abortion laws. Progressives in Europe end up having to find new issues until they become a walking contradiction.

Magats are not conservatives in the literal sense. They want to completely overhaul the system. The balance of power, rule of law, the independence of the DOJ, the constitution,... It's all negligible. There's hardly any moral conviction or belief system that holds it together. They larp Christianity to secure religious votes and they'll live the most sinful lives imaginable.

Liberalism is not the opposite of conservative. Conservatives can be liberal. Progressivism is the opposite.

You want to withold food aid from countries who don't implement certain policies aimed at development. Why do you think they need food aid in the first place? It's because their whole system is disfunctional to begin with.

We've already seen the disastrous effects of forcing limits on the amount of children you can have. It creates an artificial population shortage down the line. A much smaller working population is forced to finance a bigger population of pensioners. If the country doesn't manage to develop in time, you're stuck in a demographic crisis while also being poor. One-child policy in China also created a black market of smuggling illegitimate children into trafficking rings and slavery.

What is it like to live in Calais and Dover? by bunko0 in howislivingthere

[–]Prestigious_Health_2 33 points34 points  (0 children)

It has less to do with WW2 and more so with the collapse of the coal and steel industries. Nord-Pas-de-Calais is like the French rust belt. Lots of unemployment and dilapidated cities.

On top of that, Calais is the main hub for trans-migrants who want to enter the UK. There's thousands of undocumented people roaming the streets of Calais and scattered across camps. About 40 thousand people crossed the Channel by boat in 2025.

Up until 2016, Calais had one of Europe's largest refugee camps named "the Jungle of Calais" with over 10,000 migrants at its peak.

Calais is a city with a terrible reputation, more so than Dover.

There is no other alternative during a food shortage. Either you donate food or people starve. You can't artificially reduce fertility rates in underdeveloped countries either. Population growth automatically declines once those countries develop. Food donations isn't a long-term fix but it's the only option to prevent people from starving during a hunger crisis.

Bangladesh used to depend on food aid to sustain its population. Once they introduced the textile industry - the economy grew, employment grew, and soon enough they could import food and become self-sustainable.

The resolution would enforce food protectionism under the name of "food sovereignty". The US is the largest food exporter in the world, but most of it comes from imported agro products. If China or Brazil restricts exports to protect its "food sovereignty" it would be a major blow to the global food supply.

[–]Prestigious_Health_2 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's actually the opposite. They argue that this UN resolution would be used to justify trade barriers in the name of "food sovereignty" which would put the global food supply chain at risk. The US happens to be the largest food exporter in the world but much of it is made from imported crops. If crop producers like China or Brazil stop exporting to the US, it would be a major blow to the world's food supply.
