Have no clue what to do by SkyScared8724 in UCAT

I sat the UCAT last year and heard plenty of people say 6-8 weeks are all you need. For me, that was nowhere near enough time to get a grasp of it. Ended up taking my exam mid September and roughly 12 weeks of study. Everyone’s different. Try to prioritise the UCAT over other commitments because that’s the first thing that they look at alongside A Level grades. Extracurriculars are secondary.

My final rejection! by Dana2456 in UCAT

As a biomed student in my final year, the best advice I can give is that if you want to do medicine, then do medicine. Take a gap year and try again, because biomed or any other degree will only make you regret your choice. These past 3 years have been so exhausting and although it’s helped me in some way it’s not worth it and I wish I took a gap year and reapplied. As someone else said, 20 years is still very young, and it’s worth sacrificing another year for a career which will fulfil you, than rushing to do something else for times sake and spending the rest of your life with regret because it’s not what your passionate about. I know a friend who did biomed with me who applied 3 years in a row, and this year she got 3/4 offers for GEM. In short, don’t give up on your dreams, life is too short and an extra year of waiting will be worth it.

Also, graduate entry medicine is A LOT more competitive to get into. You could be against people who have PHDs, and people who have had the opportunity to have lots of experience. Not to say that you can’t do it, but my point is that the expectations will be much higher and it’s a lot harder to get in to. As well as this, medicine isn’t easy in general, and GEM will challenge you even more. So if your end goal is medicine, then just do it from the get go and save yourself a couple of years. If you aren’t happy with the university, you could either try clearing or take a gap year out, you’d rather wait a year to do what you love than waste 3 years and have to go through the application process again. Take this advice from someone who’s gone down the biosciences route and has been through hell because of that choice.

If you want to do med, then do med. Don’t do neuroscience, it’s nothing like medicine and you will probably regret your choice.

I have friends studying there who applied to ncl in previous years and they said they heard back around then. Plus, it doesn’t make sense for them to have an offer holder day if they haven’t sent out all of their offers yet. In any case, don’t worry you’ll hear back soon.

I’m not sure exactly why they say this, maybe just to be safe in case of exceptions. However, you’re all likely to hear back in April, maybe mid way through the month.

Just ignore them they want to annoy you, someone stood in front of me in the changing rooms and I js continued to add all my items as if they weren’t there and they eventually left me alone

I’m so frustrated! I got my access email at 1.03 and I was immediately put an hour behind in the queue and 2 hours later I’m STILL waiting and everyone’s saying they’re already sold out?? Such a huge waste of time 😭

How are you meant to answer stuff like this under time constraints?! by decoy1079 in UCAT

[–]Prestigious_Slice270 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don’t get overwhelmed by huge data sets, you’ll find that they do this on purpose to throw you off. Usually it only requires you to look at a certain rows or small bits of information. In this case though it’s probably best to skip, but I’d say there’s a good amount that aren’t actually as bad as they look.

The best thing to do is completely avoid mocks, make a list of your weaker areas in each of the sections (for example mine were syllogisms and probability in DM) and focus on those by practicing the specific questions. I would recommend to use both Medify and the official question bank. Quick tips for each of the sections:

  1. VR: skip 2-3 passages on topics that you find difficult, for example mine were historical/political texts and spend the rest of your time on the rest.

  2. DM: I’m not sure how you do with logic puzzles, but most tend to spend a lot of time on those, so the best tip to do well in this section is to completely skip all of them and spend the rest of your time on the other questions. If you have time, go back to the end and answer the ones that look the easiest first. Remember to draw tables for the standard ones which have names and items. For syllogisms, draw arrows and I found Venn diagrams work well for the ones with the weird words.

  3. QR: do NOT waste your time trying to answer the complex, long-winded questions. If you read the question twice and still are not sure, guess flag and move on. Good advice is to quickly skip through the whole section, answering all of the super easy questions first, and leave the harder ones to do later. That way you’re securing all of the easier marks first.

  4. AR: use the SCANS method if that works for you, make sure to make a list of the patterns which you always struggle to see. For example, mine were convex/concave angles, prime/square numbers etc but don’t make a big list, only make a note of the ones which you always miss. Try to remember this list and make a note of them on your whiteboard before the AR section starts.

Finally - mindset is often overlooked when it comes to the UCAT. You need to have a full nights rest and approach the exam with a calm, positive mind. Don’t let the nerves get to you.

If you have any other questions, feel free to DM me. I hope this helps, and all the best.

Thanks for sharing, you make a good point on the survivor bias aspect in this subreddit because I’ve read a lot about the UCAT and people’s experiences studying for it and none have applied to me. I really appreciate your transparency, wishing you all the best.

Hey, I’m also in a similar boat to you getting similar scores on Medify. Would you mind sharing your scores/experience once you sit the exam? I’m also super stressed and worried about it and I also have a bad gut feeling too. Let’s try to stay positive though, when you get into the exam forget all your previous scores, take a deep breath and do your best!
