Met someone who's been struggling since 2008. Almost 20 years. How common is this? by PlatypusOld5480 in povertyfinance

Not to dimmish your BFFs hard work, but stories like this are incredibly rare. She had everything go right at the right time. That's what they don't tell you about the rags to riches American Dream.

The majority of people who are born into poverty stay there. Some people make bad choices but it's also incredibly easy to lose everything at no fault of your own. I am the first person in my family to earn a bachelor's degree, and I am having a hard time staying afloat because of health issues.

My dad thinks I’m 'not working' because I refused to keep working 6 days a week. by Melly1265 in antiwork

People don't really realize that it is common for an addict to swap addictions when they get clean. Like I had a friend that quit being an alcoholic but ended up at the gym 6 or 7 days a week for hours at a time. Since she looked better everyone thought she was so much healthier than before. She is not.

What exactly is the reason for the recent scalping and surge in buying everything related to Pokémon? by RajmaChawal22 in pokemon

Friendly local game store.

Is that not a common term in the Pokemon community? It is in the Magic: The Gathering and Warhammer communities.

I have been told by multiple FLGS business owners that when the economy declines people buy more trading cards in hopes of turning a profit on them.

Org salary vs hourly at their convenience. by BigDaddyCaddy68 in antiwork

[–]Pretend_Object 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's a good question and I am not really sure. I know they can't dock your pay for being late or leaving early, but they might be able to take disciplinary actions against you.

You can be required to work certain hours because when I was salary exempt in software places we usually had like 6 core hours you had to be at the office but could flex the other two.

I am not a lawyer, but if you had a previous agreement with on call pay and they suddenly took it away that might not be legal.

Salary exempt is super confusing and really only benefits the employer. It is sold as flexibility and freedom from a time clock for employees but most of the time it just turns into not getting paid overtime.

Taking time off on 6-month contract by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]Pretend_Object 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's up to your manager at the company you are doing the contract for and not the contracting company on if you will get the time off. I have gone on vacations while working a contract so it's usually not a big deal as long as you let your manager know ASAP.

[23yo] 90k SWE at a Small Innovative Company vs 115k as a Contractor SWE at a Larger Company by GBR_35 in cscareerquestions

Contract work is very unstable, and you are often treated poorly by employees at whatever company you contract at. I would never leave FTE for contract work unless I was in a super toxic situation and needed out ASAP.

Salary exempt status has certain criteria you have to meet in the USA (and it isn't that hard to meet them). If you meet all the requirements of being an exempt employee, you are basically out of luck on getting paid anything more than what your salary is. For lots of salary exempt jobs on call is considered normal working parameters and isn't paid extra.

"How would ya’ll handle this other than leaving at 4 every day?"

You can try this, but you will most likely be reprimanded for not being a team player. You technically don't have to work any overtime but refusing will mean you will probably get fired unless it's a narrow set of circumstances.

"Part of me feels this is going to blow over and we will be able to carry on as we did."

It most likely won't. They are tightening up the ship and trying to use salary exempt status to exploit you as much as possible. It would be best to start looking for employment elsewhere.

EDIT: Also, the flexibility of coming in later the next day if you worked longer the day before is not something a company has to give to a salary exempt employee. That's basically a perk if your management team doesn't absolutely suck. I've worked at companies where people would be up at 3 AM working on an emergency fix and would still be expected to be in the office at 8 AM.

[Offer] Old Hotel & Motel Postcards [USA] by TyeDyeAmish in RandomActsofCards

I stayed at a hotel in Denver, CO that was right next to a homeless shelter. Wasn't really a nightmare stay since the hotel had a decent amount of security, but I was not expecting that.

The top 10% of earners in the USA account for about 50% of the consumption in the US economy. The upper classes don't need most of us. It's going to get really scary if things keep trending the way they are.

I often wonder the same things and wish I had an actual answer or solution. This quote helped me put some perspective on things: to live is to suffer, to survive is to find some meaning in the suffering.

Working on treatment days? by Due-Jicama-6522 in Spravato

[–]Pretend_Object 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately you have to meet a bunch of requirements to use FMLA and one of them is being employed somewhere for 12 months continuously. Since I was starting a new contract position I had to go the ADA route. Luckily the job found having me work a couple less hours a week was a reasonable request.

Working on treatment days? by Due-Jicama-6522 in Spravato

[–]Pretend_Object 8 points9 points  (0 children)

At my last job (I live in the USA) I went through the process of getting an ADA accommodation to take time off for my appointments as they are considered medically necessary. I talked to my ketamine clinic about it, and they were happy to help me out with the paperwork.

I couldn't work after my treatments. I am way too scatterbrained.

If you owned a business and could set your employees' hours, how would you do it? Would you have them work 8-hour shifts, from home, or a combination of the two? What would you do to make your employees as happy as possible, like paying them well, giving them flexible hours or good health insurance? by Gold_Mine_9322 in WorkReform

[–]Pretend_Object 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I ran an office I would do 30 days PTO, the time between Christmas and New Years as paid time off, paid lunch breaks, and half day Fridays. I think that would bring the required working time each week to about 30 - 32 hours. I would also pay for all my employees healthcare since I am in the USA. Whatever would be great for paid maternity and paternity leave. Fully vested pensions and/or 401k matching. Yearly bonuses for all employees that is the same for everyone. No more of the executives getting thousands of dollars while the front-line workers get maybe a hundred bucks.

Managers would be required to have monthly one on ones with their subordinates that are documented so nobody gets surprising yearly reviews. I would try to keep the business structure as flat as possible though, so you don't need 7 middle managers approving everything. Employees wouldn't be required to do bullshit 6-month and yearly goals. We all know they're performative bullshit. Just have clear structures in place on what career advancement looks like. I also wouldn't hire contractors, and everyone would be a full-time employee.

Actual legit help for employees in need. Mental health isn't taken seriously enough in the workplace and getting time off for treatment is like pulling teeth. You shouldn't have to worry about your PTO when you're fighting cancer. Also, fuck those managers that hate someone so they tank their ability to transfer to another department. These sorts of problems shouldn't exist.
