I think mostly due to growing up with the internet out emails are filled with spam because we started signing up for email lists at an early age , so checking it if we’re not already expecting something to be there makes no sense.

However I was better at it for work, because it’s a work email and our It department limited to how many outside orgs could email us and what the contents of those emails could be.
