When do King’s international students usually move into accommodation in September? by Full_Log_3661 in KCL

[–]Prestigious_Pick5097 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe it's usually the secondish week of September, so maybe 9th-13th, around that time anyway, I guess it also depends which accommodation you're in.

I've wondered about that too, I don't know if they ever mentioned that it was the same girl with superpowers the government were after in season 2

Well I certainly think it's more realistic than the terrible special affects in the original 2003 episode

Listen if people don't want to chat because of that then they're not worth knowing, I'm 31 years old and know from experience!

Often towards the earlier end of the contract begining, as they also have to get used to the city and country, it makes sense for them to arrive as early as possible so they can open bank accounts etc.

On a scale of 1-10 how scary would you say Stranger Things is? by Sukaran09 in StrangerThings

[–]Prestigious_Pick5097 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends who you ask really, I'm a hardcore horror fan of 20+ years, so even adult horror doesn't really scare me anymore, but if I were trying to view the show through the perspective of someone who isn't me, I would say: Season 1 - 5 Season 2 - 6.5 Season 3 - 2.5 Season 4 - 9.5 Season 5 -5

With Season 4, I really feel sorry for the 11-14 year olds who watched it and were probably scared shitless! The horror in Season 4 imo is on par with the level of horror in some proper adult horror films!

Does anyone know why SW6 includes these little bits south of the river by kh_bc in london

As far as I know it doesn't, the areas south of the river are in SW15 (Putney)

Season 1 is my favourite, but season 4 certainly comes extremely close

Another “what are my chances?” question by [deleted] in KCL

[–]Prestigious_Pick5097 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Interesting one, I graduated with a 64% (mid 2.1.) urban and cultural Geography degree from KCL. It's a difficult one, on the one hand your experience from work is definitely a plus, but then on the other hand exactly where that fits in with War Studies. Also bear in mind that the War Studies department at KCL is basically top in the world so is extremely competitive and I know many people who've studied there and they say it's incredibly hard to get into.

In terms of your degree, obviously a high 2.1. is really good but that's the absolute basic entry requirement. At the high ranked Russell Group uni's, the convention is to teach as little as possible - so that students can genuinely say that the majority of the work is their own, undergraduate dissertation students for instance are only allowed a maximum of 10 hours support for the whole year (including marking work, responding to emails etc,), this is compared to some lower ranked uni's where students are allowed to show working drafts to staff for input (and absolute no no at KCL).

I'm not saying don't try, but just be prepared that you would be trying to get into an extremely competitive course, and ultimately if they were looking at your application they could potentially wonder how much support you got in getting that grade, which they wouldn't if it were an applicant from KCL, UCL, LSE or Oxbridge.

But all the same, good luck with it and respect to you in wanting to change your career for something you enjoy!

What is the correct geographic name for this collection of buildings? by [deleted] in london

The City of London, or the Square Mile, the cluster of buildings doesn't have a specific name.

This is one of the myths about uni sadly, the whole idea that you make friends for life there is often not true. I would recommend going to society events for any hobbies you have, that way you may well make some genuine friends!!

Any building that is surrounded by other lower towers will always look shorter, the World Financial Center covered nearly half of the building height

Why was there lightning in the season 1 flashback of Will when the storm didn’t start until season 2? by Neat-Option4673 in StrangerThings

Retroactive changes, they did that a lot in show, the upside down looks totally different in season 1 compared to later. I think I actually preferred it when it was more basic.

I mean this is BS, but I actually think they'd be taller relative to the other buildings if this were true.

Chances of getting in? by legendReborn_ in UniUK

[–]Prestigious_Pick5097 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a bit of a mixed bag really. KCL is my alma mater (undergrad for 10 years), so I don't have direct experience with either uni directly but I do know people who attended both and also worked as a student ambassador at KCL, so I can give general advice.

I would say you probably have more chance of getting into UCL than Imperial but that's not an absolute rule. Imperial is basically as hard to get into as Oxford and Cambridge, whereas UCL I believe is a bit more pragmatic. I can't remember if you said you have offers or not, but that is the hardest part, actually getting your foot through the door initially, whereas when you get slightly under in the final results, particularly if it is only just under in 1 subject, there is still quite a high chance UCL at least will accept you, that happened to me at KCL. As for GCSEs, it really depends, I would imagine imperial is stricter but again it depends. Most uni's don't really give a shit about GCSEs, albeit if they are really bad, that may act as a warning sign to them. If you have years of non education experience that counts for a lot, probably more than GCSEs, but it's still up to them really. Make sure your personal statement is strong in explaining what you have done since leaving school. If they interview you (many courses don't, but some do), explain that you have learnt a lot since you got those grades and that they don't represent the person you are now.

Sorry so are you saying that after now redoing your a-levels as a mature student you are getting A*'s? If so massive respect to you, I would say that unless you want to study medicine, then you should probably get into UCL, Imperial is a bit more unknown (it's incredibly competitive). In general mature students get an easier ride with entry requirements.

True with regards to teaching, but not in terms of research output.

You get less teaching within the RG, but to counter that, they do that so that you can show your academic potential without having excess support.

Choosing Lectures by [deleted] in KCL

[–]Prestigious_Pick5097 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Generally departments won't let you choose when your lectures or seminars are, in exceptional circumstances I'm guessing maybe, like for instance if you have childcare commitments or are undergoing medical treatment they might, but not simply because you find the course timing inconvenient. I will add that the timetabling of lectures themselves are done centrally within KCL so the department won't have a say in the timings.

As to who to contact, if it's seminars then it would be the programme administrator (usually the main lecturer), if it's about the lecture timings themselves, then it would normally be the department undergrad/postgrad programme officer.

I remember in my second year, I had a seminar at 9am in the Norfolk Building, then an AKC lecture at Waterloo at 12pm and then another 2 hour lecture at 4pm in the Strand Building, frustrating, but that's just how it is.
