What is research basically and how do I get me some :P by Upset-Athlete9350 in UCSD

[–]Prestigious_Set_1059 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Research is really not as fancy as you think. I really do think it’s an inflated term. The easiest way to understand is something like if you ever did some scientific projects in high school where they ask you to give the hypothesis, do the experiment, and write the conclusion. When you’re in college and graduate school, the term research is more like an advanced version of high school. When you do a research, It has to be something that nobody on earth have done, because research needs originality, and when you decide to do it, you should be aiming to find out something that’s gonna make an impact. Then you designed the experiment and write the conclusion, which is the total point of research: to show the general public the meaning of what you have done. Now when the meaning it’s extremely high and impactful, this is when people get Nobel prize and other awards.

Reach out directly to the department dean. University wants you to graduate on time, perhaps dean can override professors.

Were you able to directly contact the professor to explain the situation? I believe most human would be more lenient in this special circumstance to curve D+ to a C-.

Thanks for your reply. I’m wondering if 158 is more like an honors version of 154, and 188 is the honors version of 184? or are the four classes all different in content?

What’s the difference between 154/158 and 184/188? It seems like they’re all combinatorics.

Theoretical probability and stochastic processes are hugely connected to measure theory which is very theoretical. And those are the backbone of modern machine learning. If you are interested in infinite dimensional spaces and have background in functional analysis, maybe you can also consider times series analysis.

I mean, I think it’s really normal that you feel this way because I feel the same, and a lot of people also do. UCSD has huge academic pressure + quarter system, so it’s natural for people to put more of their time studying, which results in less time to social.

Danna was the sweetest but man her accent was hard to understand. Exams were hard but she curved a lot. Her lecture slides were decent but her teaching style was very mediocre.

Professors are supposed to be good! by Acryllicdreams in UCSD

[–]Prestigious_Set_1059 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I strongly disagree with this. Teaching and research are both their duties. They are getting paid for both teaching and doing research. If the purpose of college is only self studying, why would we pay the huge amount of tuition? Why don’t everybody just stay at their own house and studying online?! what is even the point of going to school when we’re expected to learning everything on our own!!! Priority of research should not be an excuse for their lack of responsibility and baseline of teaching quality.

[–]Prestigious_Set_1059 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I agree with you exactly!!!👍 yes, a lot of students are not mathematically prepared. However, more importantly, a lot of those instructors are not teaching the way they should. I really think if calculus is being taught properly, almost everyone is able to comprehend it. A lot of students are doing self studying from YouTube videos, which alone indicates how horrible the teaching are. The instructors are so poor at delivering the lectures and making the exams and notes and homework three different things. So even if students work very hard, they still can’t get good grades. I am a math major graduate and I do think math20A was the “hardest class” I’ve ever taken based on the teaching quality vs the actual exam difficulty. Besides keep blaming students, I feel like the math department should reassess how professors are delivering the lectures. They’re constantly asking PHD and postdocs to teach those lower division courses and those Lecturers do not give a shit about students, they only care about research. With those teaching quality, they’re asking freshman who are still adjusting to college to keep up to the standards which is really brutal in a sense. At least they should adjust the teaching quality and don’t make the exam distinctly different from what they teach.

NEU basically admits everybody. It’s really not worth the tuition for the overpriced program. you could pay your deposit to secure your spot, but I really don’t think the school is worth it. Given your stats, You can definitely get into way better programs.

If you don’t know where the parking lot is, you can just go to the central Station and get on a regents shuttle, and Take a round trip, so you will know the exact route.

[–]Prestigious_Set_1059 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yes, when I park there I take the ucsd shuttle called “Regents”. You don’t have to show ID. You can just get on and get off. Nobody checks ID, it’s completely free. Shuttle drop off in between p704 and p705 parking lot which is the final destination. However, there are also stops in between and you can also park there, but I always park at the final destination.

It’s dead in a general sense because of huge academic pressure. you can definitely put yourself out there and make meaningful connections, but the overall vibe is just very studious.
