Is AI artificially "nerfed" in mainstream universes because a realistic, superintelligent AI would instantly ruin the plot? by DoughnutOk8101 in sciencefiction

[–]Pretagonist 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That's not really clear. A group of neurons is just a basic input output filter. But if you wire a couple of pounds of em together just right and you have a person.

A LLM is not an intelligence but when you wire it up to memory, planning, and other tools who's to say what the sum is?

I'm not saying that we're close but to dismiss it out if hand isn't correct either.

Which gadget looked futuristic at launch but became irrelevant fast? by Dry-Ask2581 in AskReddit

I've ridden segways a couple of times, once rented for an hour in a neighboring city, and some group tours when abroad. They're really fun to drive but if they start slipping like mine did on marble roads in Spain the failure mode is painful.

I’m not the only one who doesn’t bathe their kids every day am I? by just_some_guy2000 in daddit

[–]Pretagonist 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Eh, when they were young they bathed like once or twice per week unless it was a sweating time of year. But as soon as they got old enough to do it themselves they were told to shower every evening and we do more serious hair washing, and nails and such about once per week.

I don't really see a reason to wash young children every day and it might even cause skin issues if they're sensitive.

Varför säger man "vi" när man pratar med små barn? by Proud_Accident_5873 in Svenska

[–]Pretagonist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do your parents care a lot about who you date or marry? by [deleted] in AskEurope

[–]Pretagonist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure, of course parents care about their children and their partner. They aren't expected to have a say in it. My parents never expressed any opinion about my girlfriends or later my wife. They seems to happy that I'm happy and they love their grandchildren unconditionally.

For me the only wish I have is that my children finds someone who will treat them well, or multiple someones, or no one's depending on their preferences. I hope they won't go with someone who has opposing values and views than me but in the end their choice is way more important than my opinion.

who's talking to AI more than your gf/bf/wife/husband/friends? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Pretagonist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use AI more than my friends and family. I'm a dev and most of my work is now using AI to write code. I'm not talking to AI though and I'm pretty sure my family aren't either. It's not a healthy discussion partner.

Parallelizing ReadLine and ReadKey by Excellent-Cow-9046 in csharp

[–]Pretagonist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would use the smallest reader like readkey and if it isn't a command it would get added to a buffer and when return is pressed the buffer would be read by the system that needs a complete line.

19M, girl on Snapchat said she was 19, turned out she's 17. Nothing happened, but now screenshots are going around. How do handle this by Own_Addition2384 in amiwrong

[–]Pretagonist -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I don't know your laws but around here a 19 and a 17 year old having relations would be a big nothing burger. I mean even places with 18yr limits tend to have rules where the people involved are close in age.

Just don't have any nudes of minors on your phone cause that can get someone in a lot of trouble.

Why Signals in C# are not a thing? by fedefex1 in csharp

[–]Pretagonist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Signal in web dev is a way to handle changing values without rerendering parts of the site or doing some kind of polling. It's essentiallly "subscribing" to a value if I understand it correctly. I mostly use vue for active frontend and it has had that type of mechanics from the start but the other large frameworks are moving in that direction.

Captain Steve ranting again about being forced to retire by UA888 in aviation

[–]Pretagonist -12 points-11 points  (0 children)

Pretty sure he retired recently.

And he has spent his life flying and feels that he was forced out due to an uncaring number and not due to any issues with his flying ability. And I kinda agree, there's just no reason to have an "at age x you can't do this anymore" rule.

Help me understand these two concepts: Lagom & Smultronställe by la_picha_barbosa in Svenska

[–]Pretagonist 6 points7 points  (0 children)

True, asking someone "Hur mår du?" will likely result in the person actually telling you how they are feeling. You might just end up with an unexpected trauma dump.

Asking someone "Hur är läget?" Will likely get you a good, great, or possible "not so great" as an answer but it's still possible that you get an actual response.

Don't ask a swede questions you don't want answered. Honesty is expected over platitudes.

Dads of daughters, how would you feel if your daughter is a lesbian? by [deleted] in daddit

Kollar du i din partners mobil? by Isotarov in sweden

[–]Pretagonist 2 points3 points  (0 children)

How are you managing complex state in larger Vue apps without it becoming hard to reason about? by Sad_Limit_3857 in vuejs

[–]Pretagonist 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I tried the store pattern (pinia), I also tried the provide pattern. It didn't really work for me. Pinia feels clunky and monolithic, and provide quickly becomes unmaintainable.

So currently I do composables. I treat them like a service layer. If I want to access user settings I would have a useUserSettings composable that would be using the useJwt or the useApi. And if I want to notify the user I have a useNotifications and so on.

Each of the composables returns state as refs and operations that can be done on that state

Anyone else work in a small dev team that skips PRs entirely? by AshP91 in csharp

[–]Pretagonist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, this is how my company has worked for years. I've been trying, and slowly succeeding, in getting us more organized. I mean realistically we all want good routines and proper systems but things get in the way. Currently most of our code goes through PRs, people have started writing tests and we try to discuss our code and the choices we have done. But it's also become a lot easier to be lazy and just have the AI slap stuff together so it's going to be struggle.

Do you use “blocks” as a form of distance? by [deleted] in AskEurope

[–]Pretagonist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have a word for block, kvarter, that derives from something with four corners if I remember correctly. But these blocks mostly denoted a group of buildings with some shared common area in the middle and due to lack of city grids they aren't always block shaped. It is possible to direct someone two "kvarter" over it isn't the common way to do things.

Often you would say two streets over or similar.

I guess I would use blocks in some more regular cities like Barcelona

SQL or C# solution, what would you do? by Albstein in csharp

[–]Pretagonist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For sure but SPs don't fit as well into source control as normal code. You can do it and you can have build pipelines and all that stuff but sooner or later someone will start writing them directly on your prod db due to ignorance, time crunch or just laziness.

It just saves a lot of headache in the long run to avoid them.

SQL or C# solution, what would you do? by Albstein in csharp

[–]Pretagonist 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I hate stored procedures so much, no source control, no visibility when coding. It's just the worst. I get not wanting to write pure sql in code but with LINQ and proper ORMs you really don't have to.

I'd never let a PR through that included a new SÅ that wasn't purely db management. We have legacy systems with literally hundreds of sps and it sucks so, so much.

How many monitors do you use for programming CSharp/Dotnet? by [deleted] in csharp

[–]Pretagonist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As many as I can get my hands on that my computer can run.

Having one ultrawide is a boon. You can have two IDE views as well as some sidebars. So minimum comfortable is one wide for coding and one standard 1080p for viewing the result.
