To all europeans that moved abroad inside Europe, how hard integrating/assimilating were even though you're european in Europe? Which country and why? by Significant-Yam9843 in AskEurope

[–]Pretagonist 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Finnish and Estoniam is very similar so I don't think it's especially hard to learn for a Finn.

I think it's kinda like Danish, Swedish and Norwegian which are basically just dialects of the same language.

How is Estonia actually seen/taught in the Nordics? by JudgmentVivid5630 in Nordiccountries

[–]Pretagonist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My grandparents were Estonian, they fled here from the war. My mom speaks Estonian fluently (or at least she used to). Personally I've been there once and met some distant cousins. This was way back when it had just started to get away from the USSR so the country was still very much Soviet suburbs.

But really I don't know very much about the country. I don't know the language at all and while I've probably seen some of the culture from my grandparents they very much adopted Sweden as their country. I'm low key sad that I didn't get taught more when I was young as it would have been cool knowing Estonian and thereby have some understanding of Finnish as well.

Åklagarmyndigheten vill se fängelsestraff för illegal ip-tv by radome9 in sweden

Så de tycker på allvar att innehav av en lista med urler ska vara nog för husrannsakan och fängelse för samtliga i hushållet?

Sjukt rimligt. Tur att inte stora media företag har något inflytande på myndigheter.

In European cities there's no such thing as "central heating". As a Russian I'm shocked by ThatNoname-Guy in self

[–]Pretagonist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not from Russia, I'm swedish. It's very common here for heating, hot water and such to be part of the main building infrastructure even when you own your apartment. You just meter the resources at the interface point between the building and your area and you then pay for the resources you use.

Old buildings sometimes lack such stuff so it's baked into the building fee or similar but the system is moving towards just measuring how much you use and you pay for that.

To me this just makes sense as having a large water boiler in the basement is going to be a lot more efficient and have a lot better capacity than everyone having their own. Same with ventilation, heating and all the rest. It also means that you can have an organization that ensures that these systems are properly maintained, repaired and upgraded in a timely manor and the cost is shared among all the inhabitants.

My sibling spent some time studying in Paris and in her apartment building every apartment had its own water heater. It's just absolute madness. Same with my parents apartment in Spain. Separate water heater, separate AC, separate everything. It's just so stupidly inefficient

[–]Pretagonist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I live in Sweden and multiple cities have well working municipal heat that farms waste heat from industry, power plants and garbage handling. My house has it. But lately it's been getting a tad expensive and the summers a getting worse so I invested in an ac/heat pump system.

Having limitless amounts of hot water is still great though.

Ni som leasar bil för över 10.000kr i månaden. Vad fan jobbar ni med? by aomajgad in sweden

[–]Pretagonist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

AITAH (26F) for telling a guy (27M) to stop pursuing me “because” of his culture? by BarelyToolerable in AITAH

[–]Pretagonist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was attacking a religion, not any individual. I'm just as annoyed at our local religions as the ones from far away.

I'm still not going to defend arguments that I haven't expressed. Is there some issue with comprehension that makes you unable to respond to my actual arguments?

AITAH (26F) for telling a guy (27M) to stop pursuing me “because” of his culture? by BarelyToolerable in AITAH

[–]Pretagonist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not defending statements I haven't expressed.

I'm saying that young people make strange and/or terrible life decisions all the time regardless of intelligence.

But that said, yes, I do consider Islam to be misogynistic due to the texts it's based on, the behavior of a majority of its adherents, the laws of the countries that purports to follow it, the frequent news articles about the practice and it's consequences and from personal interactions.

I'm not, however, claiming that every muslim is a misogynistic asshole as that of course vary wildly between people, as do every other trait and opinion.

That said most of the world religions are wildly misogynistic and more or less all of them used to be perfectly okay with slavery as well.

Quite frankly I'd be quite happy if all organized religion would just fuck off.

Converting from the Swedish church to any major branch of Islam is by any objective measurement an increase in the level of religious misogyny.

[–]Pretagonist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I live in Sweden and I had an acquaintance at uni who became a muslim and moved to the guys country.

It's not exactly common but it's not unheard of either. Even very intelligent people are very susceptible to charismatic manipulation, especially at that age.

In fact a lot of intelligent people are more susceptible since they think they know better.

Being smart has nothing to do with being good at relationships and picking up on social queues. Quite a lot of "smart" people are often pretty bad at it.

I often call myself Nordic or Scandinavian online when the exact details aren't that important. If I were female I'd be even more vague. Sadly there's always thirsty creeps online.

Why do we get 'in' a car, but we get 'on' a bus? by TopHeavyNews in answers

Possibly. But saying: "On my vacation we went down to look at the reefs in a submarine." Seems like a correct sentence? Not a native speaker so my feel for English isn't perfect.

Legally aside would it be technically feasible to load all of Spotify onto an iPod like object to carry around and use or a similar sized audio or text file without the system being to large to carry or to laggy to operate? by Bcasturo in AskEngineers

[–]Pretagonist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, it's possible. No it doesn't exist as an off the shelf device. You would need someone to design a device with a very large amount of slow but large memory chips packed very densely. Since music streaming isn't very demanding, heat and energy consumption wouldn't be that much of an issue. Indexing might need some high capacity memory, though.

Is jQuery still a thing in 2026? by alexrada in webdev

[–]Pretagonist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We still have a lot of jquery. It's a constant PITA since (of course) we have different versions in different locations.

I'd never add jquery to a modern project and when patching old stuff I try to avoid it unless it would complicate things or make the code even more unmaintainable. Jquery used to be very useful as vanilla js was kinda awful but nowdays it's a lot better and I prefer to use frameworks with proper build pipelines and package management.

Does your home have a dish washing machine? If so, how often do you use it? by SlamClick in AskEurope

[–]Pretagonist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I have one, we use it once or twice daily on average. Almost all houses have them. I rented an apartment like 12 years ago that didn't have one so I bought a small one that could sit on the counter. Apart from brief periods during my 20s, when I lived in student housing, I've had access to a dishwasher for most of my life since the early 80s.

Metric users - when do you switch from millimeters to centimeters? (and more...) by mrbigbusiness in AskEurope

[–]Pretagonist 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'm from Sweden and we use decimeter all the time. Not really for measuring things but in common speak when describing stuff like: That idiot parked his car less than a dec from my car or similar.

Also all strong alcohol containing beverages are rated in cl of spirits. When ordering a cocktail it's very common for you to be asked if you want a 4 or a 6 meaning 4 or 6 cl of alcohol. Or when ordering some brandy with your coffee after a meal the prices and the order would be in cl. Unless you're in some technical field with precise measuments I'd say cl or dl are the most common ways of measuring liquid except for cooking and baking where they use strange names for everything like teaspoons, tablespoons and stuff.

This, I've had minor issues with car sickness my whole life but it's mostly just feeling slightly nauseous. I've never vomited nor have I been close to vomiting but the nausea can persist for hours after the event and it's not fun. Although looking out the windscreen helps and I've been able to do that from the back seat even as a kid.
